2018 – Unfulfilled Old Testament Prophecy

In my Bible study this year, one thing stands out here at the end of the year: Many things prophesied to happen in the Old Testament have not happened yet! The Old Testament is not a “closed book” except for the prayers and songs of Psalms and wisdom of Proverbs. The Old Testament is full of things that, on God’s timetable, must happen soon. Let’s start with the full prophecy Jesus talked about in Luke 4.

16 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.
Luke 4:16-21 NKJV

Here is the full paragraph of prophecy from Isaiah 61. I highlighted the part not yet fulfilled. Notice it starts with the day of vengeance of our God, which has not happened yet.

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me,
Because the Lord has anointed Me
To preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives,
And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord,
And the day of vengeance of our God;
To comfort all who mourn,
To console those who mourn in Zion,
To give them beauty for ashes,
The oil of joy for mourning,
The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;
That they may be called trees of righteousness,
The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.
Isaiah 61:1-3 NKJV

Ezekiel 36 speaks of the restoration of all of Israel. It contains this well-loved passage.

26 “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. 28 Then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; you shall be My people, and I will be your God.”
Ezekiel 36:26-28 NKJV

Ezekiel 48 divides the land among the 12 tribes, so the “missing” tribes will be identified! Here is just a part of the chapter.

“Now these are the names of the tribes: From the northern border along the road to Hethlon at the entrance of Hamath, to Hazar Enan, the border of Damascus northward, in the direction of Hamath, there shall be one section for Dan from its east to its west side; by the border of Dan, from the east side to the west, one section for Asher; by the border of Asher, from the east side to the west, one section for Naphtali; by the border of Naphtali, from the east side to the west, one section for Manasseh; by the border of Manasseh, from the east side to the west, one section for Ephraim; by the border of Ephraim, from the east side to the west, one section for Reuben; by the border of Reuben, from the east side to the west, one section for Judah; by the border of Judah, from the east side to the west, shall be the district which you shall set apart, twenty-five thousand cubits in width, and in length the same as one of the other portions, from the east side to the west, with the sanctuary in the center.”
Ezekiel 48:1-8 NKJV

This hasn’t happened yet.

For behold, the Lord will come with fire
And with His chariots, like a whirlwind,
To render His anger with fury,
And His rebuke with flames of fire.
16 For by fire and by His sword
The Lord will judge all flesh;
And the slain of the Lord shall be many.
Isaiah 66:15-16 NKJV

Zechariah 14 is yet future too.

And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives,
Which faces Jerusalem on the east.
And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two,
From east to west,
Making a very large valley;
Half of the mountain shall move toward the north
And half of it toward the south.

And this shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the people who fought against Jerusalem:

Their flesh shall dissolve while they stand on their feet,
Their eyes shall dissolve in their sockets,
And their tongues shall dissolve in their mouths.

Zechariah 14:4, 12 NKJV

Yesterday I wrote about the new heavens and new earth of Isaiah 65: Twice? New Heaven and New Earth?

This only scratches the surface of unfulfilled Old Testament prophecies. If you’re not regularly reading from the whole Bible, I suggest you start.

The Fear of the Lord is Forever!

I have read this passage of a scene in heaven many times, and it recently “leapt into my heart” is a new and vital way.

Then a voice came from the throne, saying:

“Praise our God,
    all you his servants,
you who fear him,
    both great and small!”
Revelation 19:5 NIV

The reverential fear of the Lord lasts forever!

Twice? New Heaven and New Earth?

Per my understanding of the book of Revelation, these events happen in this order:

I want to point out two things in The Great White Throne Judgment passages. First, earth and heaven cease to exist. If God can’t find a place for them, they are gone. Second, Death itself is cast into the lake of fire. Death is therefore no more.

11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
Revelation 20:4-6 NKJV

Notice that there is no death in the new heaven and new earth!

Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”

Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.”
Revelation 21:1-5 NKJV

I have been meditating on this passage from Isaiah 65, trying to fit it into the Revelation chronology. The beginning and ending of the passage are well known. But notice there is still death!

