Our God is a Consuming Fire – The Fear of the Lord

Many people say that The Fear of the Lord is not being afraid of God, but having reverence for Him. I suppose they’re right about not being afraid of God, as John discusses.

17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. 19 We love Him because He first loved us.
1 John 4:17-19 NKJV

However, speaking for me, being afraid of God was an excellent place to start! Consider these words of Jesus.

“And I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him!
Luke 12:4-5 NKJV

That is serious. Indeed, fear Him who can cast into hell!

At judgment day, the unsaved may be engulfed in fire as they are judged, before being thrown into the lake of fire, the second death.

“I watched till thrones were put in place,
And the Ancient of Days was seated;
His garment was white as snow,
And the hair of His head was like pure wool.
His throne was a fiery flame,
Its wheels a burning fire;
10 A fiery stream issued
And came forth from before Him.
A thousand thousands ministered to Him;
Ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him.
The court was seated,
And the books were opened.
Daniel 7:9-10 NKJV

The NIV paints quite a picture in the same passage.

“As I looked,

“thrones were set in place,
    and the Ancient of Days took his seat.
His clothing was as white as snow;
    the hair of his head was white like wool.
His throne was flaming with fire,
    and its wheels were all ablaze.
10 A river of fire was flowing,
    coming out from before him.
Thousands upon thousands attended him;
    ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.
The court was seated,
    and the books were opened.
Daniel 7:9-10 NIV

Here is a well-known passage from Hebrews.

28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. 29 For our God is a consuming fire.
Hebrews 12:28-29 NKJV

(ToDo: Study the Greek of the end of Hebrews 10:28 re compare/contrast reverence and godly fear. )

I don’t want to go to hell and be in torment forever and ever so I have been studying God’s Word to find out how to get and stay on God’s good side. My current understanding is God created everything for Himself.

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. 18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
Colossians 1:15-18 NKJV

For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.
Romans 11:36 NKJV

After sin entered His creation, God has only two classifications: His servants, and those who are not His servants.

Then you shall again discern
Between the righteous and the wicked,
Between one who serves God
And one who does not serve Him.
Malachi 3:18 NKJV

Fortunately, God is Good, and He wants everyone to make it into the servant class.

Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
Ezekiel 33:11 KJV

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
1 Timothy 2:1-4 NKJV

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
John 3:16 NKJV

The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
2 Peter 3:9 NKJV

And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.
Revelation 22:17 NKJV

As I have been abiding in Jesus, I am becoming perfected in His love. The being afraid of God has decreased, as the reverence, awe and love for Him has increased. I so look forward to seeing Him face to face!

As for me, I will see Your face in righteousness;
I shall be satisfied when I awake in Your likeness.
Psalms 17:15 NKJV

And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads. There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.
Revelation 22:1-5 NKJV

Jesus is coming soon. Be ready!

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.
1 Thessalonians 5:4-6 NKJV

32 “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors! 34 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”
Matthew 24:32-35 NKJV

34 But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. 35 For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.
Luke 21:34-36 NKJV

Mop, Then Sweep

Years ago I had a part-time job as a building maintenance engineer, or as the position was called at the time, a janitor. We were trained to always, always sweep before mopping. That way you don’t have to change the water as often.

However, I have found it often makes sense to mop first, then sweep. This puts much less dust in the air. This is especially true of ultra-fine dust like drywall dust that’s generated when you have to cut holes in the wall to fix plumbing problems.

Drywall dust seems to love to jump up in the air if it even sees a broom, float around awhile, and settle on everything. So I mop first, and after the floor dries, I sweep up the remaining chunks without raising any dust at all.

Thank you Father for helping me do a better job in less time. 🙂

I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.
Proverbs 8:12 KJV

“What about a shop vacuum?” some might be thinking. Well, not all shop vacs have filters to strain ultra-fine drywall dust. These usually-inexpensive vacuums are like drywall-dust volcanoes, spreading a layer of fine dust everywhere. Once was enough. Shop vacs with the expensive filters don’t always work correctly, and I don’t like to “waste” the costly filters on dust easily mopped up.

Today’s post is admittedly a bit light on theology, but I’ve been busy. 😉

Father, I’m Thankful!

Father, I’m thankful! I’m thankful that Jesus died for my sins, so that I can have eternal life!

