I have become almost completely convinced there will be commerce during Jesus’ 1000-year reign on earth, and in the new heaven and the new earth to come. But commerce then will run under different rules than many businesses use today. Early in my Christian walk this verse “spanked” me.
Woe to those who add house to house and join field to field,
Until there is no more room,
So that you have to live alone in the midst of the land!
Isaiah 5:8 NASB
I had been thinking about being so successful in business that it would put many other businesses out of business. The Word of God let me know my motivation was wrong. Oh, I know God has nothing against His children having plenty.
Let them shout for joy and rejoice, who favor my vindication;
And let them say continually,
“The LORD be magnified,
Who delights in the prosperity of His servant.“
Psalm 35:27 NASB
Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.
3 John 2 NKJV
And my God will supply all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:19 BSB
But there is a right way to go about it.
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.”
Matthew 6:33 BSB
It is the blessing of the LORD that makes rich,
And He adds no sorrow to it.
Proverbs 10:22 NASB
The key is to DO as you would have DONE to you.
“Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”
Matthew 7:12 NKJV
Paul repeats the lesson.
The entire law is fulfilled in a single decree: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
Galatians 5:14 BSB
Rest assured, though, the wicked don’t get it.
Evil men do not understand justice,
But those who seek the LORD understand all things.
Proverbs 28:5 NASB
They think there are no eternal consequences to bad behavior.
10 My son, if sinners entice you,
Do not consent.
11 If they say, “Come with us,
Let us lie in wait to shed blood;
Let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause;
12 Let us swallow them alive like Sheol,
And whole, like those who go down to the Pit;
13 We shall find all kinds of precious possessions,
We shall fill our houses with spoil;
14 Cast in your lot among us,
Let us all have one purse”—
15 My son, do not walk in the way with them,
Keep your foot from their path;
16 For their feet run to evil,
And they make haste to shed blood.
Proverbs 1:10-16 NKJV
13 A foolish woman is clamorous;
She is simple, and knows nothing.
14 For she sits at the door of her house,
On a seat by the highest places of the city,
15 To call to those who pass by,
Who go straight on their way:
16 “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here”;
And as for him who lacks understanding, she says to him,
17 “Stolen water is sweet,
And bread eaten in secret is pleasant.”
18 But he does not know that the dead are there,
That her guests are in the depths of hell.
Proverbs 9:13-18 NKJV
I have been treated badly by several businesses. There is absolutely no way the executives of those companies would be happy if they were treated the way they treated me and their other customers. I decided not to go into detail in part because I don’t want to meditate on the details. I will say that I apologized to two customer service representatives for being short and testy with them. It’s not their fault their management has decided to treat their customers contrary to how they themselves would like to be treated.
But the era of the Golden Rule being, “He who has the gold makes the rules” is coming to an end. I so agree with Peter!
But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.
2 Peter 3:13 NASB
Jesus is coming soon. Be ready!
32 “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors! 34 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”
Matthew 24:32-35 NKJV
34 “But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. 35 For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”
Luke 21:34-36 NKJV
