I heard yet another YouTube video where the speaker was teaching this is singular, that it applies to individuals.
26 These things I have written to you concerning those who try to deceive you. 27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.
1 John 2:26-27 NKJV
That is, all you need is the Holy Spirit to teach you. I agree the Holy Spirit is our teacher.
“However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come.”
John 16:13 BSB
But there are all these Scriptures too.
11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.
Ephesians 4:11-16 NKJV
27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. 28 And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues.
1 Corinthians 12:27-28 NKJV
Now in the church that was at Antioch there were certain prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
Acts 13:1 NKJV
12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. 14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Hebrews 5:12-14 NKJV
Who was John writing to?
7 Brethren, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you heard from the beginning.
12 I write to you, little children,
Because your sins are forgiven you for His name’s sake.
13 I write to you, fathers,
Because you have known Him who is from the beginning.
I write to you, young men,
Because you have overcome the wicked one.
I write to you, little children,
Because you have known the Father.
1 John 2:7, 12-13 NKJV
So using this verse,
27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.
1 John 2:27 NKJV
… let’s plug in the people.
But the anointing which you – brethren, little children, fathers, young men – have received from Him abides in you – brethren, little children, fathers, young men -, and you – brethren, little children, fathers, young men – do not need that anyone teach you – brethren, little children, fathers, young men – ; but as the same anointing teaches you – brethren, little children, fathers, young men – concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you – brethren, little children, fathers, young men -, you – brethren, little children, fathers, young men – will abide in Him.
Or, as this might read in The Cotton Patch Bible,
But the anointing which y’all have received from Him abides in all of y’all, and y’all do not need that anyone teach y’all; but as the same anointing teaches y’all concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught y’all, y’all will abide in Him.
That is, I think this applies to a group of believers watching out for each other, not to individuals. Whenever I hear this verse taught, “You don’t listen to anyone but Jesus,” I get all uncomfortable on the inside. The Word says He uses people to teach His body! And Solomon wrote this about those who decide to go it alone.
He who isolates himself pursues selfish desires; he rebels against all sound judgment.
Proverbs 18:1 BSB
I’d like to smash some New Testament Scriptures together and ‘Southernify’ them to make my point.
“Don’t y’all forget to get together regular and praise the Lord, like some do to their hurt. But get together regular and there ain’t no call for anyone to teach y’all. Even iffn there’s just two Jesus is there too. And one of y’all will have a song, another a psalm, someone may prophesy, and there could be tongues and interpretin’ them. Then Brother Jim is gonna get up and teach y’all from the Bible for a spell. Inspire y’all to study so you’ll have something to say someday. Then Brother Ike, he’s gonna preach to y’all. He gonna get you all fired up to do sumthin’ with them Gospel shoes y’all s’post to have on. “
I know God Himself often teaches me individually, as sometimes the Bible “comes alive” when I read it. But I get really uncomfortable when someone teaches that is enough.
Thoughts?
Jesus is coming soon. Be ready to meet Him!
32 “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors! 34 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”
Matthew 24:32-35 NKJV
34 “But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. 35 For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”
Luke 21:34-36 NKJV
