God Is In Control!

Just a reminder that God is in charge of the world’s events.

“Remember this, and be assured;
Recall it to mind, you wrongdoers.
Remember the former things long past,
For I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is no one like Me,
10 Declaring the end from the beginning,
And from ancient times things which have not been done,
Saying, ‘My plan will be established,
And I will accomplish all My good pleasure’;
Isaiah 46:8-10 NASB

10 The Lord nullifies the plan of nations;
He frustrates the plans of peoples.
11 The plan of the Lord stands forever,
The plans of His heart from generation to generation.
Psalm 33:10-11 NASB

The LORD has made everything for its own purpose,
Even the wicked for the day of evil.
Proverbs 16:4 NASB

God is in charge of who is in leadership.

For not from the east, nor from the west,
Nor from the desert comes exaltation;
But God is the Judge;
He puts down one and exalts another.
Psalm 75:6-7 NASB

20 Daniel answered and said:

“Blessed be the name of God forever and ever,
For wisdom and might are His.
21 And He changes the times and the seasons;
He removes kings and raises up kings;
He gives wisdom to the wise
And knowledge to those who have understanding.
22 He reveals deep and secret things;
He knows what is in the darkness,
And light dwells with Him.
Daniel 2:20-22 NASB

24 “this is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the Most High, which has come upon my lord the king: 25 They shall drive you from men, your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make you eat grass like oxen. They shall wet you with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over you, till you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses.
Daniel 4:24-25 NASB

God is in control of what these leaders do.

The king’s heart is like channels of water in the hand of the LORD;
He turns it wherever He pleases.
Proverbs 21:1 NASB

Life on earth is getting interesting. Most days I have communion twice a day, when I get up and just before I go to bed. It is a great reminder that Jesus’ blood is the only reason I have eternal life. But perhaps the biggest benefit is I often find myself singing songs about Jesus’ blood in my mind throughout the day. It’s truly a blessing. There are many communion Scriptures in this post.

Hebrews Update – Have Communion With Jesus Daily

I’m just passing through.

20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; 21 who will transform the body of our lowly condition into conformity with His glorious body, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.
Philippians 3:20-21 NASB

13 All these died in faith, without receiving the promises, but having seen and welcomed them from a distance, and having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. 14 For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own. 15 And indeed if they had been thinking of that country which they left, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them.
Hebrews 11:13-16 NASB

11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! 13 But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.
2 Peter 3:11-13 NASB

Jesus is coming very soon. Be ready!

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.
1 Thessalonians 5:4-6 NKJV

32 “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors! 34 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”
Matthew 24:32-35 NKJV

34 But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. 35 For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.
Luke 21:34-36 NKJV

That Time I Kept My Mouth Shut

I have been thinking about a time I thought I was financially harmed by a fellow Christian. It was hard to do, but I decided to forgive, and try to forget, and never, ever bring it up. Later I was very glad I had done so. I became aware of more information, and my loss wasn’t as much as I had thought. Also, I could have used more wisdom to avoid the whole situation. But I’m glad I kept my mouth shut when the mess first started. I was mostly wrong, and would have had to apologize.

I’m wondering if this shouldn’t be my default response to all real and imagined offenses from Christians – forgive, don’t say a word, and let God work on both of us.

Do not say, “I will repay evil”;
Wait for the LORD, and He will save you.
Proverbs 20:22 NASB

God is my source anyway, not other people.

It is the blessing of the LORD that makes rich,
And He adds no sorrow to it.
Proverbs 10:22 NASB

The LORD is my shepherd,
I will not be in need.
Psalm 23:1 NASB

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided to you.
Matthew 6:33 NASB

Paul writes it is better to accept a loss than to go to court with a brother or sister in Christ.

I say this to your shame. Is it so, that there is not among you anyone wise who will be able to decide between his brothers and sisters, but brother goes to law with brother, and that before unbelievers?

Actually, then, it is already a defeat for you, that you have lawsuits with one another. Why not rather suffer the wrong? Why not rather be defrauded? On the contrary, you yourselves do wrong and defraud. And this to your brothers and sisters!
1 Corinthians 6:5-8 NASB

Jesus said we are to be known by how we love each other.

34 “I am giving you a new commandment, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are My disciples: if you have love for one another.”
John 13:34-35 NASB

It is my glory to overlook an offense.

A person’s discretion makes him slow to anger,
And it is his glory to overlook an offense.
Proverbs 19:11 NASB

When wronged by a fellow believer, forgiving and not saying anything may not always be appropriate, but I think it is a good place for me to start.

The beginning of strife is like letting out water,
So abandon the quarrel before it breaks out.
Proverbs 17:14 NASB

The Sunset That Almost Got Away

The sky was dull and gray approaching sundown, but I decided to head to the Sorum Dam near Reva, South Dakota anyway. For a long time I though I had wasted my time.

Then a faint reddish glow appeared. I used the telephoto to get some images on which to write text. Really exciting sunrise / sunset photos often resist legible text.

The glowing area got a little bigger and brighter.

Then, suddenly, rays appeared, bringing out details in the clouds above.

Then the sunset more or less exploded.

The sunset had the dignity to disappear gradually.

