Overcoming Fear

I don’t know how many times I have read this, but I finally “got it.”

When I am afraid,
I will trust in You.
In God, whose word I praise—
in God I trust.
I will not be afraid.
What can man do to me?
Psalms 56:3-4 BSB

David starts the paragraph acknowledging that he is afraid, but just a few words later he says he will not be afraid. What changed to get rid of the fear? David recalled and praised God’s Word!

When I am afraid,
I will trust in You.
In God, whose word I praise
in God I trust.
I will not be afraid.
What can man do to me?
Psalms 56:3-4 BSB

Perhaps David recalled this.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
Psalms 23:4 NKJV

I’m sure he also knew the truth of these future words of Jesus.

“Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”
Matthew 10:28 NASB

Paul wrote these.

And do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of the mind, for you to prove what is the good and well-pleasing and perfect will of God.
Romans 12:2 BLB

We tear down arguments, and every presumption set up against the knowledge of God; and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
2 Corinthians 10:5 BSB

David overcame fear by recalling, believing, and praising God’s Word. We should follow his example.

I will bless the Lord at all times;
His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul shall make its boast in the Lord;
The humble shall hear of it and be glad.
Oh, magnify the Lord with me,
And let us exalt His name together.

I sought the Lord, and He heard me,
And delivered me from all my fears.
They looked to Him and were radiant,
And their faces were not ashamed.
This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him,
And saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him,
And delivers them.
Psalms 34:1-7 NKJV

Of late I have been noticing God’s promises to take care of His people in times of famine. Are hard times coming? I don’t know. But I’m storing up God’s promises anyway.

The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry,
but He denies the craving of the wicked.
Proverbs 10:3 BSB

Jesus is coming soon. Be ready!

32 “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors! 34 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”
Matthew 24:32-35 NKJV

34 But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. 35 For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.
Luke 21:34-36 NKJV
