The Heart of the Believer

Before we get saved, our hearts are truly wicked and evil.

The heart is deceitful above all things,
And desperately wicked;
Who can know it?
10 I, the Lord, search the heart,
I test the mind,
Even to give every man according to his ways,
According to the fruit of his doings.
Jeremiah 17:9-10 NKJV

The wicked heart bears wicked fruit.

18 “But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. 19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. 20 These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.”
Matthew 15:18-20 NKJV

But when we get saved, Jesus takes up residence in our hearts.

That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
Ephesians 3:17 KJV

God performs a heart transplant!

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.
Ezekiel 36:26 BSB

He writes His laws in our hearts.

“This is the covenant I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord. I will put My laws in their hearts and inscribe them on their minds.”
Hebrews 10:16 BSB

It is clear that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.
2 Corinthians 3:3 BSB

Jesus’ blood has been sprinkled on our hearts.

19 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.
Hebrews 10:19-23 NKJV

When God has completed His work on our hearts, they are now used for good!

33 “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit. 34 Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks35 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. 36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
Matthew 12:33-37 NKJV

43 “For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.44 For every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. 45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
Luke 6:43-45 NKJV

Hannah prayed in her heart.

12 And it happened, as she continued praying before the Lord, that Eli watched her mouth. 13 Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk. 14 So Eli said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Put your wine away from you!”

15 But Hannah answered and said, “No, my lord, I am a woman of sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor intoxicating drink, but have poured out my soul before the Lord. 16 Do not consider your maidservant a wicked woman, for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief I have spoken until now.”

17 Then Eli answered and said, “Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition which you have asked of Him.
1 Samuel 1:12-17 NKJV

God can put talents and abilities in our hearts.

He also has put in his heart to teach, both he and Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan.”
Exodus 35:34 NASB

God can direct us through our hearts.

Each one should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not out of regret or compulsion. For God loves a cheerful giver.
2 Corinthians 9:7 BSB

The Lord said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites to bring me an offering. You are to receive the offering for me from everyone whose heart prompts them to give.
Exodus 25:1-2 NIV

20 Then the whole Israelite community withdrew from Moses’ presence, 21 and everyone who was willing and whose heart moved them came and brought an offering to the Lord for the work on the tent of meeting, for all its service, and for the sacred garments.
Exodus 35:20-21 NIV

The plans of the heart belong to man, but the reply of the tongue is from the LORD.
Proverbs 16:1 BSB

A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.
Proverbs 16:9 BSB

We need to guard our hearts!

Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow springs of life.
Proverbs 4:23 BSB

The passage continues with details on guarding / keeping our hearts.

23 Keep your heart with all diligence,
For out of it spring the issues of life.
24 Put away from you a deceitful mouth,
And put perverse lips far from you.
25 Let your eyes look straight ahead,
And your eyelids look right before you.
26 Ponder the path of your feet,
And let all your ways be established.
27 Do not turn to the right or the left;
Remove your foot from evil.
Proverbs 4:23-27 NKJV

Remember “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks“? We need to keep putting in our hearts what we want to come out!

“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”
Deuteronomy 6:6-9 NKJV

The law of his God is in his heart;
None of his steps shall slide.
Psalms 37:31 NKJV

Then I said, “Behold, I come;
In the scroll of the book it is written of me.
I delight to do Your will, O my God,
And Your law is within my heart.
Psalms 40:7-8 NKJV

Your word I have hidden in my heart,
That I might not sin against You.
Psalms 119:11 NKJV

“Listen to Me, you who know righteousness,
You people in whose heart is My law:
Do not fear the reproach of men,
Nor be afraid of their insults.
For the moth will eat them up like a garment,
And the worm will eat them like wool;
But My righteousness will be forever,
And My salvation from generation to generation.”
Isaiah 51:7-8 NKJV

When we mess up, we should ask God for forgiveness and restoration.

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Make me hear joy and gladness,
That the bones You have broken may rejoice.
Hide Your face from my sins,
And blot out all my iniquities.

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me away from Your presence,
And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
Psalms 51:7-11 NKJV

Having a new, clean heart from God is critical!

For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Romans 10:10 NKJV

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

The Word in the Heart

In the Parable of the Sower Jesus makes it clear that His Word goes into the heart.

“And these are the ones by the wayside where the word is sown. When they hear, Satan comes immediately and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts.
Mark 4:15 NKJV

Here are other Scriptures that confirm the Word is in the hearts of believers.

30 The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom,
And his tongue talks of justice.
31 The law of his God is in his heart;
None of his steps shall slide.
Psalms 37:30-31 NKJV

I delight to do Your will, O my God,
And Your law is within my heart.
Psalms 40:8 NKJV

Your word I have hidden in my heart,
That I might not sin against You.
Psalms 119:11 NKJV

Listen to Me, you who know righteousness,
You people in whose heart is My law:
Do not fear the reproach of men,
Nor be afraid of their insults.
For the moth will eat them up like a garment,
And the worm will eat them like wool;
But My righteousness will be forever,
And My salvation from generation to generation.”
Isaiah 51:7-8 NKJV

33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
Jeremiah 31:33-34 NKJV

It is the Word in good soil that bears fruit!