17 “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth;
And the former shall not be remembered or come to mind.
18 But be glad and rejoice forever in what I create;
For behold, I create Jerusalem as a rejoicing,
And her people a joy.
19 I will rejoice in Jerusalem,
And joy in My people;
The voice of weeping shall no longer be heard in her,
Nor the voice of crying.

20 “No more shall an infant from there live but a few days,
Nor an old man who has not fulfilled his days;
For the child shall die one hundred years old,
But the sinner being one hundred years old shall be accursed.
21 They shall build houses and inhabit them;
They shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
22 They shall not build and another inhabit;
They shall not plant and another eat;
For as the days of a tree, so shall be the days of My people,
And My elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands.
23 They shall not labor in vain,
Nor bring forth children for trouble;
For they shall be the descendants of the blessed of the Lord,
And their offspring with them.

24 “It shall come to pass
That before they call, I will answer;
And while they are still speaking, I will hear.
25 The wolf and the lamb shall feed together,
The lion shall eat straw like the ox,
And dust shall be the serpent’s food.
They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain,”
Says the Lord.
Isaiah 65:17-25 NKJV

This Isaiah 65 passage, which contains death (and sinners), does not fit with with the perfection of the new heaven and new earth of Revelation 21. Therefore I tentatively conclude God creates a new heaven and new earth at the beginning of Christ’s 1,000-year reign. It may be an “in-place” creation, that is, the current heaven and earth may be “healed” and “re-created.” Certainly the earth will be in sad condition at the end of the tribulation, with completely dead oceans and nothing but blood to drink.

Then the second angel poured out his bowl on the sea, and it became blood as of a dead man; and every living creature in the sea died.

Then the third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs of water, and they became blood. And I heard the angel of the waters saying:

“You are righteous, O Lord,
The One who is and who was and who is to be,
Because You have judged these things.
For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets,
And You have given them blood to drink.
For it is their just due.”
Revelation 16:3-6 NKJV

17 Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, “It is done!” 18 And there were noises and thunderings and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth. 19 Now the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. And great Babylon was remembered before God, to give her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath. 20 Then every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. 21 And great hail from heaven fell upon men, each hailstone about the weight of a talent. Men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, since that plague was exceedingly great.
Revelation 16:17-21 NKJV

The last chapter of Zechariah may be talking about an in-place recreation, starting from Jerusalem.

And in that day it shall be
That living waters shall flow from Jerusalem,
Half of them toward the eastern sea
And half of them toward the western sea;
In both summer and winter it shall occur.
And the Lord shall be King over all the earth.
In that day it shall be—
“The Lord is one,”
And His name one.
Zechariah 14:8-9 NKJV

Ezekiel talks about the water flowing east and its healing power.

Then he brought me back to the door of the temple; and there was water, flowing from under the threshold of the temple toward the east, for the front of the temple faced east; the water was flowing from under the right side of the temple, south of the altar. He brought me out by way of the north gate, and led me around on the outside to the outer gateway that faces east; and there was water, running out on the right side.

And when the man went out to the east with the line in his hand, he measured one thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the water came up to my ankles. Again he measured one thousand and brought me through the waters; the water came up to my knees. Again he measured one thousand and brought me through; the water came up to my waist. Again he measured one thousand, and it was a river that I could not cross; for the water was too deep, water in which one must swim, a river that could not be crossed. He said to me, “Son of man, have you seen this?” Then he brought me and returned me to the bank of the river.

