1 John – Study Preparation

God gave me outstanding talents for writing software. Relevant to Bible study, the two main talents are:

  1. I notice details.
  2. My mind automatically thinks in contradictions. That is, when I read something or hear something – without any conscious effort on my part – exceptions to what I read or heard leap to the front of my mind. Now that my beard is mostly gray I keep my mouth shut most of the time when someone says something that is only 99.5% true. As a rule they are talking in general and are completely disinterested in “edge cases” that disagree with their statement. But I didn’t always have this much discretion. 😉

The God-given talent of perceiving “edge-case conditions” that would cause software to fail means I can write the software to not fail if those conditions happened! I know people who could write more software in a day than I could, but I don’t know anyone who could write more reliable software than I could. I was born to distill thought into code.

But these strong talents mean I find trying to understand the book of 1 John intensely frustrating, almost to the point of tears. Why? On the surface 1 John is full of seeming contradictions both within itself, and with the rest of the Bible. Here are three of the apparent contradictions.

Plural / Singular Authorship

Plural authorship in the first chapter.

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life— the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to usthat which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.
1 John 1:1-4 NKJV

Singular authorship thereafter.

… these things I write to you …
I write no new commandment to you… Again, a new commandment I write to you …
12 I write to you, little children, …
13 I write to you, fathers, …
I write to you, young men, …
I write to you, little children, …
14 I have written to you, fathers, …
I have written to you, young men, …
1 John 2:1, 7-8, 12-14 NKJV

Know All, Don’t Need Teachers

John (singular?) writes,

20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.
27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.
1 John 2:20, 27 NKJV

Paul writes differently about knowing it all and needing teachers.

For we know in part and we prophesy in part.
1 Corinthians 13:9 NKJV

11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;
Ephesians 4:11-13 NKJV

“No one has seen God at any time.”

John writes,

No one has seen God at any time.
1 John 4:12 NKJV

This seems to contradict not only what plural-John wrote,

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life— the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us— that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.
1 John 1:1-3 NKJV

but also what Jesus Himself said.

Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
John 14:9 NKJV

These seeming contradiction bother this detail-oriented, exception-thinking individual very much! It has been my habit when reading 1 John to not “dive deep,” but just notice the more well-known passages:

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9 NKJV

You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
1 John 4:4 NKJV

For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.
1 John 5:4 NKJV

But now I am feeling the need to really study 1 John. God’s word is Truth, and with the Holy Spirit’s help, I can understand it. Step one, for me, is to be able to see all the Scripture without flipping pages. I need to be able to look from one place to another, quickly, without losing focus or concentration. Note that this is nothing new for me. These are pictures of some of my past computers. I am much more able to maintain concentration writing software if I can just glance to find information, and not fumble with a mouse.

Now you have seen a 7-monitor laptop. 🙂 It’s the first picture.

I photocopied 1 John from my copy of The Scriptures. Since I knew there would be plenty of space, I copied 2 John and 3 John in different colors. Here are pictures of making the study poster.

1, 2, & 3 John Photocopied

Trimming completed
Pad of 18″ x 24″ paper
Using rubber cement. It doesn’t wrinkle paper like white glue.
Poster complete. Ready to study!

Here are a couple pictures taken two or three hours later. I have not yet resolved the apparent conflicts, but I’m starting to get an inkling on one of them.

If this seems like a lot of work, consider how hard you would work if you knew there was buried treasure in your backyard.

My son, if you receive my words,
And treasure my commands within you,
So that you incline your ear to wisdom,
And apply your heart to understanding;
Yes, if you cry out for discernment,
And lift up your voice for understanding,
If you seek her as silver,
And search for her as for hidden treasures;
Then you will understand the fear of the Lord,
And find the knowledge of God.
Proverbs 2:1-5 NKJV

Parallel Matthew 24, Mark 13 and Luke 21 Posters

Note: A KJV, electronic version of this study is available here: KJV Parallel Matthew 24, Mark 13 and Luke 21

I wanted to study the “Signs of the Times” passages in the Gospels, and I know that flipping back and forth in my Bible isn’t the best way for me. So I decided to make a “Harmony of the Gospels” poster using my HalleluYah Scriptures Bible.

