HalleluYah Scriptures Review

This is a review of my large print copy of the HalleluYah Scriptures (HYS), 6th Edition 2015, which I received on August 9, 2017.

My report of April 8, 2018 was generally positive. This review is generally negative. I hate to do it. I believe the HYS is a fine translation. But as an overall product it has significant shortcomings, and I don’t use it very much anymore. Had I known in August 2017 what I know now about the HYS, I probably would not have purchased it. Hence this review.

No Electronic Version

To the best of my knowledge, the HYS is not available in electronic form. This is its biggest shortcoming for me. Not only can I not copy/paste Scriptures from the HYS into my blog posts, I can’t read it unless I have the large book with me. I have two other restored-names Bibles, the Eth-CEPHER (CEPHER) and The Scriptures, 2009 Edition (TS2009). Both of these have electronic versions available, and they are installed on my iPhone and iPad. The text is downloaded into my iDevices, so they work in Airline Mode.

(While copy/paste is limited in both the CEPHER and the TS2009, it is acceptable for short quotations. I wish they were available on BibleGateway!)

I often use electronic editions of the Bible. The fact that I cannot access the HYS in electronic form is a big bummer.

Poor Paper Quality

I often use these printed Bibles.

Of these five, the paper of the HYS is noticeably less opaque than the others. I have some difficulty reading the HYS because the words on the other side of the page I’m reading are quite dark. It doesn’t seem to matter if I’m in dim light or bright light — the backside words are proportionally dim or bright. Here are pictures of Psalms 91.

I generally don’t highlight my Bibles because I always want to be open to fresh understanding and insight. But I decided to highlight the table of contents of my HYS for this post. I didn’t purposely “go slow” or “pause.” I tried to highlight exactly as I would if I still used highlighters in my Bible.

This amount of see-through is unacceptable for me. Note you can read the pink-highlighted “NEBI’IM” through the page!

FREE – NOT FOR RESALE

This didn’t bother me much in August 2017. But now that I have over 600 blog posts, and I have never been able to copy/paste from the HYS, it bothers me a lot. The cover page makes a bold statement.

I have several issues with this. First, the context seems to be things that have nothing to do with money. “Heal the sick” etc.

These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: “Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans. But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give. Provide neither gold nor silver nor copper in your money belts, 10 nor bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor staffs; for a worker is worthy of his food.
Matthew 10:5-10 NKJV

Here are some other Scriptures.

Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.
1 Corinthians 9:14 KJV

For the Scripture says, “YOU SHALL NOT MUZZLE THE OX WHILE HE IS THRESHING,” and “The laborer is worthy of his wages.
1 Timothy 5:18 NASB

Second, as far as I’m concerned, I bought my copy. I looked on Amazon to see what leather, large print Bibles cost. My “donation” matched or exceeded their minimum acceptable, so they shipped me MY HYS large print Bible. Just about every time I see the prominent FREE – NEVER TO BE SOLD, my mind says, “Nope! I bought it.”

Third, why are they withholding the most common distribution format, electronic? Freely they received, apparently, but they are not giving out the easiest and fastest way of sending Scripture to someone halfway around the world.

The Bible teaches that for some things, more than one opinion is correct.

One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord; and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it. He who eats, eats to the Lord, for he gives God thanks; and he who does not eat, to the Lord he does not eat, and gives God thanks.
Romans 14:5-6 NKJV

This may be one of those cases. I would never say the HYS people are lying. But from my point of view, “FREE – NEVER TO BE SOLD” simply isn’t true – especially since the electronic editions are withheld.

Man Is Not Your Teacher

The FOOTNOTES paragraph makes a bold statement about the Ruah ha’Qodesh (the Holy Spirit) being your teacher, and not man.

While this is true, it neglects the Scripture that clearly teaches about teachers. Sometimes the Holy Spirit teaches through others. I think the HYS assertion to not learn from human teachers is somewhere between foolish and dangerous. “Hey, brand-new born-again Christian. Sit in your house and read your HYS. You don’t need man to teach you.” Here is some alternative Scripture.