When I returned, there, along the bank of the river, were very many trees on one side and the other. Then he said to me: “This water flows toward the eastern region, goes down into the valley, and enters the sea. When it reaches the sea, its waters are healed. And it shall be that every living thing that moves, wherever the rivers go, will live. There will be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters go there; for they will be healed, and everything will live wherever the river goes. 10 It shall be that fishermen will stand by it from En Gedi to En Eglaim; they will be places for spreading their nets. Their fish will be of the same kinds as the fish of the Great Sea, exceedingly many. 11 But its swamps and marshes will not be healed; they will be given over to salt. 12 Along the bank of the river, on this side and that, will grow all kinds of trees used for food; their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail. They will bear fruit every month, because their water flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for medicine.”
Ezekiel 47:1-12 NKJV

An in-place recreation of heaven and earth after the tribulation is how I currently reconcile Isaiah 65 and Revelation. Thoughts?

God Hates Pride

In the 1970’s there was a song popular around Christian bonfires whose lyrics contained this:

And we’ll guard each man’s dignity
And save each man’s pride.

I remember wondering about those lyrics, even in my B.C. state at the time. These many years later, I’m quite sure they’re not good Biblical teaching. Take the story of king Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 4. Because of the pride in the king’s heart, the Lord had him lose his mind and live like a beast for a time.

That very hour the word was fulfilled concerning Nebuchadnezzar; he was driven from men and ate grass like oxen; his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hair had grown like eagles’ feathers and his nails like birds’ claws.
Daniel 4:33 NKJV

Clearly, God didn’t care about Nebuchadnezzar’s dignity and pride! In fact, the Bible is quite clear that God hates pride.

The fear of the Lord is to hate evil;
Pride and arrogance and the evil way
And the perverse mouth I hate.
Proverbs 8:13 NKJV

Haughty eyes and a proud heart,
The lamp of the wicked, is sin.
Proverbs 21:4 NASB

A proud and haughty man—“Scoffer” is his name;
He acts with arrogant pride.
Proverbs 21:24 NKJV

A man’s pride will bring him low,
But the humble in spirit will retain honor.
Proverbs 29:23 NKJV

Instead of pride, choose humility.

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
James 4:10 KJV

Humility, the fear of the LORD, results in wealth, honor, and life.
Proverbs 22:4 CSB

Blessed are the meek,
For they shall inherit the earth.

Eat the Cherry; Spit Out the Pit

I spent quite a bit of time on a fascinating Bible-related web site. Visiting page after page, I found many things I had not thought about before. It was a delightful time.

Then I opened a page where the author “proved” there is no pre-tribulation rapture. Looking carefully, I noted the page had NONE of these Scriptures, which I believe indicate a pre-tribulation rapture.

Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.
Revelation 3:10 NKJV

Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”
Luke 21:36 NKJV

Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.
1 Thessalonians 4:17 ESV (Greek) (Strong’s G726)

And she gave birth to a son, a male child, who will rule all the nations with an iron scepter; and her child was caught up to God and to His throne.
Revelation 12:5 BSB (Greek) (Strong’s G726)

So what am I going to do? At this point, nothing. In the 1990’s my pastor would often say, “Eat the cherry, spit out the pit.” I rejoice in the new information I received at the site, “Eat the cherry,” and I’m going to ignore the information I think is in error, “Spit out the pit.”

Whether or not there is a pre-trib rapture is not a “salvation issue” IMO. Plus, I have been wrong many times in the past. So for now, this post is my only response to that web site, and you have probably noticed I provided no link to it.

I am looking forward to complete knowledge!

Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely.

Jesus the Date-Setter

Consider these words of Jesus.

32 “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors! 34 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.
Matthew 24:32-35 NKJV

28 “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender, and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 So you also, when you see these things happening, know that it is near—at the doors! 30 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.
Mark 13:28-31 NKJV

28 Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”
29 Then He spoke to them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 When they are already budding, you see and know for yourselves that summer is now near. 31 So you also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all things take place. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.
Luke 21:28-33 NKJV

I’m looking for things to change because Jesus said the generation that saw Israel become a nation would not pass away until all the things he talked about take place. (Look prior to the above passages to see the references to Israel.)

I’m watching and praying, so I’ll be accounted worthy to escape all that’s coming.

34 “But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. 35 For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.
Luke 21:34-36 NKJV

Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.
