Work in the Last Days

Before Adam sinned, God gave him things to do.

Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.
Genesis 2:15 NKJV

God has things for all of us to do. Here is a familiar verse, first complete, then with certain words removed.

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2:10 NKJV

… we are … created in Christ Jesus for good works…

… we are … created … for good works…

We Are Created For Good Works! We are all joints that supply to the building of Christ’s body.

11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.
Ephesians 4:11-16 NKJV

We are to work heartily, because we are working for Jesus.

23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.
Colossians 3:23-24 NKJV

That’s why sloth is one of the seven deadly sins. We are not doing what we are supposed to be doing.

He also who is slack in his work
Is brother to him who destroys.
Proverbs 18:9 NASB

But we are not to overdo.

Unless the Lord builds the house,
They labor in vain who build it;
Unless the Lord guards the city,
The watchman stays awake in vain.
It is vain for you to rise up early,
To sit up late,
To eat the bread of sorrows;
For so He gives His beloved sleep.
Psalm 127:1-2 NKJV

The catalyst of this post is I got a reject letter for a computer job I applied for, and I wasn’t even interviewed. I was a Chief Technical Officer (CTO) for 11 years before I got fed up working in the Washington DC area and quit in 2011. I became a welder, but that’s really a young man’s job. I’d like to get back into software, but between age, a 9 year break, and being a former exec, it seems nothing’s opening up. So I’m encouraging myself in the Lord. 🙂

“Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. In this manner, therefore, pray:

Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
Matthew 6:8-13 NKJV

31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Matthew 6:31-34 NKJV

The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
Psalm 23:1-3 NKJV

The truth be told, I hope God has something different of more eternal significance for me to do now. Jesus is coming soon, and I’d like to help get as many people into heaven as I can. It would rub my fur the wrong way to, say, write enhanced-user-experience web software if that means further erosion of privacy. Which it does, no doubt. May I enjoy what God has for me!

and also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor—it is the gift of God.
Ecclesiastes 3:13 NKJV

As for every man to whom God has given riches and wealth, and given him power to eat of it, to receive his heritage and rejoice in his labor—this is the gift of God.
Ecclesiastes 5:19 NKJV

Jesus is coming soon. Be ready!

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.
1 Thessalonians 5:4-6 NKJV

32 “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors! 34 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”
Matthew 24:32-35 NKJV

34 But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. 35 For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.

Moses’ Short Prayer

When I was a young Christian I attended a church that emphasized pray the solution. That is, don’t spend much (or any) time telling God the situation, but concentrate your prayer on how you want things to turn out. There is Scripture to support this idea.

Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
Mark 11:24 KJV

7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.
John 15:7-8 NKJV

So that’s the primary way I have prayed all these years – I have prayed the solution. But lately I’ve been wondering if I’m missing some richness and intimacy in prayer by not, well, complaining to God. It has not been my practice to tell God how things appear from my point of view, and that may be a hinderance to deeper intimacy with God in prayer.

Trust in Him at all times, you people;
Pour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us. Selah
Psalm 62:8 NKJV

“Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the night watches! Pour out your heart like water before the presence of the Lord! Lift your hands to him for the lives of your children, who faint for hunger at the head of every street.”
Lamentations 2:19 ESV

Therefore I am keeping my eyes open for example prayers in my Bible reading, with the idea of improving my own prayer life. Note what Moses says in this short prayer. This has not been my style.

22 So Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Lord, why have You brought trouble on this people? Why is it You have sent me? 23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has done evil to this people; neither have You delivered Your people at all.”
Exodus 5:22-23 NKJV

When I understand more, I’ll be glad to share. 🙂

Psalms 119:133 – Overcoming Bad Habits

This verse jumped out to me in my Bible study last night.

Establish my footsteps in Your word,
And do not let any iniquity have dominion over me.
Psalms 119:133 NASB

The thought was I could substitute whatever bad habit I’m trying to overcome in the place of ‘any iniquity‘. For example,

Establish my footsteps in Your word,
And do not let nicotine have dominion over me.

or

Establish my footsteps in Your word,
And do not let lustful thoughts have dominion over me.

I believe this is a practical way to work with the Holy Spirit.

12 So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh—13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”
Romans 8:12-15 NASB

(I like the present tense in verse 13. It is ‘… are putting to death …’ not ‘… have put to death …’ Becoming wholly holy is a process I won’t complete in this mortal, sinful flesh.)

13 For if you live according to [the dictates of] the flesh, you will surely die. But if through the power of the [Holy] Spirit you are [habitually] putting to death (making extinct, deadening) the [evil] deeds prompted by the body, you shall [really and genuinely] live forever.
Romans 8:13 AMPC

13 for if you are living according to the [impulses of the] flesh, you are going to die. But if [you are living] by the [power of the Holy] Spirit you are habitually putting to death the sinful deeds of the body, you will [really] live forever.
Romans 8:13 AMP

I don’t think my fleshly efforts to get more holy do any good.

Each of us has become like something unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all wither like a leaf, and our iniquities carry us away like the wind.
Isaiah 64:6 BSB

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.
John 15:5 NKJV

Jesus is the One who cleans us up.