11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.
Ephesians 4:11-16 NKJV

12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. 14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Hebrews 5:12-14 NKJV

No Footnotes?

All my other printed Bibles have footnotes. One of them has very, very few footnotes. Perhaps its most common footnote is, “The Hebrew meaning of this word is uncertain.” But that is good information to know. It explains why some passages read so differently in different translations!

In my opinion it is impossible that the HYS translators chose the exact right word or phrase in every instance for all English readers worldwide. It seems to me understanding of the Scriptures would be increased by an occasional footnote, giving alternate translations for a word or phrase, or even, “The Hebrew meaning of this word is uncertain.”

Which Texts Were Used? And Why?

In my copy of the HYS there is no preface, introduction or appendix that states the texts used for the translation, and why those texts were chosen. I would like to know which texts were chosen and why they were chosen, and am surprised it is not included.

“Tight” Format

My copy of the HYS has little space between the columns, and no extra space between chapters.

This is an issue for me because one of my favorite ways of studying the Bible is to make copies of pages of the Bible, cut them up, and make posters. I may not highlight my Bibles, but I sure enjoy marking up the posters! The “tightness” of the text makes it difficult to cut up.

For HYS

If any HYS people read this, I hope they consider it counsel and not criticism. The HYS translation seems exceptional; it is the “packaging” and electronic editions availability that need improvement.

Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellers they are established.
Proverbs 15:22 KJV

Only with sound guidance should you wage war, and victory lies in a multitude of counselors.

Psalms 91 – Restored Names Bibles

Psalms 91 is worth reading and praying in my three restored-names Bibles. But a shortcoming of all three is I know of no way to easily paste their formatted text into blog posts. So here are screen shots and photos.

Eth-CEPHER

The Eth-CEPHER is available as a hardbound book and as an app for mobile devices. A nice feature of the app is the definition popups for highlighted words.

Here are all the definition popups for Psalms 91.

The Scriptures, 2009 Edition (TS2009)

My TS2009 is the hardcopy Bible I use most. It is also available in electronic for for programs such as e-Sword and theWord. The 1998 edition is also available for e-readers. Here is Psalms 91 TS2009 from e-Sword. It would take me maybe an hour to get it in the format I usually use.

Psa 91:1  He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High, Who abides under the shadow of the Almighty,

Psa 91:2  He is saying of יהוה, “My refuge and my stronghold, My Elohim, in whom I trust!”

Psa 91:3  For He delivers you from the snare of a trapper, From the destructive pestilence.

Psa 91:4  He covers you with His feathers, And under His wings you take refuge; His truth is a shield and armour.

Psa 91:5  You are not afraid of the dread by night, Of the arrow that flies by day,

Psa 91:6  Of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Of destruction that ravages at midday.

Psa 91:7  A thousand fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it does not come near you.

Psa 91:8  Only with your eyes you look on, And see the reward of the wrong ones.

Psa 91:9  Because you have made יהוה – My refuge, the Most High – your dwelling place,

Psa 91:10  No evil befalls you, And a plague does not come near your tent;

Psa 91:11  For He commands His messengers concerning you, To guard you in all your ways.

Psa 91:12  They bear you up in their hands, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.

Psa 91:13  You tread upon lion and cobra, Young lion and serpent you trample under foot.

Psa 91:14  “Because he cleaves to Me in love, Therefore I deliver him; I set him on high, Because he has known My Name.

Psa 91:15  “When he calls on Me, I answer him; I am with him in distress; I deliver him and esteem him.

Psa 91:16  “With long life I satisfy him, And show him My deliverance.”

The TS2009 is online at Bible dot com, but the site’s navigation has been broken for quite some time. I had to edit the URL by hand:

Why I Read Multiple Bible Translations Example

I follow the reading plan in my One Year Bible, and I usually first read the passages in my hardcopy of The Scriptures. It has taken over a year, but now that I know the pagan origins of words like God and Lord, it just “feels better on my insides” to first read the passages in one of my restored-names Bibles. But often, after reading the passage in The Scriptures, I read the passage in one or more other translations. This usually results in better understanding, but sometimes leaves me somewhat frustrated – wanting to be able to understand the original languages. Let me give a recent example that is a little of both – both better understanding and some frustration.

