Why Words Matter

If you read Genesis 1, you’ll see that God created mankind in a “higher class” than the animals.

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
Genesis 1:26 NKJV

God spoke everything into existence.

Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.

Then God said, “Let there be a firmament …”  and it was so. …

Then God said, “Let the waters …”; and it was so. …

11 Then God said, “Let the earth …”; and it was so.

14 Then God said, “Let there be lights …”; and it was so.

20 Then God said, “Let the waters abound …”  And God saw that it was good.

24 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth …”; and it was so.

From Genesis 1:3-25 NKJV

God created us such that our words have incredible power. After all, He created us in His image. This is a familiar Scripture for many.

22 So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God. 23 For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. 24 Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.”
Mark 11:22-24 NKJV

Let me remove some words.

So Jesus answered and said to them, “… For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says … and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.
From Mark 11:22-23 NKJV

Did that get your attention? We are used to the passage talking about the good. But I also believe it is true of the bad. If someone speaks and believes he is going to get fired from his job, he’s going to get fired.

This verse jumped out at me this month.

The mind of the intelligent seeks knowledge,
But the mouth of fools feeds on folly.
Proverbs 15:14 NASB

That is, a fool gets in a “negative feedback loop,” speaking death to his life:

“I got up this morning and the microwave didn’t work so I didn’t get any breakfast. Then I discovered that my car had a flat tire and I was late to work. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if I got fired. And then how am I going to pay my bills?”

May my words never defile me!

“It is not what enters into the mouth that defiles the man, but what proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man.”
Matthew 15:11 NASB

I agree with the psalmist.

May the words of my mouth
and the meditation of my heart
be pleasing in Your sight,
O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.
Psalms 19:14 BSB

Jesus is coming soon. Be ready!

32 “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors! 34 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”
Matthew 24:32-35 NKJV

34 But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. 35 For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.
Luke 21:34-36 NKJV

Proverbs 12 – Words!

These verses stood out to me yesterday. It must be I need to do better controlling what I say.

The thoughts of the righteous are right,
But the counsels of the wicked are deceitful.
The words of the wicked are, “Lie in wait for blood,”
But the mouth of the upright will deliver them.

13 The wicked is ensnared by the transgression of his lips,
But the righteous will come through trouble.
14 A man will be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth,
And the recompense of a man’s hands will be rendered to him.

17 He who speaks truth declares righteousness,
But a false witness, deceit.
18 There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword,
But the tongue of the wise promotes health.
19 The truthful lip shall be established forever,
But a lying tongue is but for a moment.

22 Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord,
But those who deal truthfully are His delight.

25 Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression,
But a good word makes it glad.

Proverbs 12:5-6, 13-14, 17-19, 22, 25 NKJV

Jesus is coming soon. Be ready!

Proverbs 10 – Words!

A couple days ago, reading Proverbs 10, I was struck how important words are. When things aren’t going my way 100%, sometimes I’m tempted to speak inappropriately. These Scriptures reminded me that I will be justified or condemned by my words!

10 He who winks with the eye causes trouble,
But a prating fool will fall.

11 The mouth of the righteous is a well of life,
But violence covers the mouth of the wicked.

13 Wisdom is found on the lips of him who has understanding,
But a rod is for the back of him who is devoid of understanding.

14 Wise people store up knowledge,
But the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.

18 Whoever hides hatred has lying lips,
And whoever spreads slander is a fool.

19 In the multitude of words sin is not lacking,
But he who restrains his lips is wise.
20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver;
The heart of the wicked is worth little.
21 The lips of the righteous feed many,
But fools die for lack of wisdom.

31 The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom,
But the perverse tongue will be cut out.
32 The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable,
But the mouth of the wicked what is perverse.

Proverbs 10:10-11, 13-14, 18-21, 31-32 NKJV

Overcoming Sin – Words and Thoughts

I have read Psalms 19 many times, but before last night I never realized the last three verses go together. The Psalmist asks God to keep him from sin in verses 12 and 13, and then in the last verse of the Psalm describes a mechanism for achieving victory!

12 Who can understand his errors?
Cleanse me from secret faults.
13 Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins;
Let them not have dominion over me.
Then I shall be blameless,
And I shall be innocent of great transgression.
14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in Your sight,
O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.
Psalms 19:12-14 NKJV

Controlling words and thoughts are key to not sinning!

33 “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit. 34 Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 A good man out of the good treasureof his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. 36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.
Matthew 12:33-37 NKJV

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.
2 Corinthians 10:3-6 NKJV

Elisha threw a stick in the water and an axe head floated to the surface.

So he went with them. And when they came to the Jordan, they cut down trees. But as one was cutting down a tree, the iron ax head fell into the water; and he cried out and said, “Alas, master! For it was borrowed.”

So the man of God said, “Where did it fall?” And he showed him the place. So he cut off a stick, and threw it in there; and he made the iron float. Therefore he said, “Pick it up for yourself.” So he reached out his hand and took it.
2 Kings 6:4-7 NKJV

In a perhaps similar manner, my use of colored pens and pencils seems to be able to make revelation to float up into my understanding. 🙂