I had a couple “helpers.” 🙂

It took two pages.

Use these. Print, share, whatever.

I’m ready to study! Yes, I like colors. 🙂

I noticed something after I finished. While working on the two-page poster, I wasn’t thinking about anything else. Reading and rereading Matthew, Mark and Luke to decide where to cut and paste, then performing the manual actions, took all my attention (apart from interruptions from my “helpers.” 🙂 ) It was almost like a vacation. Try it!

Revelation 1 – 3 Poster

I was flipping and flipping the pages of my Bible in Revelation chapters 1 though 3, trying to understand the letters to the churches better, and trying to figure out if all the descriptions of Jesus in chapter 1 were reflected in the letter introductions. I got tired of flipping and decided to make a quick poster. I love it! Chapter 1 is across the top, and the letters of chapters 2 and 3 are side by side.

If I make another, I will use thicker paper. The cardboard “Tri-Fold Display Board” is a very uneven surface for writing and highlighting, with just standard printer paper glued to it.

Are you following God's plan for your life?
   You should.
      Your plan sucks.
      It really, really sucks.

Wallpaper in My Heavenly Mansion

In the 1990’s I started working on ways to get more out of my time spent studying the book of Proverbs. I called it A Year of Wisdom. Full-size images.

“Daily Pages” in two of several formats.

One format of the “Monthly Pages.”

Perhaps my most significant discovery was a way to hear God’s voice over time. The insights I received from the discipline of “distilling” notes were profound, and sometimes downright shocking.

I wrote software to make a concordance of Proverbs in six different “flavors.” The flavor I thought would be the least useful turned out to be the most useful. 🙂

The most useful version IME.

I wanted to see the entire book of Proverbs at once, so I made several prototypes like a folding map.

This was fantastic for seeing things in the whole book!

I knew this would be a winner, so I bought a 24″ wide printer and high-end publishing software. At the time, the common word-processing programs couldn’t handle 24″ x 48″ page size. (I had a good salary so I had funds to partially implement the 2nd thing I wish I had been taught in school.)

Large Format Printer

This is Proverbs, NIV, formatted to fit in a standard desk blotter. Please pardon the folds. My tubes of rolled samples are “somewhere.”

I loved it! I could sit for hours with my colored pencils, studying the whole book of Proverbs. Note these verses on the topic of diligence, and its inverse, laziness.

To bring this part of this post to a close, somewhere along the line I paid Zondervan a few hundred bucks for the right to produce and distribute the NIV Proverbs in any form and format my little ol’ heart desired. I probably would have succeeded in commercializing the paper and/or software forms of these study methods, if my personal life hadn’t gone to hell, eventually ending in divorce. Someday I may blog about failure when you’re doing everything you know to do to succeed. All I have to do is figure out what to write…

You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.
Psalm 56:8 NLT

He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken.
Isaiah 25:8 ESV

“For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; ‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’ ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.‘”
Revelation 7:17 NIV

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
Revelation 21:4 ESV

The Point Is

The point is, I know I love being able to see entire books of the Bible. I think I made maps and desk-blotter prints of other parts of the Bible too, not just Proverbs. For years I have wanted to have wallpaper of the Bible in my home. Recently I have been reading Paul’s letters. One of the things that is standing out this time through them is the similarities. Oh, I can flip back and forth in my Bible, comparing and contrasting, but I know I would much rather get up and go to the “Wall of Paul” in my house. 🙂

It is looking unlikely that I’ll get this done in this life, but I’ll definitely have it in the next. Consider yourself invited to come to my mansion, grab some colors, and we’ll study the Word by writing on the walls.  🙂

img_1085

I love colors. I used to have to wear the boring uniform of the male professional – either a depressing light-black suit, a stale grey suit, or a lifeless navy-blue suit. I rebelled by wearing the wildest tie I thought I could get away with.

img_1066

Are there Bibles in heaven? Um, yeah. In some form, yes. I suspect our earthly Bibles are the Cliff Notes of what we’ll have in heaven.

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
Matthew 24:35 ESV

I wrote this post to encourage you to think about your real home. 🙂

Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
Colossians 3:2 ESV

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:19-21 ESV