The apostle Peter writes about false teachers in 2 Peter 2. I first read verse 18 in The Scriptures.

For speaking arrogant nonsense, they entice – through the lusts of the flesh, through indecencies – the ones who have indeed escaped from those living in delusion,
2 Peter 2:18 TS2009

Then I read 2 Peter 2 in the NIV. When I came to verse 18, my reading came to a full stop.

For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error.
2 Peter 2:18 NIV

Do you see the difference? In the TS2009 everyone is at risk to false teachers. In the NIV it is new believers who are vulnerable! To me this is a huge difference! Which translation is right? I quit reading the NIV to research this. Many translations use some form of “just escaped.” All these next Scriptures are from this page, 2 Peter 2:18.

With lofty but empty words, they appeal to the sensual passions of the flesh and entice those who are just escaping from others who live in error.
BSB

For speaking out arrogant words of vanity they entice by fleshly desires, by sensuality, those who barely escape from the ones who live in error,
NASB

For by speaking high-sounding but empty words they are able to entice, with fleshly desires and with debauchery, people who have just escaped from those who reside in error.
NET Bible

The KJV and a few others use “clean escaped.”

For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.
2 Peter 2:18 KJV

For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.
2 Peter 2:18 American KJV

For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, את eth through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.
KEPHA SHENIY (2 PETER) 2:18 את CEPHER

I looked at the Greek text and the Greek word. I looked up the word “clean” in Webster’s 1828 Dictionary and at King James Bible Dictionary, to see perhaps if “clean” meant “just” or “barely” in 1611. (It didn’t. “Clean” back then meant substantially what “clean” means today.) These are my current conclusions, which I find both enlightening and somewhat frustrating.

  • Those believers who have “just escaped” or “barely escaped” from the wrong are especially at risk from false teachers, but I will not go so far as to say long-time believers are free of risk from deception from false teachers. Indeed, 2 Peter 3:17 tells us to keep on our toes spiritually.
  • The “clean escaped” translation, as found in the KJV and others, appears to be a translation error. I find this conclusion unsettling.
  • But as always, I may be wrong!

Fear of the Lord from Sirach (Ecclesiasticus)

If you had a 1611 King James Bible you could open it and read from the book of Sirach, which is also called Ecclesiasticus. This book was also included in the Geneva Bible, the predecessor to the King James. I have a facsimile 1560 edition.

Recently I have been reading from some of the Apocryphal books. I haven’t made up my mind if they are “Scripture,” but so far I have not read anything that contradicts what is in the usual 66 books of the Bible. As I heard on a YouTube video (no link, sorry), “What about a bunch of Romans deciding what we should read?”

These quotes from Sirach are from one of my Restored-Names Bibles, the Eth-CEPHER. If you would rather read “The fear of the Lord” than “The fear of YAHUAH,” click here for the King James Version of Sirach.

1 ALL wisdom comes from YAHUAH, and is with him forever. 2 Who can number the sand of the sea, and the drops of rain, and the days of eternity? 3 Who can find out the height of heaven, and the breadth of the earth, and the deep, and wisdom? 4 Wisdom has been created before all things, and the understanding of prudence from everlasting. 5 The Word of EL ELYON is the fountain of wisdom; and her ways are everlasting commandments.
SIRACH (ECCLESIASTICUS) 1:1-5 את CEPHER

