How To Witness

I am writing this primarily for my own benefit. Feel free to listen in. Though I’ve been a Christian for 38 years I often feel I don’t ‘know enough’ to tell anyone how to become a follower of Jesus Christ. This is ridiculous. Lord, please, more boldness!

I have a tiny but important role in the salvation process. My job is to toss out the seed, the Word. The Holy Spirit then takes that seed and helps the hearer to understand. God Himself is the only one who can draw the person to Himself. He is the only who can quiet all the noise of hell so the person can choose to be free of the chains they have just discovered encircle them. I toss the baseball in the air. The Holy Spirit knocks it out of the park.

To a large degree I don’t think it matters much what I say, so long as it is Truth. A very important seed that led to my salvation was a very short speech a gentleman made to me. Though the more than 38 years have dimmed whether it was one or two sentences, what he said was very close to this: “I like being a Christian. It works for me.” The “It works for me” tumbled over and over and over and over in my mind until it became
     !!!IT!!!  !!!*W*O*R*K*S*!!!  FOR  !!!!!**MEEEEEEEE**!!!!!
When I prayed the sinner’s prayer with a pastor, like eggs in a microwave this seed and many others exploded into LIFE!

I just need to share some Truth. I’m not responsible for the results.

Let me give an example. Shortly after I got saved I was eating lunch in a college cafeteria with some friends. I shared some of what had been going on in my life. From a purely theological view, my testimony was a D-. I didn’t talk much about God because I didn’t know Him very well yet. A spiritual infant, my diapers were often wet and stinky. I talked mostly about how bad the devil had been. I continued to “witness” this way for a year, until two of us toddlers – in a conversation at the same time – realized God gets little glory from vivid descriptions of our hard-heartedness and stupidity, of how close we had to get to the fires of hell before we perceived them. It’s one thing to mention heavy drug use when witnessing. It’s quite another to spend 20 minutes on details of partying and only one minute on what God did to save one from hell.

I was surprised when one of the “victims” of my “witnessing” came up a few days later and told me that what I had said was partially responsible for his going forward at a revival meeting and giving his life to Jesus Christ. At that cafeteria table, what he was hearing had very little to do with what I was saying. I talked mostly about the devil. But I had tossed enough about God into the air that the Holy Spirit kept putting questions in his heart. “Are you ready to die?” “What if this had happened to you and you died. Where would you be right now?” “Call upon the Lord while he can be found. Soon your calls will be too late.” These burst into life a few days later when he prayed the sinner’s prayer.

I just need to share some Truth. I’m not responsible for the results.

Are you following God's plan for your life?
   You should.
      Your plan sucks.
      It really, really sucks.

Jesus is coming.
Are you ready to meet Him?

Praying For Revival

We may be praying for, um, unpleasantness. There are people I care and pray about who seem determined to keep their eyes fixed on their electronic distraction devices, taking their behavior and morality cues from the vast herd of lemmings I believe are laughing their way down the broad and easy path of eternal destruction. I want these loved ones to pause, put down their smart phones, and think deeply of their eternal destination. I want them to choose eternal life. But I think it may take events that are, shall we say, substantially different from “normal, everyday life” to get them to pause and reflect.

I witnessed the drowning death of a high school classmate. I could stand my own thoughts for only about a week thereafter. I basically just grabbed a pastor. We prayed, and ever since I have possessed a peace and a joy that stubbornly persist no matter what slice of hell I may be going through. I belong to God, and there is no evil power strong enough to change that.

Jesus is coming soon!

As for me and the possible coming calamities, I am determined to be untroubled. They are merely an opportunity for God to prove that I am worth more than many sparrows! Should I be called upon to be a contestant in a round of You Bet Your Life – Eternal Edition, I pray that my meditations on my soon fittings for my robe of righteousness and crown of life will be sufficient to see me faithful to the end. Which is really, just the beginning!

How To Use More Of Your Brain

Write it down.

Take a walk.

Rewrite it. Say more using fewer words. Make the words apply just to you. Or demand they fit a great many people. Or do what I most often do. Distill the content to a single sentence to use in meditation and prayer.

Take a walk.

Repeat over time. Minutes, hours, years. Repeat until you get an “Ah ha!” on the inside, or you are sure no “Ah ha!” exists.

Using a computer often works for writing and rewriting. However, sometimes I feel that the dimly-perceived hidden nugget will resist the mere tap-tap-tap of keyboards. Mining such gems seems to require the slower, and (I believe) more brain-intensive process of paper and pen. It may take me 4 or 5 tries with ink and paper, but the “taller content, fewer words” procedure has always brought the barely-felt truth to light. Try it!

As you can see, I like writing utensils of many colors and textures.
