The devil hates it when people read the Bible, but he especially hates it when people read the book of Revelation. Here are some reasons why.
The Special Blessing
All Bible reading blesses, but there is a special blessing for those who read or hear Revelation, and put into practice what they learn. The devil doesn’t want people to have this special blessing.
Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near. Revelation 1:3 NKJV
“Behold, I am coming quickly!Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.” Revelation 22:7 NKJV
The Letters to the Churches
Jesus Himself dictated letters to seven churches. The letters are for everyone. Well, everyone with ears to hear.
2:7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God. 11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death. 17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it. 29 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

We are not saved by our works, but the letters teach that works are vital.

Jesus reinforces this in the last chapter.
And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. Revelation 22:12 KJV
Jesus is fully pleased with just two of the seven churches. He rebukes the other five for very specific reasons. Failure to overcome will result in loss of salvation.
2:11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.
3:5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.
16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Revelation 2:11, 3:5, 16 KJV
Yes, the book of Revelation teaches that salvation can be lost. Go to the very end of the Bible and back up two verses:
And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. Revelation 22:19 KJV
I changed my life based on what I learned from Jesus’ letters to the churches. That is, I have received (at least part of) the promised special blessing.

The devil does not want people to read Jesus’ letters to the churches, get convicted, and spend hours agonizing whether doctrines they were taught are in fact doctrines of devils that will send them to torment in the lake of fire forever and ever and ever and ever. Satan would rather have them believe they can live any way they want and still go to heaven.
Knowledge of Future Events
Ignorance is not bliss. It can be fatal.
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: Hosea 4:6a KJV
The devil wants people to be ignorant of Scriptures like these in Revelation.
16 He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, 17 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Revelation 13:16-17 NKJV
9 Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand,10 he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.” Revelation 14:9-11 NKJV
The Devil is a Loser
The devil does not want people to read Revelation, because it shows what a loser he is. He and his angels get kicked out of heaven.
7 And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, 8 but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. 9 So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Revelation 12:7-9 NKJV
He fails to harm the woman who gave birth to the male child.
13 And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child.14 But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle so that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to the place where she is to be nourished for a time, and times, and half a time.15 The serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, to sweep her away with a flood.16 But the earth came to the help of the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed the river that the dragon had poured from his mouth. Revelation 12:13-16 ESV
The devil is utterly defeated in his battle against Jesus. The devil’s two main guys are captured and tossed in the lake of fire, and his armies are slaughtered.
19 And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. 20 Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.21 And the rest were killed with the sword which proceeded from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse. And all the birds were filled with their flesh. Revelation 19:19-21 NKJV
The devil is then chained and cast into prison for a thousand years.
Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2 He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; 3 and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while. Revelation 20:1-3 NKJV
When released, the devil leads one last rebellion. But it fails spectacularly, and the devil goes to his eternal reward in the lake of fire.
7 Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea. 9 They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them. 10 The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. Revelation 20:7-10 NKJV
No wonder the devil doesn’t want people reading Revelation. He doesn’t want them to know his future!
The New Heaven and the New Earth
The devil does not want people meditating on how wonderful eternal life will be. It could give them added strength to withstand trials!
Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. 2 Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. 4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”
5 Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.” Revelation 21:1-5 NKJV
And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, wasthe tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. 4 They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads.5 There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. In my last post, Interesting Numbers in Numbers Chapter One, I look at the statistical improbability that the counts of the men of war in Israel’s tribes happened by chance. Still, there may be some doubt whether the numbers are approximations or actual counts.
Numbers chapter three proves that counts in the book of Numbers are accurate. God tells Moses to count the male Levites a month old and older, and the count comes to 22,000.
14 And the Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying,15 “List the sons of Levi, by fathers’ houses and by clans; every male from a month old and upward you shall list.”
39 All those listed among the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron listed at the commandment of the Lord, by clans, all the males from a month old and upward, were 22,000. Numbers 3:14-15, 39 ESV
God then tells Moses to count the firstborn males a month old and older in Israel. The count was 22,273.
40 And the Lord said to Moses, “List all the firstborn males of the people of Israel, from a month old and upward, taking the number of their names.41 And you shall take the Levites for me—I am the Lord—instead of all the firstborn among the people of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the cattle of the people of Israel.”42 So Moses listed all the firstborn among the people of Israel, as the Lord commanded him.43 And all the firstborn males, according to the number of names, from a month old and upward as listed were 22,273. Numbers 3:40-43 ESV
God then proves that He can do math. 🙂
44 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,45 “Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the people of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle. The Levites shall be mine: I am the Lord.46 And as the redemption price for the 273 of the firstborn of the people of Israel, over and above the number of the male Levites,47 you shall take five shekels per head; you shall take them according to the shekel of the sanctuary (the shekel of twenty gerahs),48 and give the money to Aaron and his sons as the redemption price for those who are over.”49 So Moses took the redemption money from those who were over and above those redeemed by the Levites.50 From the firstborn of the people of Israel he took the money, 1,365 shekels, by the shekel of the sanctuary.51 And Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and his sons, according to the word of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses. Yes, 22,273 – 22,000 = 273, and 273 * 5 = 1,365. I conclude that the counts in Numbers are accurate counts, not approximations. 🙂