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.
Ephesians 5:25-27 NKJV

30 But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption— 31 that, as it is written, “He who glories, let him glory in the Lord.”
1 Corinthians 1:30-31 NKJV

Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth.

To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
Revelation 1:4b-6 NKJV

The following is a merge of the instructions for using Scripture Keys for Kingdom Living found on their home page, combined with the helpful information found on page 9 of the printed book, and my own experience.

Four times per day, say the scriptures three times each:

  • First, thank God. I say before each passage, “Thank you Father, Your word says,” then I speak the verse or verses.
  • Second, I tell the devil, “It is written,” then I speak the passage.
  • Third, I speak to myself by saying, “I believe,” then speaking the verse or verses.

God’s Word Works!

Then the LORD said to me, “You have seen well, for I am watching over my word to perform it.
Jeremiah 1:12 ESV

“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven
and do not return there but water the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
Isaiah 55:10-11 ESV

Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.

Joseph’s Story Bothers Me

Some parts of the Bible are prescriptive. They prescribe what we should do. When Jesus gave us the golden rule it wasn’t a suggestion, it was a command to do to other people as we would have done to us. Other parts of the Bible are descriptive. They record what happened, but it is error to think we should do the same. Genesis 38 is the story of Judah getting his daughter-in-law pregnant, but that doesn’t mean I should do the same thing.

I finished reading again the story of Joseph in Genesis 37 – 50 and some things Joseph did trouble me. I am trying to understand which parts of Joseph’s life are prescriptive and which are descriptive. That is, if God should promote me to a position of authority, how much of Joseph’s life should I emulate? Here are some things that bother me.

  • After becoming Egypt’s prime minister, the #2 in the country, Joseph didn’t contact his family. He waited at least 7 years for them to come to him. Why didn’t he get word to his dad that he was alive and well?
  • When Joseph gave Pharaoh his recommendation to prepare for the coming famine, he could have suggested having the people prepare. Instead, he recommended Pharaoh increase his power and control.

33 “Now therefore, let Pharaoh select a discerning and wise man, and set him over the land of Egypt. 34 Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint officers over the land, to collect one-fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt in the seven plentiful years. 35 And let them gather all the food of those good years that are coming, and store up grain under the authority of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities. 36 Then that food shall be as a reserve for the land for the seven years of famine which shall be in the land of Egypt, that the land may not perish during the famine.”
Genesis 41:33-36 NKJV

The result was the slavery of the common Egyptian people, and he moved them into cities eerily like the Agenda 2030 sustainable cities. He also cemented the power of the false-religion priesthood.

20 Then Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for every man of the Egyptians sold his field, because the famine was severe upon them. So the land became Pharaoh’s. 21 And as for the people, he moved them into the cities, from one end of the borders of Egypt to the other end. 22 Only the land of the priests he did not buy; for the priests had rations allotted to them by Pharaoh, and they ate their rations which Pharaoh gave them; therefore they did not sell their lands.
Genesis 47:20-22 NKJV

Had Joseph instead preserved the freedom of the common Egyptian people, would Israel have become slaves in Egypt? I think not. While I may be wrong, I think Joseph sowed the seeds of the slavery of his own people!

  • Joseph “played God” to find out what was in his brother’s hearts. I heard a sermon many years ago that God wanted Joseph to do that. Sorry, I no longer agree with that view. For just one example, I don’t think a believer should claim knowledge and experience in demonic power as Joseph did.

14 So Judah and his brothers came to Joseph’s house, and he was still there; and they fell before him on the ground. 15 And Joseph said to them, “What deed is this you have done? Did you not know that such a man as I can certainly practice divination?
Genesis 44:14-15 NKJV

Clearly, his brothers stayed in fear of Joseph, and Joseph’s own father Jacob believed Joseph might take revenge on his brothers after he died. I get the impression no one’s warm-fuzzy meter read very high around Joseph. No one felt comfortable with what he might eventually do.

15 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “Perhaps Joseph will hate us, and may actually repay us for all the evil which we did to him.16 So they sent messengers to Joseph, saying, “Before your father died he commanded, saying, 17 ‘Thus you shall say to Joseph: “I beg you, please forgive the trespass of your brothers and their sin; for they did evil to you.” ’ Now, please, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of your father.” And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.

18 Then his brothers also went and fell down before his face, and they said, “Behold, we are your servants.”

19 Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God? 20 But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive. 21 Now therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones.” And he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.
Genesis 50:15-21 NKJV

(In verse 19, when Joseph said, “Am I in the place of God?”, I bet every brother except perhaps Benjamin thought, “Yes, you certainly acted like you were God over us!“)

Overall, Joseph’s life was successful and blessed. God definitely used him! Who else has ever saved the world from starvation? Psalms records a wonderful summary of his life.

16 Moreover He called for a famine in the land;
He destroyed all the provision of bread.
17 He sent a man before them—
Joseph—who was sold as a slave.
18 They hurt his feet with fetters,
He was laid in irons.
19 Until the time that his word came to pass,
The word of the Lord tested him.
20 The king sent and released him,
The ruler of the people let him go free.
21 He made him lord of his house,
And ruler of all his possessions,
22 To bind his princes at his pleasure,
And teach his elders wisdom.
Psalm 105:16-22 NKJV

But how much of Joseph’s pattern should I follow if given the opportunity? Should I make the rich and powerful more rich and powerful, or try to keep “the little people” free? If family wrongs me big time, do I “play God” to find out what’s in their hearts or just forgive and leave it up to God?

