Proverbs 10:17 Unleashed

The unfolding of your words gives light;
it imparts understanding to the simple.
Psalm 119:130 ESV

Can you complete Proverbs 10:17 in these six translations? The answers are below the sunrise pictures. Think a bit before scrolling… 😊

NASB

Hebrew Understanding Two

NIV

Both Understandings

He who learns from instruction and correction is on the [right] path of life [and for others his example is a path toward wisdom and blessing],
But he who ignores and refuses correction goes off course [and for others his example is a path toward sin and ruin].
AMP

He who heeds instruction and correction is [not only himself] in the way of life [but also] is a way of life for others. And he who neglects or refuses reproof [not only himself] goes astray [but also] causes to err and is a path toward ruin for others.
AMPC

For me, the first Hebrew understanding is “expected.” The Bible has much to say about putting the Word in practice.

He who keeps instruction is in the way of life,
But he who refuses correction goes astray.
Proverbs 10:17 NKJV

24 Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
Matthew 7:24-27 ESV

22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
James 1:22-25 ESV

The second Hebrew understanding is still “startling” to me. My disobedient self-deception leads others astray? Wow!

Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life,
but he who rejects reproof leads others astray.
Proverbs 10:17 ESV

Since I don’t read Hebrew and Greek I am glad I can use many good modern translations to understand God’s Word better. It’s almost hard for me to believe that I once though-eth this-eth is-eth the only-eth Bible I should read:

He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth.
Proverbs 10:17 KJV

(I have nothing against the KJV. It is a fine translation. But the English language has changed a lot since 1611. Modern translations use words more understandable to modern English readers.)

If you haven’t done so, I recommend you look at these translations of Proverbs 10:17. Hebrew experts have brought out many shades of meaning in their various translations.

Using multiple translations is one way to be a Berean. 😊

Now the Bereans were more noble-minded than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if these teachings were true.
Acts 17:11 BSB

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a worker who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:15 NASB

Jesus is coming very, very soon. Be ready!

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.
1 Thessalonians 5:4-6 NKJV

32 “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors! 34 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”
Matthew 24:32-35 NKJV

34 But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. 35 For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.
Luke 21:34-36 NKJV

I Changed My Mind and Bought an ESV Bible

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Romans 8:1 ESV

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
Romans 8:1 NKJV

Back in June 2020 I wrote the post Why I Decided Not To Buy An ESV Bible. The gist of the post was I didn’t think that the Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek texts used for the ESV were accurate. An example is shown above, Romans 8:1 in both the ESV and NKJV. They use different Greek texts.

I watched many of Mark Ward’s videos, including the 7-video series, “The Textual Confidence Collective.” I realized I simply do not have the training to make Bible manuscript decisions. I have to trust the work of others, and ultimately trust God.

Mark Ward – The TCC Series

I read from the ESV a while on my iPhone and iPad and decided it did help me understand the Bible better. So I bought a copy that doesn’t need recharging. It didn’t hurt that it was on sale. 😉

I don’t expect to read it cover-to-cover before the rapture, but it should be precious to someone left behind. I put a copy of my Left-Behind Letter in it.

IMO Mark Ward has much wisdom about Bible translations. For more about him and his ministry please see this post:

IMO “KJV-Only” Should Be Dead — Mark Ward Video

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.
John 6:63 NKJV

My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.
John 10:27 NKJV

12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
John 16:12-13 NKJV

And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.
Luke 24:45 NKJV

Much more effort and meditation went into this article than is apparent from my few words. As a young Christian I became KJV-Only because a pastor told me the Textus Receptus (TR) was the only reliable manuscript, and the KJV had used the TR for its translation.

In time I rejected KJV-Only and now use many English translations. Yet the controversy continues, in my view damaging the Christian witness to unbelievers. One can find many videos like this on YouTube. (No, I am not including the link to the video.)

Mark Ward Video

In my view if there is just one error in the TR then the whole KJV-Only position should be discarded. This video discusses one such possible error, and it well illustrates why I gave up trying to evaluate the Bible’s underlying manuscripts – I just don’t have the time, training and resources required for such textual criticism. I have to trust that God is able to get me the Bibles He wants me to use.

