My analysis of of David and Shimei may be wrong, so be sure to make up your own mind.

King David committed adultery with Bathsheba and murdered her husband Uriah. Yet God forgave David of adultery and murder.
Therefore it seems to me that David should be really, really good at forgiving other people. The story of David and Shimei suggests otherwise.
When David was fleeing from his son Absalom Shimei cursed David and threw rocks at him. Later, Shimei repented and David made him a promise that he wouldn’t be killed. But these are some of David’s instructions to the just-crowned king Solomon:
8 “And remember Shimei son of Gera, the man from Bahurim in Benjamin. He cursed me with a terrible curse as I was fleeing to Mahanaim. When he came down to meet me at the Jordan River, I swore by the Lord that I would not kill him. 9 But that oath does not make him innocent. You are a wise man, and you will know how to arrange a bloody death for him.”
1 Kings 2:8-9 NLT
Solomon does have Shimei killed.
A lesson of David and Shimei — though David had major flaws, including not forgiving as he had been forgiven, I believe David made it to heaven and will rule as a king again under King Jesus here on earth during Jesus’ 1,000-year reign. God’s love and forgiveness for us deeply flawed sinful humans is beyond description!
Jesus is coming very, very soon. Be ready!
4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. 5 You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.
