Proverbs Reading Plan

When Jesus was temped by the devil, He quoted Deuteronomy 8:3, that man needs more than food for the physical body.

But He answered and said, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
Matthew 4:4 NKJV

Jesus Himself is the bread of life.

And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.
John 6:35 NKJV

Jesus is also the Word of God.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
John 1:1-4 NKJV

11 Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. 12 His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. 13 He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.
Revelation 19:11-13 NKJV

Part of the prayer Jesus taught us to pray, commonly called The Lord’s Prayer, includes praying for our daily bread.

Give us this day our daily bread.
Matthew 6:11 NKJV

Until recently I had only seen “Give us this day our daily bread” in terms of food for the physical body. I now realize that I am also praying for the Words from His mouth that I need for that day. I need both physical food and spiritual food. And I need them every day.

Proverbs also speaks of seeking the Lord daily.

32 “Now therefore, listen to me, my children,
For blessed are those who keep my ways.
33 Hear instruction and be wise,
And do not disdain it.
34 Blessed is the man who listens to me,
Watching daily at my gates,
Waiting at the posts of my doors.
35 For whoever finds me finds life,
And obtains favor from the Lord;
36 But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul;
All those who hate me love death.”
Proverbs 8:32-36 NKJV

A simple and effective plan for hearing His Words every day is to – every day – read the chapter of Proverbs that matches the day of the month. Proverbs has 31 chapters, so if it is the 3rd of the month, read the 3rd chapter of Proverbs. If is is the 23rd of the month, read Proverbs 23. If you miss a day or two (or ten), forgive yourself and read the chapter of Proverbs for that day. Forget past failures and drive on!

22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
    his mercies never come to an end;
23 they are new every morning;
    great is your faithfulness.
Lamentations 3:22-23 ESV

12 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 3:12-14 NKJV

Proverbs itself says to keep coming back, whether you’re simple or young or wise or have understanding. There is always more!

To know wisdom and instruction,
To perceive the words of understanding,
To receive the instruction of wisdom,
Justice, judgment, and equity;
To give prudence to the simple,
To the young man knowledge and discretion—
A wise man will hear and increase learning,
And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel,
To understand a proverb and an enigma,
The words of the wise and their riddles.
Proverbs 1:2-6 NKJV

What about months that don’t have 31 days?

Some people read all the remaining chapters of Proverbs on the last day of the month. For example they read Proverbs 30 and 31 on September 30, and Proverbs 28-31 on February 28 of most years. I don’t. I just read the Proverb of the day. I’m divorced, and the description of The Virtuous Wife of Proverbs 31 always leaves me a little sad. I always wonder for a while after reading it if there weren’t things I could have done differently to have kept my marriage from failing. Reading this passage (about) every other month is enough for me.

Jesus is coming soon. Be ready!

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.
1 Thessalonians 5:4-6 NKJV

32 “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors! 34 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”
Matthew 24:32-35 NKJV

34 But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. 35 For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.
Luke 21:34-36 NKJV

Are you following God's plan for your life?
You should.
Your plan sucks.
It really, really sucks.
Suckage Maximus.

Most people are WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!

Jesus is coming.
Are you ready to meet Him?
Give your life to Jesus Christ.
Time is running out.