It even turned out to be one of those fairly rare “second chance” sunsets. Some sunsets linger a long time, but dimly. One can set up a tripod and take time exposures to capture these dim colors. It was about 14 degrees Fahrenheit with a persistent breeze so I chose not to set up a tripod. 😉

When I looked outside coming up on sunset time, I almost went back in the house. I’m glad I didn’t. I would have missed a great sunset. If there’s one thing I’ve learned shooting hundreds of sunrises and sunsets, it is that I’m lousy at predicting how good a sunrise or sunset will be.

(To do: Insert lesson here, maybe something like: “Life is like photography – Be there, ready to press the shutter.”)

When Does the Christian Life Get Easy?

When does the Christian life get easy? After we graduate into the new heaven and the new earth.

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among the people, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.
Revelation 21:1-4 NASB

Until then we are in a war.

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Ephesians 6:10-12 NASB

He trains my hands for battle,
So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
Psalm 18:34 NASB

Blessed be the Lord, my rock,
Who trains my hands for war,
And my fingers for battle;
Psalm 144:1 NASB

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not wage battle according to the flesh,for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses.
2 Corinthians 10:3-4 NASB

Suffering was part of the Father’s plan for Jesus.

Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered.
Hebrews 5:8 NASB

Therefore we shouldn’t be surprised when we go through some suffering.

12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though something strange were happening to you; 13 but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that at the revelation of His glory you may also rejoice and be overjoyed.
1 Peter 4:12-13 NASB

10 For You have put us to the test, God;
You have refined us as silver is refined.
11 You brought us into the net;
You laid an oppressive burden upon us.
12 You made men ride over our heads;
We went through fire and through water.
Yet You brought us out into a place of abundance.
Psalm 66:10-12 NASB

James says we should consider trials joy. I don’t think I’m quite there yet. 😉

Consider it all joy, my brothers and sisters, when you encounter various trials,knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
James 1:2-4 NASB

During affliction and suffering, we can have sweet fellowship with Jesus.

I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to Him in His death,
Philippians 3:10 BSB

Psalms 119 has a lot to say about affliction.

50 This is my comfort in my misery,
That Your word has revived me.

67 Before I was afflicted I went astray,
But now I keep Your word.

71 It is good for me that I was afflicted,
So that I may learn Your statutes.

75 I know, Lord, that Your judgments are righteous,
And that You have afflicted me in faithfulness.

92 If Your Law had not been my delight,
Then I would have perished in my misery.

107 I am exceedingly afflicted;
Revive me, Lord, according to Your word.

153 Look at my affliction and rescue me,
For I have not forgotten Your Law.
Psalm 119:50, 67, 71, 75, 92, 107, 153 NASB

Many are the afflictions, and many are the deliverances.

The afflictions of the righteous are many,
But the Lord rescues him from them all.
Psalm 34:19 NASB

So let us hang in there. Our sufferings are doing us eternal good.

16 Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer person is decaying, yet our inner person is being renewed day by day. 17 For our momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, 18 while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18 NASB

Jesus is coming very soon. Be ready!

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

Psalm 123 – “Lord, We Have Had It Up To Here With The Wicked!”

Every month I get to read Psalm 123. The last two verses make me think of my own commentary, “Lord, we have had it with proud dirtbags taking advantage of us!”

Show favour to us, O יהוה, show favour to us!
For we are exceedingly filled with mockery.
Our being is exceedingly filled
With the scoffing of those who are at ease,
With the mockery of the proud.
Tehillim (Psalms) 123:3-4 TS2009

Here is the passage in the NKJV and the Amplified Classic.

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us!
For we are exceedingly filled with contempt.
Our soul is exceedingly filled
With the scorn of those who are at ease,
With the contempt of the proud.
Psalm 123:3-4 NKJV

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on and loving-kindness for us, for we are exceedingly satiated with contempt.

Our life is exceedingly filled with the scorning and scoffing of those who are at ease and with the contempt of the proud (irresponsible tyrants who disregard God’s law).
Psalm 123:3-4 AMPC

I like these less formal translations too.

Mercy, God, mercy!
    We’ve been kicked around long enough,
Kicked in the teeth by complacent rich men,
    kicked when we’re down by arrogant brutes.
Psalm 123:3-4 The Message (MSG)

Lord, be merciful to us,
    because we have been insulted much too long.
We have had enough of the hateful words of those proud people
    who make fun of us and show us no respect.
Psalm 123:3-4 Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)

Please have mercy, Lord!
    We have been insulted
    more than we can stand,
and we can’t take more abuse
    from those proud,
    conceited people.
Psalm 123:3-4 Contemporary English Version (CEV)

I am reminded of the “END IT!” passage.

O Elohim, how long would the adversary reproach?
Would the enemy despise Your Name forever?
Why do You hold back Your hand, even Your right hand?
From the midst of Your bosom – end it!
Tehillim (Psalms) 74:10-11 TS2009

Why do You withdraw Your hand, even Your right hand?
Extend it from Your chest and destroy them!
Psalm 74:11 NASB

Most people are WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!

How God used photography to change me: Learning To See Beauty

Jesus is coming soon.

Has the rapture happened?
   You can still be saved and go to heaven!
