The Holy Spirit in the Book of Revelation

There is a special blessing for those who read, hear and obey the book of Revelation, so I have been reading at least a chapter a day nearly every day since April 1, 2021.

The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants—things which must shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John, who bore witness to the word of God, and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, to all things that he saw. Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near.
Revelation 1:1-3 NKJV

“Behold, I am coming quickly! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.
Revelation 22:7 NKJV

I am involved in a mens’ Bible study on the Trinity, so in my reading of Revelation I have been noticing the references to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These are the Scriptures in Revelation about the Holy Spirit. Please let me know if I missed any.

The Seven Spirits of God

The Holy Spirit is introduced as the seven Spirits before the Father’s throne.

John, to the seven churches which are in Asia:

Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth.

To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
Revelation 1:4-6 NKJV

Isaiah 11 sheds some light.

There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse,
And a Branch shall grow out of his roots.
The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him,
The Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
The Spirit of counsel and might,
The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.

His delight is in the fear of the Lord,
And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes,
Nor decide by the hearing of His ears;
But with righteousness He shall judge the poor,
And decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth,
And with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked.
Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins,
And faithfulness the belt of His waist.
Isaiah 11:1-5 NKJV

In the letters to the churches Jesus says He possesses the seven Spirits.

And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.
Revelation 3:1 KJV

The seven Spirits are equated with seven lamps of fire in the throne room scene of Revelation 4.

Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald. Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white robes; and they had crowns of gold on their heads. And from the throne proceeded lightnings, thunderings, and voices. Seven lamps of fire were burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.
Revelation 4:2-5 NKJV

The seven horns and seven eyes of the Lamb are the seven Spirits of God.

And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth.
Revelation 5:6 NKJV

The Spirit

Jesus dictates the letters to the church to John, but Jesus says the Spirit is the one speaking.

2:7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.

29 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

3:6 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

13 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

22 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 29, 3:6, 13, 22 KJV

There are two other Scriptures containing the Spirit.

Then I heard a voice from heaven saying to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’ ”

“Yes,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them.”
Revelation 14:13 NKJV

And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.
Revelation 22:17 NKJV

In The Spirit

John makes several references to being in the Spirit.

I, John, both your brother and companion in the tribulation and kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was on the island that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. 10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet, 11 saying, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last,” and, “What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia: to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.”
Revelation 1:9-11 NKJV

Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne.
Revelation 4:2 NKJV

Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and talked with me, saying to me, “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters, with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication.”

So he carried me away in the Spirit into the wilderness. And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast which was full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
Revelation 17:1-3 NKJV

Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues came to me and talked with me, saying, “Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife.” 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, 11 having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal.
Revelation 21:9-11 NKJV

My Insights and Comments

This section is under construction. 😉

Jesus is coming very soon. Be ready!

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.
1 Thessalonians 5:4-6 NKJV

32 “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors! 34 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”
Matthew 24:32-35 NKJV

34 But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. 35 For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.
Luke 21:34-36 NKJV

Has the rapture happened?
You can still be saved and go to heaven!

Are you following God's plan for your life?
   You should.

The Seven Spirits of God

In Revelation, I believe it is the Holy Spirit who is introduced as the seven Spirits of God.

John, to the seven churches which are in Asia:

Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth.
Revelation 1:4-5 NKJV

This usage continues in the book of Revelation.

“And to the angel of the church in Sardis write,

‘These things says He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: “I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead.” ’ ”
Revelation 3:1 NKJV

However, the Spirit is also specifically mentioned in Revelation.

17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 29, 3:6, 13, 22, 22:17 KJV

But what are the seven Spirits of God? I’ve known for a long time the six listed in Isaiah, in one of the many prophecies about Jesus’ first coming:

  1. Wisdom
  2. Understanding
  3. Counsel
  4. Might
  5. Knowledge
  6. Fear of the Lord

His delight is in the fear of the Lord,
And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes,
Nor decide by the hearing of His ears;
But with righteousness He shall judge the poor,
And decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth,
And with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked.
Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins,
And faithfulness the belt of His waist.
Isaiah 11:1-5 NKJV

A couple weeks ago this verse jumped out.

And I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “See that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
Revelation 19:10 NKJV

Is this then the list of the seven Spirits of God?

  1. Wisdom
  2. Understanding
  3. Counsel
  4. Might
  5. Knowledge
  6. Fear of the Lord
  7. Prophecy (??)

Another possibility is from Jesus’ last talk with His disciples before he was betrayed.

12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.
John 16:12-15 NKJV

Is this the list?

  1. Wisdom
  2. Understanding
  3. Counsel
  4. Might
  5. Knowledge
  6. Fear of the Lord
  7. Truth (??)

Understanding the ministry of the Holy Spirit and His identity are some of the things I look for as I study my Bible. More to go… 🙂

John 14-16 – The Holy Spirit

I am wanting to learn more about the Holy Spirit and His ministry, and a great place to start is Jesus’ last conversation with His disciples before He was betrayed, recorded in John 14-16. This is the first mention.

15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.
John 14:15-18 NKJV

The Greek word translated Helper in the NKJV is Strong’s G3875 – paraklétos. I recommend you read the link yourself, especially Thayer’s Greek Lexicon. If you look at John 14:16 at BibleHub and BibleGateway you will see that paraklétos has many English translations. Here is the Amplified Classic translation of the passage.

15 If you [really] love Me, you will keep (obey) My commands.

16 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby), that He may remain with you forever—

17 The Spirit of Truth, Whom the world cannot receive (welcome, take to its heart), because it does not see Him or know and recognize Him. But you know and recognize Him, for He lives with you [constantly] and will be in you.

18 I will not leave you as orphans [comfortless, desolate, bereaved, forlorn, helpless]; I will come [back] to you.
John 14:15-18 NKJV

I find verse 18 very interesting. It seems to say that Jesus is the Holy Spirit.

I will not leave you as orphans [comfortless, desolate, bereaved, forlorn, helpless]; I will come [back] to you.
John 14:18 AMPC

I don’t pretend to understand this yet, but it does correlate with this verse from Revelation.

And to the angel (messenger) of the assembly (church) in Sardis write: These are the words of Him Who has the seven Spirits of God [the sevenfold Holy Spirit] and the seven stars: I know your record and what you are doing; you are supposed to be alive, but [in reality] you are dead.
Revelation 3:1 NKJV

Continuing in John, the Holy Spirit is my teacher, and He brings to my mind specific Scriptures I need when I need them.

25 “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
John 14:25-27 NKJV

The Holy Spirit testifies of Jesus.

26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.
John 15:26-27 NKJV

… which bring to mind this verse.

And I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “See that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
Revelation 19:10 NKJV

There is much I don’t understand in this last passage about the Holy Spirit in John 14-16, such as why Jesus had to leave in order for the Holy Spirit to come. But I do understand that the Holy Spirit guides me into all truth, and He shows me future things.

“But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

John 16:5-15 NKJV

Paul gives more information about the Holy Spirit revealing things to come.

But as it is written:

“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.
1 Corinthians 2:9-12 NKJV

I don’t have much else to write now as I wrote this to help me study. But while writing, it occurred to me the Holy Spirit will definitely help me put this verse into practice!

Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
Colossians 3:2 NKJV

Jesus is coming soon. Be ready!

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.
