I had been saved only about three years when this verse changed my thinking.
Woe to those who join house to house; They add field to field, Till there is no place Where they may dwell alone in the midst of the land! Isaiah 5:8 NKJV
I had been thinking about making money in a typical way, more or less at the expense of others. I was to learn God’s economy works differently: Be the kind of person that God can bless, and He will bless you.
The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, And He adds no sorrow with it. Proverbs 10:22 NKJV
“Butseek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Matthew 6:33 NKJV
The first half of Deuteronomy 15 gives more information about God’s ideal economy. First, debt among the children of Israel was to be forgiven every seven years, and this was part of the mechanism of God blessing them so they could lend to many nations but not have to borrow from them.
“At the end of every seven years you shall grant a release of debts.2 And this is the form of the release: Every creditor who has lent anything to his neighbor shall release it; he shall not require it of his neighbor or his brother, because it is called the Lord’s release. 3 Of a foreigner you may require it; but you shall give up your claim to what is owed by your brother, 4 except when there may be no poor among you; for the Lord will greatly bless you in the land which the Lord your God is giving you to possess as an inheritance— 5 only if you carefully obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe with care all these commandments which I command you today. 6 For the Lord your God will bless you just as He promised you; you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow; you shall reign over many nations, but they shall not reign over you.” Deuteronomy 15:1-6 NKJV
This promise is repeated in the “blessings of obedience” portion of Deuteronomy 28.
“The Lord will open to you His good treasure, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season, and to bless all the work of your hand. You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow.” Deuteronomy 28:12 NKJV
Second, the children of Israel were to willingly lend to each other so there would be no poor among them.
7 “If there is among you a poor man of your brethren, within any of the gates in your land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart nor shut your hand from your poor brother, 8 but you shall open your hand wide to him and willingly lend him sufficient for his need, whatever he needs.9 Beware lest there be a wicked thought in your heart, saying, ‘The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand,’ and your eye be evil against your poor brother and you give him nothing, and he cry out to the Lord against you, and it become sin among you. 10 You shall surely give to him, and your heart should not be grieved when you give to him, because for this thing the Lord your God will bless you in all your works and in all to which you put your hand. 11 For the poor will never cease from the land; therefore I command you, saying, ‘You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land.’” Deuteronomy 15:7-11 NKJV
For example, the whole harvest from a field did not belong to its owner. The gleaning and the corners were for the poor and the stranger.
“‘When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field when you reap, nor shall you gather any gleaning from your harvest. You shall leave them for the poor and for the stranger: I am the Lord your God.’ ” Leviticus 23:22 NKJV
My American upbringing on the importance of working hard was a good start on understanding God’s economy.
He who is slothful in his work Is a brother to him who is a great destroyer. Proverbs 18:9 NKJV
The lazy man will not plow because of winter; He will beg during harvest and have nothing. Proverbs 20:4 NKJV
Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before unknown men. Proverbs 22:29 NKJV
But it didn’t give me a full understanding.
16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?
18 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. 1 John 3:16-18 NKJV
One final note. The results of following God’s plan may not manifest in this life.
13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14 For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. 15 And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country.Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them. Hebrews 11:13-16 NKJV
In fact, two of the seven churches written to in Revelation got it wrong.
I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. Revelation 2:9 KJV
Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: Revelation 3:17 KJV
Let us keep on keeping on! Reaping is guaranteed if we don’t give up!
7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. 9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith. I’m reading through Deuteronomy, and it is striking me God’s solution for people devoted to bad ideas – death!
6 “If your brother, the son of your mother, your son or your daughter, the wife of your bosom, or your friend who is as your own soul, secretly entices you, saying, ‘Let us go and serve other gods,’ which you have not known, neither you nor your fathers, 7 of the gods of the people which are all around you, near to you or far off from you, from one end of the earth to the other end of the earth, 8 you shall not consent to him or listen to him, nor shall your eye pity him, nor shall you spare him or conceal him; 9 but you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people. 10 And you shall stone him with stones until he dies, because he sought to entice you away from the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. 11 So all Israel shall hear and fear, and not again do such wickedness as this among you.” Deuteronomy 13:6-11 NKJV
8 “If a matter arises which is too hard for you to judge, between degrees of guilt for bloodshed, between one judgment or another, or between one punishment or another, matters of controversy within your gates, then you shall arise and go up to the place which the Lord your God chooses. 9 And you shall come to the priests, the Levites, and to the judge there in those days, and inquire of them; they shall pronounce upon you the sentence of judgment. 10 You shall do according to the sentence which they pronounce upon you in that place which the Lord chooses. And you shall be careful to do according to all that they order you. 11 According to the sentence of the law in which they instruct you, according to the judgment which they tell you, you shall do; you shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left from the sentence which they pronounce upon you. 12 Now the man who acts presumptuously and will not heed the priest who stands to minister there before the Lord your God, or the judge, that man shall die. So you shall put away the evil from Israel. 13 And all the people shall hear and fear, and no longer act presumptuously.” Deuteronomy 17:8-13 NKJV
Jesus will soon return to earth to rule for 1000 years. This time of His reign is sometimes called the Millennial Kingdom. His saints will rule with Him.
4 And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 5 But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years. Revelation 20:4-6 NKJV
Jesus will rule with a rod of iron.
7 “I will declare the decree: The Lord has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. 8 Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’ ” Psalm 2:7-9 NKJV
And so will we His saints.
3 And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great, fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads. 4 His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to give birth, to devour her Child as soon as it was born. 5 She bore a male Child who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron. And her Child was caught up to God and His throne. 6 Then the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that they should feed her there one thousand two hundred and sixty days. Revelation 12:3-6 NKJV
24 “Now to you I say,and to the rest in Thyatira, as many as do not have this doctrine, who have not known thedepths of Satan, as they say,Iwill put on you no other burden.25 But hold fastwhat you have till I come.26 And he who overcomes, and keepsMy works until the end,to him I will give power over the nations—
27 ‘Heshall rule them with a rod of iron; They shall be dashed to pieces like the potter’s vessels’—
as I also have received from My Father;28 and I will give himthe morning star.” Revelation 2:24-28 NKJV
Death is possible in the millennium.
“No more shall an infant from there live but a few days, Nor an old man who has not fulfilled his days; For the child shall die one hundred years old, But the sinner being one hundred years old shall be accursed.” Isaiah 65:20 NKJV
Many ( / Most / All ?? ) people alive at the end of the millennium will rebel against God.
7 Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea. 9 They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them.10 The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. Revelation 20:7-10 NKJV
I used to think this passage applied to a short time after the battle of Armageddon, but now I think it may apply to the whole millennium.
5 Let the saints be joyful in glory; Let them sing aloud on their beds. 6 Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, And a two-edged sword in their hand, 7 To execute vengeance on the nations, And punishments on the peoples; 8 To bind their kings with chains, And their nobles with fetters of iron; 9 To execute on them the written judgment— This honor have all His saints.
I think “ruling with a rod of iron” might include executing people who hate God, and especially those who hate God and try to get others to hate Him too.