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
John 3:16 NKJV

For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,
1 Corinthians 15:3-4 NKJV

that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Romans 10:9-10 NKJV

I’m thankful for all your blessings now in this life, Father.

Bless the Lord, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget not all His benefits:
Who forgives all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases,
Who redeems your life from destruction,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,
Who satisfies your mouth with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
Psalms 103:1-5 NKJV

who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.
1 Peter 2:24 NKJV

And Father, I’m thankful for how great the next life will be, even though I can’t even imagine all the pleasures and blessings!

But as it is written:

“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”
1 Corinthians 2:9 NKJV

How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God!
Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings.
They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house,
And You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures.
For with You is the fountain of life;
In Your light we see light.

In Your presence is fullness of joy;
At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Consider Having a Printed Concordance

I’m prepared to find verses in the Bible whose references I don’t remember if the internet and/or the electricity goes off. I have a printed copy of Strong’s Concordance, specifically this one brought from Amazon.com: The New Strong’s Expanded Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible

The thickest part of the book is the concordance, an alphabetical list of all the words in the King James Version Bible.

In the main concordance, the 3rd column is the Strong’s Number in the corresponding Hebrew and Greek dictionaries. These dictionaries are included in this edition. (The “Student Edition” I had many years ago did not include the Hebrew and Greek dictionaries.)

Incidentally, the printed edition allows one to answer questions like, “How many different Greek words are translated ‘love’ in the KJV New Testament?” From the picture above, there are at least four: G25, G5368, G26, and G2309. (Marked in the picture below.) I know of no software that can easily do this.

Finally, this edition has a number of interesting and useful topics at the end, including fulfilled prophecies, Jesus’ parables, and a really impressive harmony of the gospels.

I love being able to quickly find Bible verses by searching the internet. But I’m also prepared to find a particular verse if the internet and the electricity are both off. You too may want to be prepared.

Blessed, Sweet Sleep

I believe the verses at the end of all my recent posts — Jesus is indeed coming soon! So of late I have been very careful to do the things I recommend before heading to bed. I make sure I have read my Bible, prayed (including daily repentance), confessed the Word of God, have read Psalms 91, and put on my armored pajamas – the whole armor of God. When my head hit the pillow sometimes my mind wants to worry, so I think about these Scriptures until the temptation to worry passes.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.
Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the Lord and depart from evil.
Proverbs 3:5-7 NKJV

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
1 Peter 5:6-7 NKJV

The result is I am having wonderful, blessed, sweet sleep! When I wake up I’m usually thinking about Scripture, and my first words are, “Thank You, Father!” These passages are becoming true for me. 🙂

I will bless the Lord who has given me counsel;
My heart also instructs me in the night seasons.
I have set the Lord always before me;
Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.
Psalms 16:7-8 NKJV

You will keep him in perfect peace,
Whose mind is stayed on You,
Because he trusts in You.
Isaiah 26:3 NKJV

Good sleep is a promise of God.

I will both lie down in peace, and sleep;
For You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.
Psalms 4:8 NKJV

Unless the Lord builds the house,
They labor in vain who build it;
Unless the Lord guards the city,
The watchman stays awake in vain.
It is vain for you to rise up early,
To sit up late,
To eat the bread of sorrows;
For so He gives His beloved sleep.
Psalms 127:1-2 NKJV

1951 Movie “Scrooge” or “A Christmas Carol”

This passage from Proverbs reminds me of Jacob Marley’s chains from Charles Dickens’ story A Christmas Carol.

21 For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord,
And He ponders all his paths.
22 His own iniquities entrap the wicked man,
And he is caught in the cords of his sin.
23 He shall die for lack of instruction,
And in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.
Proverbs 5:21-23 NKJV

Dickens’ book isn’t 100% accurate – the dead don’t walk the earth in spirit form, for example. But I like the book, and movies of the book that acknowledge God. There is enough “meat” in the story that those seeking God can be motivated to search further. The book is available for free download from Gutenberg.org – A Christmas Carol in Prose; Being a Ghost Story of Christmas by Charles Dickens

My favorite movie is the 1951 Scrooge staring Alastair Sim. (Released as Scrooge it now also goes by the title A Christmas Carol.) Here is a link to the original black and white version.

A Christmas Carol Scrooge 1951

In this scene from the movie Bob Crachit’s son reads a selection from Psalms 91.