But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.
Mark 4:20 NKJV

Teaching From The Heart

My high school chemistry teacher quit teaching to take a job with an oil company and make much more money. I had other teachers who could have made more money if they had quit teaching to do something else, but they chose to stay high school teachers. You could say they had a heart for teaching, but my chemistry teacher didn’t. You would be right. Teaching from the heart is a gift from God.

30 And Moses said to the children of Israel, “See, the Lord has called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah; 31 and He has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom and understanding, in knowledge and all manner of workmanship, 32 to design artistic works, to work in gold and silver and bronze, 33 in cutting jewels for setting, in carving wood, and to work in all manner of artistic workmanship.

34 And He has put in his heart the ability to teach, in him and Aholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. 35 He has filled them with skill to do all manner of work of the engraver and the designer and the tapestry maker, in blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine linen, and of the weaver—those who do every work and those who design artistic works.”
Exodus 35:30-35 NKJV

I taught a couple of college-level computer classes, and I did some teaching in the Army – every soldier is a teacher to those under him or her – but I don’t think I ever had the heart of a teacher. I suppose teaching was for me “just a job” like my chemistry teacher, not a passion like many of my other high school teachers. If I ever teach again, I will ask God for the heart of a teacher, and prepare myself like Ezra.

For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the Law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach statutes and ordinances in Israel.
Ezra 7:10 NKJV

Blog Post Fail – Pharaoh’s Heart

I watched a YouTube video where the pastor, who knows Biblical Hebrew, said in passing that God didn’t harden Pharaoh’s heart to not let the children of Israel leave Egypt, he strengthened Pharaoh’s heart. That is, God didn’t make Pharaoh evil, He just increased what was already in Pharaoh’s heart. I investigated this idea, with the intention of making a blog post about it. Indeed, one of my translations does sometimes use the word strengthen.

And יהוה said to Mosheh, “As you go back to Mitsrayim, see that you do all those wonders before Pharaoh which I have put in your hand. But I am going to strengthen his heart, so that he does not let the people go.”
‭‭Shemoth (Exodus)‬ ‭4:21‬ ‭TS2009‬‬

Investigating further, in the KJV, harden or hardened occurs in Exodus 19 times in 19 different verses. Four different Hebrew words are translated as harden or hardened: H2388, H3513, H3515, and H7185.

And the LORD said unto Moses, When thou goest to return into Egypt, see that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: but I will harden his heart, that he shall not let the people go.
Exodus 4:21 KJV  Hebrew  H2388

But when Pharaoh saw that there was respite, he hardened his heart, and hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said.
Exodus 8:15 KJV  Hebrew  H3513

And the LORD said unto Moses, Pharaoh’s heart is hardened, he refuseth to let the people go.
Exodus 7:14 KJV  Hebrew  H3515

And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt.
Exodus 7:3 KJV  Hebrew  H7185

Before I continue, consider the difficulties and complexity there might be in translating these two English sentences into another language.

  • We eat what we can, and what we can’t, we can.
  • Take this lead, and lead the lead burrow to the old lead mine by Lead, South Dakota.

These are some other KJV verses that have these same four Hebrew words translated harden or hardened in the verses above.

And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.
1 Samuel 30:6 KJV  Hebrew  H2388

And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold.
Genesis 13:2 KJV  Hebrew  H3513

And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen: and it was a very great company.
Genesis 50:9 KJV  Hebrew  H3515

And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god.
1 Samuel 5:7 KJV  Hebrew  H7185

So harden or hardened is also translated: encouraged, rich, great, and is sore. Are you kidding? At this point I don’t have the knowledge or insight to determine if God hardened or strengthened Pharaoh’s heart. But I would like to be able to! I’m getting tired of all the inaccuracies of translation. See this post if you haven’t. I recycled the photo selfie for this post. 😉

Two Interesting Heart Scriptures

The first scripture I find interesting is a person’s heart is a reflection of the person.

As in water face reflects face,
So the heart of man reflects man.
Proverbs 27:19 NASB

As in water – face – face – so – heart – of a man – the man.
Proverbs 27:19 Interlinear

In Mark 9:17-27 apparent epilepsy is the result of an impure spirit. In this passage, it appears at least some strokes may also have a spiritual component.

37 Then in the morning, when Nabal was sober, his wife told him all these things, and his heart failed him and he became like a stone. 38 About ten days later, the Lord struck Nabal and he died.
1 Samuel 25:37-38 NIV

37 But in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife told him these things, his heart died within him and he became [paralyzed, helpless as] a stone. 38 And about ten days after that, the Lord smote Nabal and he died.
1 Samuel 25:37-38 AMPC

I have more half-formed thoughts about these passages, and when they are fully-formed I will expand this post. 🙂

Decisions From The Heart

The Bible teaches us to use common sense making decisions.

