From time to time I read my old blog posts. Sometimes I cringe – “This post is going to burn,” I think. But when I read some other I think, “Wow, that’s pretty good. Did I really write that?” 🙂 This post is based on one of those “Wow” posts from two years ago.
When Jesus was tempted by the devil, He didn’t argue. He just said, “It is written,” then quoted appropriate Scripture.
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. 3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”
4 But He answered and said, “It is written,‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”
5 Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written:
‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’
and,
‘Intheirhands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”
7 Jesus said to him, “It is written again,‘You shall nottempt the Lord your God.’”
8 Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”
10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written,‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’”

I received more understanding on this spiritual warfare passage.
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6 and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled. 2 Corinthians 10:3-6 NKJV
In the past I knew this applied to thoughts that would lead to obvious sin, like lust or gossip, but now I understand it applies to every thought contrary to the Bible’s promises.
If I begin to wonder if I’m on the right track I can choose instead to think, “I am one of His sheep and I hear His voice and follow Him,” “He who began a good work in me is still working, perfecting it until the day of Christ Jesus,” and, “He is causing everything to work together for my good.”
If I start to regret past bad decisions I can choose instead to think, “Forgetting the past I am pressing forward towards the goal to win the prize.”
For several days I have been more aware of the beginning of thoughts that lead away from God’s truth, and have been interrupting them with “It Is Written” thoughts based on Scripture. It is making a difference for good! I think that by doing this, I’m making better use of the helmet of salvation.

Matthew chapter 1 documents the virgin Mary conceiving Jesus by the Holy Spirit, and Joseph and Mary not having sexual relations before Jesus was born.
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. 20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”
24 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, 25 and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus. Matthew 1:18-25 NKJV
But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus. Matthew 1:25 NLT
but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he named Him Jesus. Matthew 1:25 NASB
but he kept her a virgin until she had given birth to a Son [her firstborn child]; and he named Him Jesus (The LORD is salvation). Matthew 1:25 AMP
There are specific references to Jesus’ family in the gospels.
31 Then His brothers and His mother came, and standing outside they sent to Him, calling Him. 32 And a multitude was sitting around Him; and they said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are outside seeking You.” Mark 3:31-32 NKJV
2 And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, “Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands! 3 Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” So they were offended at Him. Mark 6:2-3 NKJV
54 When He had come to His own country, He taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said, “Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works? 55 Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? 56 And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this Man get all these things?” Matthew 13:54-56 NKJV
Jesus’ family is also mentioned in the book of Acts.
12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey. 13 And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James. 14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. Acts 1:12-14 NKJV
So it is clear from Scripture that Joseph and Mary had other children after Jesus. Mary is not an eternal virgin.

I have been meditating on this a few minutes, and I love that Strong’s H7965 is duplicated – Perfect peace, perfect peace! A few English translations do this duplication.
Is there an issue with the original text, or did most of the English translators, I dunno, assumed God stuttered? Most translations are quite similar to the NKJV.
My original purpose for this post, before getting a little distracted by the largely-missing peace, peace, was to establish that peace comes through controlling the mind.
“You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.” Isaiah 26:3 NKJV
Trust God, not your own mind, your own understanding.

The easiest way I have found to do this is to try to imagine what eternity will be like.
If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. Want perfect peace? Set your mind on God and be dressed for success. The helmet protects the mind.

How much more evil does the world have to get before it is in the great tribulation of the book of Revelation? Not much, in my opinion. That’s one reason I’m expecting the rapture very soon, and therefore I think a lot about seeing Jesus soon. John writes that this expectation of seeing Jesus purifies.
Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. 2 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. 3 And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. 1 John 3:1-3 NKJV
I know God wants me to be wholly holy.
15 But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do,16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:15-16 BSB
Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord. Hebrews 12:14 NLT
Yet I often find myself falling way short of holiness and agree with Paul in Romans 7.
18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. 19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. 20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. Romans 7:18-20 NKJV
So I’m quick to repent.

I think about God’s character from Psalm 103.
3 If You, Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? 4 But there is forgiveness with You, That You may be feared. Psalm 130:3-4 NKJV
11 For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; 12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us. 13 As a father pities his children, So the Lord pities those who fear Him. 14 For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. I also think a lot about Jesus, what He has done, and what He will do.

When the disciples asked Jesus about end-times signs, the first He said was to be aware of being deceived.

Revelation talks about deception.
And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived. Revelation 13:14 NKJV
19 And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. 20 Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone. Revelation 19:19-20 NKJV