I recommend both the book and the 1951 movie. 🙂

Know The Whole Word of God

Consider the so-called Romans Road of Salvation, plus three extra verses from Romans 10.

3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. 13 For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Romans 3:23, 6:23, 10:9-13 NKJV

Romans 10:13 is a quote from Joel, and also shows up in the book of Acts.

And it shall come to pass
That whoever calls on the name of the Lord
Shall be saved.
For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance,
As the Lord has said,
Among the remnant whom the Lord calls.
Joel 2:32 NKJV

And it shall come to pass
That whoever calls on the name of the Lord
Shall be saved.
Acts 2:21 NKJV

For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.
Romans 10:13 NKJV

Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved is a wonderful promise, but did you know it is not the complete story? The Bible also teaches that there comes a time when it is too late to call on God and have Him answer.

Seek the Lord while He may be found,
Call upon Him while He is near.
Isaiah 55:6 NKJV

24 Because I have called and you refused,
I have stretched out my hand and no one regarded,
25 Because you disdained all my counsel,
And would have none of my rebuke,
26 I also will laugh at your calamity;
I will mock when your terror comes,
27 When your terror comes like a storm,
And your destruction comes like a whirlwind,
When distress and anguish come upon you.

28 Then they will call on me, but I will not answer;
They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me.
29 Because they hated knowledge
And did not choose the fear of the Lord,
30 They would have none of my counsel
And despised my every rebuke.
Proverbs 1:24-30 NKJV

It is important to know all Scripture so you don’t fall into error.

16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16-17  NKJV

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.
Matthew 24:35 NKJV

I agree we are saved only by grace through faith.

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9 NKJV

But people who believe in Once Saved, Always Saved discount much Scripture.

18:24 “But when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, shall he live? All the righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered; because of the unfaithfulness of which he is guilty and the sin which he has committed, because of them he shall die.

33:13 “When I say to the righteous that he shall surely live, but he trusts in his own righteousness and commits iniquity, none of his righteous works shall be remembered; but because of the iniquity that he has committed, he shall die.
Ezekiel 18:24, 33:13 NKJV

They say, “That’s Old Testament!” How about something from Revelation? That should apply to people alive now. Go to the very end of the Bible, Revelation 22:21, and back up two verses.

And if anyone takes away from the words of this book of prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.
Revelation 22:19 BSB

To me, this verse clearly teaches that there is something one can do to lose salvation. I don’t see any other possible interpretation! But you study and make up your own mind. These are matters of eternal life and eternal death.

Make every effort to present yourself approved to God, an unashamed workman who accurately handles the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:15 BSB

Jesus is coming soon. Be ready!

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

Overcoming Bad Habits – Psalms 107

We can’t do anything apart from Jesus, not even cleaning ourselves up.

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.
John 15:5 NKJV

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
Romans 8:1, 13-14 NKJV

Psalms 107 has great promises of God’s deliverance from things we cannot fix ourselves.

Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He delivered them out of their distresses.

For He satisfies the longing soul,
And fills the hungry soul with goodness.

13 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He saved them out of their distresses.
14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death,
And broke their chains in pieces.

16 For He has broken the gates of bronze,
And cut the bars of iron in two.

19 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He saved them out of their distresses.
20 He sent His word and healed them,
And delivered them from their destructions.

28 Then they cry out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He brings them out of their distresses.
Psalms 107:6, 9, 13-14, 16, 19-20, 28 NKJV

All glory to God!

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.
Ephesians 5:25-27 NKJV

On Judging

In The Sermon on the Mount Jesus indeed taught Judge Not, Lest Ye Be Judged.

Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
Matthew 7:1-5 NKJV

Paul echos and expands upon this type of hypocrisy. Note the danger of, IMO, hell.

Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things. And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who “will render to each one according to his deeds”: eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; 10 but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 11 For there is no partiality with God.
Romans 2:1-11 NKJV

(As an aside, this promise of God’s wrath for this kind of hypocrisy flies in the face of the Once Saved, Always Saved doctrine, since the book of Romans is clearly written to believers.)

Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ:

To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.
Romans 1:6-8 KJV

So is Judge Not, Lest Ye Be Judged the whole story? In some ways I wish it was. Then I would never have to wonder whether God is prompting me to confront a fellow believer. “Jim, I know I’m not perfect, so I’m not judging. But I have been praying and I am very concerned about …” That’s a tough call, and I have almost never done it. I’m too aware of my own failings, and Judge Not, Lest Ye Be Judged is easy and comfortable to tell myself.

