The entrance of Your words gives light;
It gives understanding to the simple.
Psalms 119:130 NKJV

Sometimes I look through my old posts and see things I have gotten out of the habit of doing that I should be doing. So it is with my Bible Study Warm-Up posts of 2018 (NKJV, mostly) and 2019 (TS2009). These are Scriptures on which to pray and meditate before beginning Bible study. The TS2009 post has a few more Scriptures than the earlier NKJV post.

It is my plan to get back in the habit of reading and praying at least a couple of these Scriptures before beginning my Bible studies. 😊

There are four sections below.

  1. PDFs for printing or offline use.
  2. NKJV (mostly) with photos, because I like posting my photos. 😊
  3. NKJV
  4. TS2009

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

Update – Personalized Psalms 91 Prayer

In the more-than-a-month I have been praying Psalms 91 the prayer has become much more personal and I think, more effective. My name is Mark, and I confess it took a few days for me to feel completely comfortable praying like this.

14 Father יהוה says, “Because Mark cleaves to Me in love,
Therefore I deliver him;
I set Mark on high,
Because he has known My Name.
15 “When Mark calls on Me, I answer him;
I am with him in distress;
I deliver Mark and esteem him.
16 “With long life I satisfy Mark,
And show him My deliverance.”
In the Name of יהושע (Jesus) Messiah, Amen.
Personalized Prayer Based On Tehillim (Psalms) 91 TS2009

But after a few days I knew this is the sort of thing that makes God happy. 🙂

The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD,
But the prayer of the upright is His delight.
Proverbs 15:8 NKJV

Here is the updated prayer. I recommend you use your name and the appropriate him/her pronoun in the blanks.

1 By faith I say I dwell in the secret place of the Most High,
That I abide under the shadow of the Almighty,
2 So I am saying to and of You, Father יהוה,
“You are my refuge and my stronghold,
My Elohim, in whom I trust!”
3 For You, Father יהוה, deliver me from the snare of a trapper,
From the destructive pestilence.
4 You cover me with Your feathers,
And under Your wings I take refuge;
Your truth, Father יהוה, is my shield and armour.
5 I am not afraid of the dread by night,
Of the arrow that flies by day,
6 Of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
Of destruction that ravages at midday.
7 A thousand fall at my side,
And ten thousand at my right hand;
But it does not come near me.
8 Only with my eyes I look on,
And see the reward of the wrong ones.
9 Because I have made You, Abba, Father יהוה,
My dwelling place,
10 No evil befalls me,
And a plague does not come near my tent;
11 For You command Your messengers concerning me,
To guard me in all my ways.
12 They bear me up in their hands,
Lest I dash my foot against a stone.
13 I tread upon lion and cobra,
Young lion and serpent I trample under foot.
14 Father יהוה says, “Because ____ cleaves to Me in love,
Therefore I deliver ____;
I set ____ on high,
Because ____ has known My Name.
15 “When ____ calls on Me, I answer ____;
I am with ____ in distress;
I deliver ____ and esteem ____.
16 “With long life I satisfy ____,
And show ____ My deliverance.”
In the Name of יהושע (Jesus) Messiah, Amen.
Personalized Prayer Based On Tehillim (Psalms) 91 TS2009

Here is an image of the prayer I can use on my ancient iPad, which cannot display this web page correctly.

This is Psalms 91 in the TS2009 translation.

1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High,
Who abides under the shadow of the Almighty,
2 He is saying of יהוה, “My refuge and my stronghold,
My Elohim, in whom I trust!”
3 For He delivers you from the snare of a trapper,
From the destructive pestilence.
4 He covers you with His feathers,
And under His wings you take refuge;
His truth is a shield and armour.
5 You are not afraid of the dread by night,
Of the arrow that flies by day,
6 Of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
Of destruction that ravages at midday.
7 A thousand fall at your side,
And ten thousand at your right hand;
But it does not come near you.
8 Only with your eyes you look on,
And see the reward of the wrong ones.
9 Because you have made יהוה –
My refuge, the Most High – your dwelling place,
10 No evil befalls you,
And a plague does not come near your tent;
11 For He commands His messengers concerning you,
To guard you in all your ways.
12 They bear you up in their hands,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
13 You tread upon lion and cobra,
Young lion and serpent you trample under foot.
14 “Because he cleaves to Me in love,
Therefore I deliver him;
I set him on high,
Because he has known My Name.
15 “When he calls on Me, I answer him;

34 But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. 35 For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.
Luke 21:34-36 NKJV

Image – Personalized Prayer of Psalms 91

I have an ancient, well-used iPad which still works well for some things.

But its operating system is outdated, and cannot be updated. It doesn’t display my post Personalized Prayer of Psalms 91 properly, and there doesn’t seem to be anything I can do to fix it. So I made a screenshot image of the prayer and put it in my shared photo album Prayers. Now I can use this old iPad to pray my Psalms 91 personalized prayer. 🙂

Here is the image file you can download and use however you wish.