28 “For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it 29 lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish’? 31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace.”
Luke 14:28-32 NKJV

But some decisions come from the heart.

22 All who were willing, men and women alike, came and brought gold jewelry of all kinds: brooches, earrings, rings and ornaments. They all presented their gold as a wave offering to the Lord. 23 Everyone who had blue, purple or scarlet yarn or fine linen, or goat hair, ram skins dyed red or the other durable leather brought them. 24 Those presenting an offering of silver or bronze brought it as an offering to the Lord, and everyone who had acacia wood for any part of the work brought it. 25 Every skilled woman spun with her hands and brought what she had spun—blue, purple or scarlet yarn or fine linen. 26 And all the women who were willing and had the skill spun the goat hair. 27 The leadersbrought onyx stones and other gems to be mounted on the ephod and breastpiece. 28 They also brought spices and olive oil for the light and for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense. 29 All the Israelite men and women who were willing brought to the Lord freewill offerings for all the work the Lord through Moses had commanded them to do.
Exodus 35:20-29 NIV

“Give Till It Hurts” seems to have been written in Paul’s Epistle to the Philistines. 😉 The Bible says this about the heart and giving.

Each one should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not out of regret or compulsion. For God loves a cheerful giver.

Thought Prayers, Prayers of the Heart

I have heard some people say that if you are not speaking words, you are not praying. That is, they believe there is no such thing as “thought prayers,” praying to God in your mind or from your heart. I disagree. I believe thoughts can be prayers. Consider this passage of Nehemiah. Nehemiah was the king’s cup bearer.

And it came to pass in the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was before him, that I took the wine and gave it to the king. Now I had never been sad in his presence before. Therefore the king said to me, “Why is your face sad, since you are not sick? This is nothing but sorrow of heart.”

So I became dreadfully afraid, and said to the king, “May the king live forever! Why should my face not be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ tombs, lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire?”

Then the king said to me, “What do you request?”

So I prayed to the God of heaven. And I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, I ask that you send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers’ tombs, that I may rebuild it.”
Nehemiah 2:1-5 NKJV

I think Nehemiah’s prayer to the God of heaven was a quick thought prayer. It doesn’t seem appropriate to me for Nehemiah to have prayed out loud, standing beside the king.

There is also the story of Hannah, Samuel’s mother.

So Hannah arose after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of the tabernacle of the Lord. 10 And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the Lord and wept in anguish. 11 Then she made a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head.”

1 Samuel 1:9-17 NKJV

That passage is clear. Hannah spoke in her heart, but her voice was not heard.

God knows our thoughts.

The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord,
But the words of the pure are pleasant.
Proverbs 15:26 NKJV

But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts?
Matthew 9:4 NKJV

Perhaps this never bothered you, but it did me. You see, one of the people who told me that thoughts were not prayers was a pastor I had back in the 1990’s. In the end, it was a good experience. It taught me:

  • No one is right all the time. Not me, and not even a pastor.
  • I can study the Bible for myself.

I use thought prayers, prayers of the heart, to help implement these Scriptures.

Pray without ceasing.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 KJV

Pray in the Spirit at all times, with every kind of prayer and petition. To this end, stay alert with all perseverance in your prayers for all the saints.

The Heart – In God’s Image

God created mankind in His image.

26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

27 So God created mankind in his own image,
    in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.

28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earthand subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
Genesis 1:26-28 NIV

God has a heart.

Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.
Genesis 6:5-6 NKJV

20 Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. 21 And the Lord smelled a soothing aroma. Then the Lord said in His heart, “I will never again curse the ground for man’s sake, although the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done.
Genesis 8:20-21 NKJV

25 At that time Jesus answered and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thatYou have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes.26 Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. 27 All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. 28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Matthew 11:25-30 NKJV

Therefore I believe the heart of man is in the image of God’s heart.

The Heart – Introduction

Last November it occurred to me I would have a hard time explaining to someone the differences between soul, spirit, heart and mind. Especially the heart. Clearly it is distinct from the mind:

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Matthew 22:37 KJV

But it does have thoughts and intentions!

For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12 BSB

The heart is critical to eternal life.

For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Romans 10:10 NKJV

But it is also deceitful and wicked.

The heart is deceitful above all things,
And desperately wicked;
Who can know it?
10 I, the Lord, search the heart,
I test the mind,
Even to give every man according to his ways,
According to the fruit of his doings.
Jeremiah 17:9-10 NKJV

Guarding the heart is critical.

Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow springs of life.
Proverbs 4:23 BSB

I have many notes on the heart, and will be writing several posts on the topic. Stay tuned!

Has the rapture happened?
You can still be saved and go to heaven!