(The video is just a few hours old, yet it has many sharp comments. 😟 😢 )

Mark Ward – Recent Twitter Controversies and Eph 3:9

I am glad to use any English translation I believe God is ok with. The English language has changed much in 400 years, and the KJV is full of words whose meaning has changed – words I don’t know that I don’t know. I misunderstood parts of the KJV through no fault of my own, and no fault of the KJV translators. Using modern translations helps me understand.

Mark Ward – A Refreshing Voice in the KJV-Only Debate

Mark Ward has both a Ph.D. in New Testament Interpretation and a passion to free people from the error of KJV-Only. He believes people should use Bible translations written in their own language. Spoken and written English was very different in the 1600’s, and for many people the changes get in the way of understanding God’s Word. As a former KVJ-Only person I really appreciate the breadth and depth of his research, as well as his engaging and often humorous presentations.

He has many videos on False Friends, which are words that you don’t know that you don’t know. For example, consider the word Study in 2 Timothy 2:15.

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:15 KJV

Study in this context does not mean what it did in 1611. It has nothing to do with “hitting the books.” This is what it might as well say.

Grunlice to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

As these modern translations show, in 1611 Study in this context had the meaning of working hard, of being diligent.

Here is Mark Ward’s video on this false friend.

50 False Friends in the KJV #46: “STUDY”—THE MOST IRONIC FALSE FRIEND

I’m out of time so this post will have a sequel. Is anyone curious why a former KJV-Only person would watch hours of Mark’s videos? There are reasons. 🙂 Plus there are KJV-Only issues I have that he has not covered AFAIK.

(Isaiah 45:11 KJV messed me up for a while.)

KJV Verses I Misunderstood

Although I am a former KJV-Only person, I am not “bashing” the KJV in this post. I think it was a fine translation in its time, and I still sometimes use it. But the notion that the KJV is a ‘perfect’ translation is incorrect. For example, the phrase Men’s hearts failing them for fear from Luke 21:26 is not supported by the Greek text. I discuss a possible reason for this choice of words in this post: Idiom? “Men’s Hearts Failing Them”

Another puzzling word choice in the KJV is “reins” in Revelation 2:23.

And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.
Revelation 2:23 KJV

As you can see from the Greek, the word is νεφροὺς, Strong’s G3510, nephros: a kidney. Most translations (BibleHub, BibleGateway) use the word mind, but a few use kidneys.

“And I shall slay her children with death. And all the assemblies shall know that I am the One searching the kidneys and hearts. And I shall give to each one of you according to your works.”
Ḥazon (Revelation) 2:23 TS2009

I’m sorry, but the KJV “I am he which searcheth the reigns” doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. However, I believe it is possible it might have made sense to someone in 1611. Language changes. Would someone from 1611 know what “selfie” or “WIFI” means? So likewise we alive now may not know what words meant in the 1600’s.

As I mentioned at the beginning, I am a former KJV-Only person. When I had been saved about 4 years I became good friends with a neighbor who was a Baptist pastor. We had many long, pleasant Bible discussions. Over time, he convinced me that the Textus Receptus was the only accurate manuscript, and therefore one should read only translations based on it. Since there is only one, the KJV, that means use the KJV only. And that’s how I became a KJV-Only person. I was a young Christian, and he was a Bible-college educated professional pastor.

I continued KJV-Only for about 6 years, until I heard a sermon by another pastor. (This pastor mainly used the KJV.) In the sermon he discussed known errors in the Textus Receptus. Part of the sermon went something like this:

“We know the name of the monk who made himself a note in the margin of the manuscript he was copying. Then copies were made of the monk’s manuscript, and no one realized they included the monk’s notes as text. Therefore we know this passage in the KJV shouldn’t be in the KJV. It is from notes a monk made.”

Wow! So now I knew the Textus Receptus wasn’t perfect, and I felt freed to use other translations. The TS2009 is my primary translation now, but I read many others, and often dive down into the Hebrew and Greek.

As I look back on my KJV-Only days, I can see that I misunderstood many Scriptures because of the archaic language from the 1600’s. Here is one example. I blush a bit, but I understood this verse to mean I could tell God what to do:

Thus saith the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me.
Isaiah 45:11 KJV

I now think this is a better translation.

This is what the LORD says— the Holy One of Israel and your Creator: “Do you question what I do for my children? Do you give me orders about the work of my hands?
Isaiah 45:11 NLT

I am very glad I was freed from my KJV-Only viewpoint, and can now use many translations and other resources to understand God’s Word!
