After taking pictures of a decent sunset last night, my thoughts turned to the upcoming “blood moon” eclipse.
I’m in a rural area, far from glowing city lights, ideal for taking eclipse photos.
I set up on a tripod and switched to manual mode so I could control the shutter speed, aperture, and sensitivity (ISO).
The biggest surprise of the shoot was how far the stars and moon appeared to move in just a few seconds. Here is a photo and its crop of a 25-second time exposure.
I had to boost the sensitivity (and accept the noise) to speed up the shutter to get reasonable pics of the darkened moon. This one is a half-second exposure.
A passing cloud provided an “artsy” photo. The crescent below the moon is a lens artifact.
I had fun adjusting settings trying to get details of both light and dark areas of the moon.