Jesus is coming soon. Be ready!

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.
1 Thessalonians 5:4-6 NKJV

32 “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors! 34 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”

Psalms In A Month Reading Plans

Here is a table / bookmark you can use to read through Psalms every month, reading about the same number of verses per day.

Here are charts of the number of verses per day.

Here is the chart of what “5 Chapters a Day, Psalms 119 On Its Own Day” looks like. There are light reading days and heavy reading days.

I used this Google Sheets spreadsheet. Feel free to grab a copy and make whatever changes you wish. I know I’m not overly-skillful selecting fonts and colors. 🙂

New! Improved! Romans Letter KJV Letter

I have never understood how something can be both new and improved, but I guess it is our American culture. 😉 So here is the New! Improved! Romans KJV Letter With Periodic Chapter:Verse References!

Please let me know of any mistakes and typos.

God reminded me there is an easy way I could put Chapter:Verse to the left of the text – margins and indents. Oh, duh! I would prefer a smaller font for the references, and to have the range of the references on the page in the header, but that needs an automated process to avoid both error and mind-numbing tedium. This version is fully usable. At least, I love it. 🙂

If you print on both sides of the paper, I recommend you use high quality paper so highlighters don’t show through to the other side. Here are pictures of the paper and highlighters I used on a prototype. There is no bleed through from one side of the paper to the other. The last photo is back lit to show the other side is indeed highlighted.

While you could just put the pages in a loose-leaf binder, I highly recommend that you take the time to make a booklet of some form. I have been making these types of Bible study helps since the 1980’s and I have used several ways of keeping pages together.

Loose-leaf binders have these drawbacks.

  1. The rings get in the way of writing.
  2. The holes wear out. Even with a 7-ring binder the page holes will wear out.
  3. If you drop the binder, it could spring open, and you could spend a long time getting all the pages back where they belong.
  4. Most important for me, there is some kind of psychological or spiritual difference between pages in a loose-leaf binder and a bound booklet. Loose-leaf has a “temporary, changeable” feeling. This is especially true for me if the ringed binder has many projects. But a bound booklet has a “realness, permanent” feeling for me. If I drop it, pages may get bent but it is not going to come apart. I can grab it and go sit in a comfortable chair to read and study. I can easily show it to someone else. For me, booklets are at least twice as effective as the same pages in a loose-leaf binder. It is subtle, but very, very real.

I went to the Dollar Store and got a hole punch and 3-Prong Binders. Woodworker tip: Clamp everything you can before a cutting operation to avoid spoiling the work. Note the paper clips.

For a better writing surface on the back of the first page, put some pages at the front. I used a piece of card stock and a scrap piece of paper. If I didn’t have the card stock handy I would have used three scrap pages.

Put in the Romans pages, and add extra pages at the end.

Next, bend the pages to prepare the booklet for use. I’m right handed so I start at the end and work towards the beginning. Use care to get the first fold right, especially if it is stiff card stock. Watch the top and bottom areas as you’re bending (arrows below). I could have done a little better on the bottom, but this small boo-boo is ok for this binder. I can still easily see all the Chapter:Verse references.

Fold each page over until you get to the first page. Then rotate the binder 180 degrees and repeat the folding process. Don’t be fooled by the right-side-up text on the scrap paper in the photo. From the pockets you can see it is upside down. Also note this is a good use of bent card stock that won’t go through a printer.

When you are done folding the pages, the booklet is ready for reading and study. Grab your highlighters, pens, and pencils, and have a blast studying Romans!

Oh, and don’t be surprised if you want to make another one someday, to get fresh, new insights. 🙂

Are you following God's plan for your life?

Bible Study Warm-Up — TS2009

This is an update of my post, Bible Study Warm-Up. I added a few more Scriptures, and all Scriptures are from The Scriptures, 2009 Edition. Here is the intro from my earlier post.

Last August I started making a list of Scriptures in my topical notebook that I thought would be good to read and pray before starting Bible Study. Here they are, plus some that came to mind while writing. I have decided not to highlight them, so that every time I read them I am more open to new understandings. I hope you find them a blessing!

Use this link to download the Scriptures, and then you can mark and highlight to your heart’s content. 🙂

P.S. February 19, 2019. Acrobat Reader DC on my iMac can print the four pages of the download as a “Booklet” on one piece of paper. I love it!