But Judge Not, Lest Ye Be Judged is not the whole story. In the same sermon as Judge Not, Lest Ye Be Judged, indeed recorded in the same chapter, Jesus tells us to use enough judgment to know when we are being lied to.

15 Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.
Matthew 7:15-20 NKJV

In this passage Jesus teaches us to judge!

57 Yes, and why, even of yourselves, do you not judge what is right? 58 When you go with your adversary to the magistrate, make every effort along the way to settle with him, lest he drag you to the judge, the judge deliver you to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. 59 I tell you, you shall not depart from there till you have paid the very last mite.”
Luke 12:57-59 NKJV

Paul writes that the church itself ought to be able to judge between believers in conflict.

Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unrighteous, and not before the saints? Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world will be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters? Do you not know that we shall judge angels? How much more, things that pertain to this life? If then you have judgments concerning things pertaining to this life, do you appoint those who are least esteemed by the church to judge? I say this to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you, not even one, who will be able to judge between his brethren? But brother goes to law against brother, and that before unbelievers!
1 Corinthians 6:1-6 NKJV

(Paul continues with Scripture that in my understanding clearly refutes OSAS. 1 Corinthians is addressed to believers, not to the world. Why is this stern warning here if it isn’t real?)

Now therefore, it is already an utter failure for you that you go to law against one another. Why do you not rather accept wrong? Why do you not rather let yourselves be cheated? No, you yourselves do wrong and cheat, and you do these things to your brethren! Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
1 Corinthians 6:7-11 NKJV

I believe the Bible teaches we are to use judgment to help each other overcome sin.

Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:1-2 NKJV

12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; 13 but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
Hebrews 3:12-13 NKJV

24 And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, 25 in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, 26 and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.
2 Timothy 2:24-26 NKJV

The last two verses of James are especially important. They say a believer can wander from the truth and be turned back, saving the soul from death. In verse 20 the Greek word for death is thanatos, which includes the possibility of hell.

19 Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.
James 5:19-20 NKJV

2288 thánatos (derived from 2348 /thnḗskō, “to die”) – physical or spiritual death; (figuratively) separation from the life (salvation) of God forever by dying without first experiencing death to self to receive His gift of salvation.

But using judgment without judging is a very narrow path!

11 Do not speak evil of one another, brethren. He who speaks evil of a brother and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12 There is one Lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. Who are you to judge another?
James 4:11-12 NKJV

10 But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. 11 For it is written:

As I live, says the Lord,
Every knee shall bow to Me,
And every tongue shall confess to God.”

12 So then each of us shall give account of himself to God. 13 Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother’s way.
Romans 14:10-13 NKJV

Judge Not, Lest Ye Be Judged clearly applies to self-righteous hypocrisy, but it is not the answer to all situations. I am still learning about this.

21 Jesus answered and said to them, “I did one work, and you all marvel. 22 Moses therefore gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. 23 If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath? 24 Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.
John 7:21-24 NKJV

Jesus is coming soon. Be ready!

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

Meditation – The Write-Right Rite

If my last name was Wright this post’s title would have been Meditation – Wright’s Write-Right Rite. 😉

I try to post something hopefully-useful every day. This means I spend perhaps over an hour per day meditating on the Word of God as I work out what I am going to say. It has become part of my daily discipline, and I have been blessed by doing it.

32 “Now therefore, listen to me, my children,
For blessed are those who keep my ways.
33 Hear instruction and be wise,
And do not disdain it.
34 Blessed is the man who listens to me,
Watching daily at my gates,
Waiting at the posts of my doors.
35 For whoever finds me finds life,
And obtains favor from the Lord;
36 But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul;
All those who hate me love death.”
Proverbs 8:32-36 NKJV

Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge,
But he who hates reproof is stupid.
Proverbs 12:1 NASB

23 Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. 24 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.
Luke 9:23-24 NKJV

I have benefitted much by trying to write something helpful every day. If you are not doing something similar, I recommend you start. It doesn’t have to be public, you can keep your thoughts confined to a private notebook. But I urge you to try, and to look up relevant Bible verses and write them too. I’m convinced it is a good way to implement this verse:

Your word I have hidden in my heart,
That I might not sin against You.
Psalms 119:11 NKJV

Jesus is coming soon. Be ready!
