Some Lightning Photos With Quotes

My “theological” post ran out of steam so here are some lightning photos. 🙂

The first time I tried to take lightning photos I had beginner’s luck. It took several nights before I knew how to take photos like these again.

When there are lights on which to focus I can use any lens, and I put the camera on a tripod to hold it steady.

But when it is so dark that you can’t see your hand in front of your face and no distant lights show up, as is often the case during a storm between lightning flashes, there is one lens I use. I can focus it in the dark.

There is one set of quoted lightning photos whose colors seem a bit off.

That is because the originals were super-duper bright, brighter than day!

  • As shot – very bright!

This is the resulting photo, made as dark as possible.

  • Exposure completely reduced. The bolt on the right was apparently quite close. 🙂

I Am Still a “Luther-an”

I got saved when I was 20 and started reading the Bible seriously, and I was suddenly glad I had been dragged to Lutheran churches all my growing up years. I realized the songs and liturgy that seemed boring and unnecessary were in fact based on Scripture. I had been given a great running start on living the Christian life. For example, this chorus was often sung, and it comes straight out of Psalms 51!

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God;
and renew a right spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from thy presence;
and take not thy holy spirit from me.
12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation;
and uphold me with thy free spirit.
Psalms 51:10-12 KJV

Though I don’t identify with any particular denomination, Martin Luther is one of my “Heroes of the Faith.” Based on things I learned from sermons, books, and movies, there are three aspects of his life I especially try to follow. First, he would write just as long a letter to a barber as a pastor answering a theological question. Luther was not a respecter of persons. Second, he studied the Bible at many “levels.” I also benefit from reading whole books of the Bible at one sitting, as well as spending much time on a single verse, both digging into meanings of the words and analyzing cross references.

But the biggest thing I admire about Luther is that throughout his life he changed his doctrine based on his understanding of the Bible. I try to do the same thing. My doctrine has changed much these past 40 years as I have learned more about God and the Bible.

So in these three ways I am still a Luther-an. He is one of many people I am looking forward to meeting soon. 🙂

*REST* In The Lord

I prayed today, “What do You want me to do?” I was thinking at the physical, the Should-I-go-shopping-or-do-laundry-today level. Immediately the first part of Psalms 37:7 came to mind, with a huge emphasis on the word Rest.

Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him;
Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,
Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.
Psalms 37:7 NKJV

In my heart the answer to my prayer was at a very high level. “REST in Me. I AM just about to act and things will change!” Other parts of Psalms 37 describe what God will do very, very soon.

1 Do not fret because of evildoers,
Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity.
2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass,
And wither as the green herb.

9 For evildoers shall be cut off;
But those who wait on the Lord,
They shall inherit the earth.
10 For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more;
Indeed, you will look carefully for his place,
But it shall be no more.
11 But the meek shall inherit the earth,
And shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

12 The wicked plots against the just,
And gnashes at him with his teeth.

Very soon the distinction between the righteous and wicked will be obvious to everyone.

Both Jesus And The Holy Spirit Are Praying For Us!

Sometimes I read through my old blog posts and one of them will impact me. This post is based on one I wrote back in March 2018, and is well worth saying again. At least, I am blessed by the meditative process of updating it. 🙂 I hope you are too!

If you belong to God, the Holy Spirit prays for you.

26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