Open my eyes, that I might see
Wonders from Your Torah.
Tehillim (Psalms) 119:18 TS2009

And He said to them, “O thoughtless ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary for the Messiah to suffer these and to enter into His esteem?” And beginning at Mosheh and all the Prophets, He was explaining to them in all the Scriptures the matters concerning Himself.
Luqas (Luke) 24:25-27 TS2009

And they said to each other, “Was not our heart burning within us as He was speaking to us on the way, and as He was opening the Scriptures to us?”
Luqas (Luke) 24:32 TS2009

Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,
Luqas (Luke) 24:45 TS2009

“You are already clean because of the Word which I have spoken to you.”
Yoḥanan (John) 15:3 TS2009

He who formed the eye, does He not see?
He who disciplines the nations,
Does He not reprove –
The One teaching man knowledge?
Tehillim (Psalms) 94:9-10 TS2009

The Torah of יהוה is perfect, bringing back the being;
The witness of יהוה is trustworthy, making wise the simple;
The orders of יהוה are straight, rejoicing the heart;
The command of יהוה is clear, enlightening the eyes;
The fear of יהוה is clean, standing forever;
The right-rulings of יהוה are true,
They are righteous altogether,
More desirable than gold,
Than much fine gold;
And sweeter than honey and the honeycomb.
Also, Your servant is warned by them,
In guarding them there is great reward.
Tehillim (Psalms) 19:7-11 TS2009

To my heart You have said,
“Seek My face.”
Your face, יהוה, I seek.
Tehillim (Psalms) 27:8 TS2009

Thus said יהוה, “The heavens are My throne, and the earth is My footstool. Where is this house that you build for Me? And where is this place of My rest? And all these My hand has made, and all these that exist,” declares יהוה. “Yet to such a one I look: on him who is poor and bruised of spirit, and who trembles at My Word.”
Yeshayah (Isaiah) 66:1-2 TS2009

Whenever I said, “Let me not mention Him, nor speak in His Name again,” it was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones. And I became weary of holding it back, and was helpless.
Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 20:9 TS2009

“I have not strayed from the command of His lips. I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my own law.”
Iyoḇ (Job) 23:12 TS2009

“Ask and it shall be given to you, seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it shall be opened.”
Mattithyahu (Matthew) 7:7-8 TS2009

“If you stay in Me, and My Words stay in you, you shall ask whatever you wish, and it shall be done for you. In this My Father is esteemed, that you bear much fruit, and you shall be My taught ones.”
Yoḥanan (John) 15:7-8 TS2009

The hearing ear and the seeing eye,
יהוה has made both of them.
Mishlĕ (Proverbs) 20:12 TS2009

“Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has given understanding to the heart?”
Iyoḇ (Job) 38:36 TS2009

And יהוה came and stood and called as at other times, “Shemu’ĕl! Shemu’ĕl!” And Shemu’ĕl answered, “Speak, for Your servant hears.”
Shemu’ĕl Aleph (1 Samuel) 3:10 TS2009

All Scripture is breathed out by Elohim and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for setting straight, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of Elohim might be fitted, equipped for every good work.
Timotiyos Bĕt (2 Timothy) 3:16-17 TS2009

But to this day, when Mosheh is being read, a veil lies on their heart. And when one turns to the Master, the veil is taken away. Now יהוה is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of יהוה is, there is freedom.
Qorintiyim Bĕt (2 Corinthians) 3:15-17 TS2009

As for these four young men, Elohim gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom. And Dani’ĕl had understanding in all visions and dreams.
Dani’ĕl (Daniel) 1:17 TS2009

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine, and does them, shall be like a wise man who built his house on the rock, and the rain came down, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.”
Mattithyahu (Matthew) 7:24-25 TS2009

And become doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. Because if anyone is a hearer of the Word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror, for he looks at himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what he was like. But he that looked into the perfect Torah, that of freedom, and continues in it, not becoming a hearer that forgets, but a doer of work, this one shall be blessed in his doing of the Torah.
Ya‛aqoḇ (James) 1:22-25 TS2009

My son, if you accept my words,
And treasure up my commands with you,
So that you make your ear attend to wisdom,
Incline your heart to understanding;
For if you cry for discernment,
Lift up your voice for understanding,
If you seek her as silver,
And search for her as hidden treasures,
Then you would understand the fear of יהוה,
And find the knowledge of Elohim.
For יהוה gives wisdom;
Out of His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
And He treasures up stability for the straight,
A shield to those walking blamelessly,
To watch over the paths of right-ruling,
And the way of His lovingly-commited ones He guards.
Then you would understand righteousness
And right-ruling, and straightness –
Every good path.
Mishlĕ (Proverbs) 2:1-9 TS2009

Bible Study Warm-Up

Last August I started making a list of Scriptures in my topical notebook that I thought would be good to read and pray before starting Bible Study. Here they are, plus some that came to mind while writing. I have decided not to highlight them, so that every time I read them I am more open to new understandings. I hope you find them a blessing!

P.S. December 7, 2018. Here is a PDF of the Scriptures below for ease of printing them.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 NKJV

The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul;
The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;
The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart;

If you seek her as silver,
And search for her as for hidden treasures;
Then you will understand the fear of the Lord,
And find the knowledge of God.
For the Lord gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding;
He stores up sound wisdom for the upright;
He is a shield to those who walk uprightly;
He guards the paths of justice,
And preserves the way of His saints.
Then you will understand righteousness and justice,
Equity and every good path.