11 The fear of YAHUAH is honour, and glory, and gladness, and a crown of rejoicing. 12 The fear of YAHUAH makes a merry heart, and gives joy, and gladness, and a long life. 13 Whoso fears YAHUAH, it shall go well with him at the last, and he shall find favour in the day of his death. 14 To fear YAHUAH is the beginning of wisdom: and it was created with the faithful in the womb. 15 She has built an everlasting foundation with men, and she shall continue with their seed. 16 To fear YAHUAH is fulness of wisdom, and fills men with her fruits. 17 She fills all their house with things desirable, and the garners with her increase. 18 The fear of YAHUAH is a crown of wisdom, making peace and perfect health to flourish; both which are the gifts of ELOHIYM: and it enlarges their rejoicing that love him. 19 Wisdom rains down skill and knowledge of understanding, and exalts them to honour that hold her fast. 20 The root of wisdom is to fear YAHUAH, and the branches thereof are long life. 21 The fear of YAHUAH drives away sins: and where it is present, it turns away wrath.
SIRACH (ECCLESIASTICUS) 1:11-21 את CEPHER

26 If you desire wisdom, guard the commandments, and YAHUAH shall give her unto you. 27 For the fear of YAHUAH is wisdom and instruction: and belief and meekness are his delight.
SIRACH (ECCLESIASTICUS) 1:26-27 את CEPHER

7 Ye that fear YAHUAH, wait for his mercy; and go not aside, lest ye fall. 8 Ye that fear YAHUAH, believe him; and your reward shall not fail. 9 Ye that fear YAHUAH, hope for good, and for everlasting joy and mercy.
SIRACH (ECCLESIASTICUS) 2:7-9 את CEPHER

15 They that fear YAHUAH will not disobey his word; and they that love him will guard his ways. 16 They that fear YAHUAH will seek that which is well, pleasing unto him; and they that love him shall be filled with the Torah. 17 They that fear YAHUAH will prepare their hearts, and humble their souls in his sight, 18 Saying, We will fall into the hands of YAHUAH, and not into the hands of men: for as his majesty is, so is his mercy.

Isaiah 40:28-31 in Several Translations

A couple nights ago I read Isaiah 41. Then I backed up a little and read the last few verses of Isaiah 40. I kept reading and reading, and eventually had 6 Bibles open on the table. I’m not sure how long I read these passages over and over and over, but it could have been an hour or more. Here is the Scripture in several translations. I didn’t bold text what spoke especially to me, so you can let the Spirit speak what you especially need. Blessings!

28 Have you not known?
Have you not heard?
The everlasting God, the Lord,
The Creator of the ends of the earth,
Neither faints nor is weary.
His understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the weak,
And to those who have no might He increases strength.
30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary,
And the young men shall utterly fall,
31 But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.
Isaiah 40:28-31 NKJV

Have you not known? have you not heard, that ELOHAI OLAM, YAHUAH, the Creator of the ends of the earth, faints not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. He gives power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon YAHUAH shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. YESHA’YAHU 40:28-31 את CEPHER

“Did you not know? Have you not heard? The everlasting Elohim, יהוה, the Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. Isaiah 40:28-31 Amplified Bible (AMP)

28
Do you not know? Have you not heard?
The Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth
Does not become tired or grow weary;
There is no searching of His understanding.
29
He gives strength to the weary,
And to him who has no might He increases power.
30
Even youths grow weary and tired,
And vigorous young men stumble badly,
31
But those who wait for the Lord [who expect, look for, and hope in Him]
Will gain new strength and renew their power;
They will lift up their wings [and rise up close to God] like eagles [rising toward the sun];
They will run and not become weary,
They will walk and not grow tired.

Isaiah 40:28-31 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)

28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, does not faint or grow weary; there is no searching of His understanding.

29 He gives power to the faint and weary, and to him who has no might He increases strength [causing it to multiply and making it to abound].

30 Even youths shall faint and be weary, and [selected] young men shall feebly stumble and fall exhausted;

31 But those who wait for the Lord [who expect, look for, and hope in Him] shall change and renew their strength and power; they shall lift their wings and mount up [close to God] as eagles [mount up to the sun]; they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint or become tired.

Isaiah 40:28-31 King James Version (KJV)

28 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.