God gave me math and science talent, and I find lists of numbers like this one from Numbers 1 very interesting. God told Moses to count the number of people able to go to war.
The Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying,2 “Take a census of all the congregation of the people of Israel, by clans, by fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, every male, head by head.3 From twenty years old and upward, all in Israel who are able to go to war, you and Aaron shall list them, company by company.” Numbers 1:1-3 ESV
Here are the results.
20 The people of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:21 those listed of the tribe of Reuben were 46,500. … 23 those listed of the tribe of Simeon were 59,300. … 25 those listed of the tribe of Gad were 45,650. … 27 those listed of the tribe of Judah were 74,600. … 29 those listed of the tribe of Issachar were 54,400. … 31 those listed of the tribe of Zebulun were 57,400. … 33 those listed of the tribe of Ephraim were 40,500. … 35 those listed of the tribe of Manasseh were 32,200. … 37 those listed of the tribe of Benjamin were 35,400. … 39 those listed of the tribe of Dan were 62,700. … 41 those listed of the tribe of Asher were 41,500. … 43 those listed of the tribe of Naphtali were 53,400.

It is natural to assume these are rounded numbers, like the distance to the sun is rounded to the nearest million km in this table.
This fact suggest to me that the number of fighting men in each tribe are exact numbers, not rounded at all. And that raises interesting math consequences. It has been many years since my college statistics classes. I may get some details wrong, but I think the following analysis is essentially correct. 🙂
If you throw a pair of dice, there is 1 chance in 36 both dice will be 2. The first can be any of 1 through 6, and the second can also be any of 1 through 6. You get the total possibilities by multiplying the individual possibilities of 6 and 6.
If you throw 1 die, the odds of “0” is 1 in 10. If you throw 2 dice, the odds of both “0” is 1 in 100. If you throw 3 dice, the odds of all “0” is 1 in 1000. If you throw 4 dice, the odds of all “0” is 1 in 10,000. … If you throw 12 dice, the odds of all “0” is 1 in 1,000,000,000,000.
That is, if the counts listed are exact counts, there is just one chance in a trillion that all counts end in “0” by chance!
Now suppose you have twelve 100-sided dice, labeled “00” through “99”, instead of “1” through “100” as shown here.
What are the odds of throwing 12 100-sided dice, and having 11 show “00” and one show “50”? Here is where my statistics knowledge is a little rusty. There might be a difference between:
Any one of the dice can be 50, and the rest 00, and
“Dice Gad” must be 50, and the rest 00.
So this calculation might be off. But it is essentially true – it shows that if the counts are exact, it is extremely unlikely they happened by chance!
If you throw 1 die, the odds of “00” is 1 in 100. If you throw 2 dice, the odd of both “00” is 1 in 10,000. If you throw 3 dice, the odds of all “00” is 1 in 1,000,000. If you throw 4 dice, the odds of 1 “50” and 3 “00” is 1 in 100,000,000. … If you throw 12 dice, the odds of 1 “50” and 11 “00” is 1 in 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.
That is, if the counts are exact, there is but one chance in a septillion (a trillion trillion) that 11 end in “00” and one ends in “50”!
If the counts are indeed exact, what are the implications, since is extremely unlikely they happened by chance? Here are some Scriptures to spark your meditation. 🙂