Thoughts?

Coronavirus Protection

Stand on God’s promises in Psalms 91!

Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler
And from the perilous pestilence.

Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place,
10 No evil shall befall you,
Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;
Psalm 91:3, 9-10 NKJV

Jesus said there will be pestilences in the last days. I see the Coronavirus as one of them.

And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.
Matthew 24:4-8 NKJV

Meditate on this passage to understand how bad things can get, and how much we need God’s protection.

A thousand may fall at your side,
And ten thousand at your right hand;
But it shall not come near you.
Only with your eyes shall you look,
And see the reward of the wicked.
Psalm 91:7-8 NKJV

I recommend everyone both read and pray Psalms 91 every day. This post has a prophetic word on why both reading and speaking are important.

Luke 21:34-36 NKJV

On Position and Promotion

I’m reminding myself that God is in charge of my position in life and who and what I influence. 🙂

For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south.
But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.
Psalm 75:6-7 KJV

He raises the poor out of the dust,
And lifts the needy out of the ash heap,
That He may seat him with princes—
With the princes of His people.
He grants the barren woman a home,
Like a joyful mother of children.
Praise the Lord!
Psalm 113:7-9 NKJV

20 Daniel answered and said:

“Blessed be the name of God forever and ever,
For wisdom and might are His.
21 And He changes the times and the seasons;
He removes kings and raises up kings;
He gives wisdom to the wise
And knowledge to those who have understanding.
22 He reveals deep and secret things;
He knows what is in the darkness,
And light dwells with Him.
Daniel 2:20-22 NKJV

They shall drive you from men, your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make you eat grass like oxen. They shall wet you with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over you, till you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses.
Daniel 4:25 NKJV

Joseph went from prison to prime minister in a day!

39 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Inasmuch as God has shown you all this, there is no one as discerning and wise as you. 40 You shall be over my house, and all my people shall be ruled according to your word; only in regard to the throne will I be greater than you.” 41 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.

42 Then Pharaoh took his signet ring off his hand and put it on Joseph’s hand; and he clothed him in garments of fine linen and put a gold chain around his neck. 43 And he had him ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried out before him, “Bow the knee!” So he set him over all the land of Egypt.
Genesis 41:39-43 NKJV

Position – your calling – is a matter of the heart.

A man’s heart plans his way,
But the LORD directs his steps.
Proverbs 16:9 NKJV

The preparations of the heart belong to man,
But the answer of the tongue is from the LORD.
Proverbs 16:1 NKJV

There are many plans in a man’s heart,
Nevertheless the LORD’s counsel—that will stand.
Proverbs 19:21 NKJV

The Lord is in charge of bringing it to pass.

For it is God who works in you to will and to act on behalf of His good purpose.
Philippians 2:13 BSB

23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord,
And He delights in his way.
24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down;
For the Lord upholds him with His hand.
Psalm 37:23-24 NKJV

O LORD, I know the way of man is not in himself;
It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps.
Jeremiah 10:23 NKJV

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.
Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV

I scarcely dare to think about it, but ultimate promotion is coming!

15 “And so it was that when he returned, having received the kingdom, he then commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading. 16 Then came the first, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned ten minas.’ 17 And he said to him, Well done, good servant; because you were faithful in a very little, have authority over ten cities. 18 And the second came, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned five minas.’ 19 Likewise he said to him, ‘You also be over five cities.
Luke 19:15-19 NKJV

22 But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. 24 And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it.
Revelation 21:22-24 NKJV

Communicate With Friends and Relatives

This is one of the saddest verses in the Bible.

Look to the right hand and see,
And no one is concerned for me;
No refuge remains to me;
No one inquires after my being.
Tehillim (Psalms) 142:4 TS2009

Look to the right and see;
For there is no one who regards me;
There is no escape for me;
No one cares for my soul.
Psalm 142:4 NASB

Communication is a blessing.

Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down,
but a good word makes him glad.
Proverbs 12:25 ESV

The light of the eyes cheers the heart,
and good news nourishes the bones.
Proverbs 15:30 BSB

As cold water to a weary soul,
So is good news from a far country.
Proverbs 25:25 NKJV

Stay in contact with people you know you should. I text a photo and/or part of Mike Murdock’s daily devotional to about 20 people every day. I suppose I “should” do more, but at least that’s a start. 🙂 This was today’s devotional.

Choose A Proven Mentor.

    Those you admire, eternally effect your future. Choose a mentor who increases your faith in God. Learn from the scars of your mentor as well as his sermons. You cannot learn from anyone you resent or envy. You can only learn from someone you are humble enough to admire.

Scripture Reference

Luke 14:28 “For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?”

And this was today’s photo.

I’m wondering if I need to add more people, or contact them other ways…. Thank you Father for Your wisdom!