29 He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.

30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:

Deliverance From Bad Habits Verses – Restored Names Bibles

I have been “Eating my own dog food,” using my post: Scripture for Breaking Bad Habits. I have been noticing improvements in behavior. 🙂

There is nothing wrong with calling God, “God,” and His Son, “Jesus,” especially when witnessing or writing for others’ benefit. But I have been using “Restored Name Bibles” about 10 months and I am feeling led to use the restored names in my personal prayers. My “insides smile more” when I use “YHWH” instead of “God” or “LORD.”

This is what YHWH said about His name. See the Hebrew and Strong’s H3068.

And Elohim said further to Mosheh, “Thus you are to say to the children of Yisra’ĕl, ‘יהוה Elohim of your fathers, the Elohim of Aḇraham, the Elohim of Yitsḥaq, and the Elohim of Ya‛aqoḇ, has sent me to you. This is My Name forever, and this is My remembrance to all generations.’”
Shemoth (Exodus) 3:15 TS2009

And ELOHAI said moreover unto El-Mosheh, Thus shall you say unto the children of Yashar’el, YAHUAH ELOHAI of your fathers, the ELOHIYM of Avraham, the ELOHAI of Yitschaq, and the ELOHAI of Ya’aqov, has sent me unto you: this is my name forever, and this is my mention unto all generations.
EXODUS 3:15 Eth-CEPHER

These are for my benefit. Use them if you wish. 🙂 (Suggestions for use.)

Deliverance From Bad Habits – The Scriptures (TS2009)

Ps 31:1-4 In You, O יהוה, I have taken refuge;
Let me never be ashamed;
Deliver me in Your righteousness.
Incline Your ear to me,
Deliver me speedily;
Be a rock of refuge to me,
A house of defence to save me.
For You are my rock and my stronghold;
For Your Name’s sake lead me and guide me.
Bring me out of the net which they have hidden for me,
For You are my stronghold.
Ps 31:7 I exult and rejoice in Your loving-commitment,
For You have seen my affliction;
You have known the distresses of my life,
Ps 46:1 Elohim is our refuge and strength,
A help in distress, soon found.
Ps 46:5 Elohim is in her midst, she does not topple;
Elohim does help her when morning turns.
Ps 55:18 He has redeemed my life in peace
From the battle against me,
For there were many against me.
Ps 107:6 Then they cried out to יהוה in their distress,
He delivered them out of their troubles.
Ps 107:13-14 And they cried out to יהוה in their distress,
And He saved them out of their troubles.
He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death,
And He broke their chains in pieces.
Ps 107:20 He sent His word and healed them,
And delivered them from their destructions.
Pr 3:26 For יהוה is at your side,
And He shall guard your foot from being caught.
Pr 26:11 As a dog returns to his own vomit,
So a fool repeats his folly.
Is 41:13 For I, יהוה your Elohim, am strengthening your right hand, saying to you, ‘Do not fear, I shall help you.’
Zech 4:6c “Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,” said יהוה of hosts.
Jn 8:36 If, then, the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
Rom 6:11-13 So you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to Elohim in Messiah יהושע our Master. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, to obey it in its desires, neither present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to Elohim as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to Elohim.
Rom 8:2 For the torah of the Spirit of the life in Messiah יהושע has set me free from the torah of sin and of death.
Rom 8:13 For if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you shall live.
Rom 12:1-2 I call upon you, therefore, brothers, through the compassion of Elohim, to present your bodies a living offering – set-apart, well-pleasing to Elohim – your reasonable worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you prove what is that good and well-pleasing and perfect desire of Elohim.
1 Co 3:16-17 Do you not know that you are a Dwelling Place of Elohim and that the Spirit of Elohim dwells in you? If anyone destroys the Dwelling Place of Elohim, Elohim shall destroy him. For the Dwelling Place of Elohim is set-apart, which you are.
1 Co 6:19-20 Or do you not know that your body is the Dwelling Place of the Set-apart Spirit who is in you, which you have from Elohim, and you are not your own? For you were bought with a price, therefore esteem Elohim in your body and in your spirit, which are of Elohim.
Gal 5:22-24 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustworthiness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no Torah. And those who are of Messiah have impaled the flesh with its passions and the desires.
Gal 6:7-8 Do not be led astray: Elohim is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he shall also reap. Because he who sows to his own flesh shall reap corruption from the flesh, but he who sows to the Spirit shall reap everlasting life from the Spirit.
Philip 4:6-7 Do not worry at all, but in every matter , by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to Elohim. And the peace of Elohim, which surpasses all understanding, shall guard your hearts and minds through Messiah יהושע.
Jms 4:7-8 So then subject yourselves to Elohim. Resist the devil and he shall flee from you. Draw near to Elohim and He shall draw near to you. Cleanse hands, sinners. And cleanse the hearts, you double-minded!
1 Pet 1:16b “Be set-apart, for I am set-apart.”
1 Pet 5:8-9 Be sober, watch, because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in the belief, knowing that the same hardships are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.
1 Jn 3:8b For this purpose the Son of Elohim was manifested: to destroy the works of the devil.