Years ago I went to a funeral held in a well-known Protestant denominational church. I couldn’t believe believe my ears. Nothing the pastor said would lead anyone to a saving knowledge of Jesus. The guest of honor in the casket at the front of the church was now in heaven, because, and I quote, “She was a good person.” I had heard of dead, worse-than-useless churches, but that was the first time I beheld a service in one. I was shocked. And grieved. It was an example of the blind leading the blind, with tragic results for all.
13 But He answered and said, “Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted.14 Let them alone.They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.” Matthew 15:13-14 NKJV
I am also troubled by those funerals I have attended where it is assumed everyone is a believer. There is Scripture spoken, favorites of the deceased – usually including Psalm 23 (which is slightly irrelevant because the person has already passed through the valley of the shadow of death). The songs are good and Scriptural, the Bible readings are valid, but in my opinion something is missing. The pastors never mentioned the need for a personal relationship with Jesus to go to heaven when you die. I know for a fact there were lost souls at one of these “everyone in the pews is a Christian” funerals. Opportunity was lost. Will those pastors have to give an account someday?

16 Now it came to pass at the end of seven days that the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore hear a word from My mouth, and give them warning from Me: 18 When I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life, that same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand.19 Yet, if you warn the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul.” Ezekiel 3:16-19 NKJV
The best funerals are those where the service includes the Good News of how to be saved. It doesn’t have to be long; “Paul’s gospel” is sufficient.
3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 NKJV
The “Romans Road” is a fine alternative.
3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
10:13 For “whoever callson the name of theLordshall be saved.”
If you have anything to do with a funeral service, I highly recommend the service include a short, simple gospel message. There will probably be people there who need to hear it. Make it a “good funeral” – point people to heaven!

In 2020 I wrote several posts on this verse, but I recently had an insight. I had been mostly focused on the “hates his life” part.
“He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.” John 12:25 NKJV
The insight is the importance of the “in this world” phrase.

See, I have a bit of trouble really hating my life. It’s good to be alive, to experience God’s creation. He’s even putting life in my body!
But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. Romans 8:11 NKJV
It is Biblical to be thankful, grateful, and enjoy God’s blessings in this life.
“Seven days you shall keep a sacred feast to the Lord your God in the place which the Lord chooses, because the Lord your God will bless you in all your produce and in all the work of your hands, so that you surely rejoice.” Deuteronomy 16:15 NKJV

I have God’s protection in this life. Nothing ill can happen to me apart from God’s will.

The only way I can really hate my life in this world is in comparison to my life in eternity. No one is going to steal my stuff.
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21 NKJV
There will be no more pain, sickness or death.
Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. 2 Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. 4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:1-4 NKJV
I’ll get to see the Father’s face, and get to know Him personally, which is the definition of eternal life.
And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. 4 They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads. Revelation 22:1-4 NKJV
“Andthis is eternal life, that they may know You,the only true God, and Jesus Christwhom You have sent.” John 17:3 NKJV
Eternal life has joy and pleasures we can’t even comprehend now.
“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” From 1 Corinthians 2:9 NKJV
You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Psalm 16:11 NKJV
Paul wrote about wanting to put on the pain-free, death-free eternal body.
For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, 3 if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. 4 For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. 5 Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. 2 Corinthians 5:1-5 NKJV

Perhaps this is one was of interpreting what Jesus said.
“He who loves his life will lose it, and he who is looking forward to eternal life so much he can’t hardly stand it will keep his life for eternal life.”
It seems to me this life is like smelling a fabulous dinner cooking, but I don’t get to take a bite of it until I meet Jesus. 🙂

10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. 2 Peter 3:10-13 NKJV

32 “Now learnthis parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near.33 So you also, when you see all these things, knowthatit is near—at the doors!34 Assuredly, I say to you,this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place.35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.” Matthew 24:32-35 NKJV