The RUACH CHOKMAH V’ZAYON – The Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation

Sometime I’m going to do a comparative review of all three of my restored-name Bibles. One of them is the Eth-CEPHER. More than any other translation I have ever used, the Eth-CEPHER makes me stop and dig into the Word. It’s delightful! This passage is Paul’s prayer for the saints recorded in Ephesians 1.

15 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your belief in ADONAI YAHUSHA, and love unto all the qodeshiym, 16 Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; 17 That YAHUAH of our ADONAI YAHUSHA HAMASHIACH, the Father of glory, may give unto you the RUACH CHOKMAH V’ZAYON in the knowledge of him: 18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the qodeshiym, 19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, 20 Which he wrought in MASHIACH, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, 21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: 22 And has put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the called out assembly, 23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that fills all in all.
EPHESIANS 1:15-23 Eth-CEPHER

In verse 17 there is a footnote to “RUACH CHOKMAH V’ZAYON” which says, “Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation“. The capital letters in the text and the footnote caught my attention. Could this be referring to an actual Spirit? I had not thought of that before. I’m not sure what I thought it meant, but it wasn’t a distinct, separate Spirit. As you can see on this BibleHub page, there are no translations that use “Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation”. For example, this is the King James:

That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:
Ephesians 1:17 KJV

A few capitalize “Spirit”.

I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, would give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him.
Ephesians 1:17 CSB

This is of interest to me, because I have read the book of Revelation often in these last months, and one of the many things I don’t understand is the seven spirits of God. There are four references to them in Revelation.

John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne,
Revelation 1:4 ESV

“And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: ‘The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. “I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead.”‘”
Revelation 3:1 ESV

From the throne came flashes of lightning, and rumblings and peals of thunder, and before the throne were burning seven torches of fire, which are the seven spirits of God,
Revelation 4:5 ESV

And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.
Revelation 5:6 ESV

Are these the seven spirits of God? The “Spirit of the Lord” plus the six?

There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse,
and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and might,
the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.
He shall not judge by what his eyes see,
or decide disputes by what his ears hear,
but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
Isaiah 11:1-4 ESV

This is Isaiah 11:2 from the Eth-CEPHER.

And the RUACH YAHUAH shall rest upon him, the RUACH CHOKMAH and BIYNAH, the RUACH ESTAH and GEVURAH, the RUACH DA’ATH and of the YIR’AH of YAHUAH;
ISAIAH 11:2 Eth-CEPHER

Footnotes:

  • CHOKMAH – Spirit of Wisdom
  • BIYNAH – Spirit of Understanding
  • ETSAH – Spirit of Counsel
  • GEVURAH – Spirit of Might
  • DA’ATH – Spirit of Knowledge
  • YIR’AH – Spirit of Fear (Awesome Reverence)

Here is the passage in a more well-known translation.

For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
Ephesians 1:15-23 ESV

Last week I think I would have said Paul prayed for 5 things.

  1. Receive the spirit of wisdom and revelation.
  2. Have the eyes of the heart enlightened.
  3. Know the hope of the calling.
  4. Know the riches of our inheritance.
  5. Know the greatness of His power towards us.

After thinking about “The Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation,” I now think Paul may have only prayed for one thing – that God would give the Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation in the knowledge of Him. The other 4 things are the result of that one gift.

  1. Have the eyes of the heart enlightened.
  2. Know the hope of the calling.
  3. Know the riches of our inheritance.
  4. Know the greatness of His power towards us.

Take Up Your Walking Stick and Follow Me

As a young Christian, I was surprised to learn that men and women working on new translations of the Bible into English made many of their translation decisions based on what prior translators decided. But what if the prior translators got something wrong? Then the mistranslation would propagate through the years, misguiding potentially generations of believers. This might be such an example. Take this well known verse, and its Greek and Strong’s.

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”
Matthew 16:24 ESV

Speaking in the natural, does “cross” make sense?

  • Was Jesus carrying a cross at that time? No.
  • He didn’t carry His own cross very far. When Jesus was on His way to be crucified, Simon from Cyrene carried Jesus’ cross.
  • How far, and how fast can you go carrying a heavy piece of timber?
  • It seems to me to contradict Matthew 11:30, “My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

The Strong’s page is all about the cross — the stake, except for the beginning of Thayer’s Greek Lexicon, which lists staff before it gets to cross:

Thayer’s Greek Lexicon

STRONGS NT 4716: σταυρός

σταυρός, σταυροῦ, (from ἵστημι (root sta); cf. Latinstauro, English staff (see Skeat, Etymological Dictionary, under the word); Curtius, § 216; Vanicek, p. 1126);

I think the Eth-CEPHER gets is right.

Then said YAHUSHA unto his Talmidiym, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his staff, and follow me.
Matthew 16:24 Eth-CEPHER

A big hat-tip to Alan Horvath. In one of his videos he said something like, “When translating the Bible, it is not enough to know the languages. You also have to know the Word and the culture.” In other places in the New Testament, translating stauros as cross makes sense. But in Matthew 16:24 I think staff, a walking stick, is the correct translation.

Reading English translations of the Bible is getting to feel like kissing through a screen door: There is a lot missing from the encounter. 😉 I want to be able to understand the original languages!

The Eth-CEPHER iPhone/iPad App

As I wrote in this post, the restored names of God in the  HalleluYah Scriptures  (HYS) have been a great blessing to me. I feel I know YHWH better by using the HYS. But the HYS is not available in any electronic form, which limits its usefulness for my blogging. I prefer to copy/paste verses in my blog posts, because sometimes I am a “Biblical Typist.” That is, the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing. 😉 So I have kept my eyes open for electronic restored-names English translations of the Bible. I found one, but I couldn’t easily determine how “accurate” it was. I have not used it in any of my posts.

Then I saw Stephen Pidgeon on the YouTube channels Israeli News Live and Parable of the Vineyard. Among other achievements, the man with two Ph.D. degrees is the key person in the creation of Eth-CEPHER, a restored-names English language translation. The web site: www.cepher.net

I bought the CEPHER app for my iPad and iPhone, and — Wow! It is powerful and useful.

My first Wow! was accidental. The translations I am aware of translate Proverbs 21:16 more or less like this:

A man who wanders from the way of understanding
Will rest in the assembly of the dead.
Proverbs 21:16 NASB

The Eth-CEPHER talks about giants!

The man that wanders out of the way of understanding shall remain in the assembly of the Repha’iym.
Proverbs 21:16 Eth-CEPHER

Study the Hebrew and the Strong’s. Eth-CEPHER is a thought-provoking translation, and it is not unique. From the BibleHub page:

Douay-Rheims Bible
A man that shall wander out of the way of doctrine, shall abide in the company of the giants.

Young’s Literal Translation
A man who is wandering from the way of understanding, In an assembly of Rephaim resteth.

I haven’t figured out the significance of the giants yet… 🙂

I recommend this app.
