Restore to me the joy of Your salvation,

Parts of Psalms 51 are very familiar to me because they were part of the Lutheran liturgy I grew up saying and singing. Yet I never really understood the second part of verse 12. As show above, there is quite a variance in how it is translated. What does “Uphold me with thy free spirit” really mean? Yesterday I read Ps 51 in the NLT, and I think those translators nailed it.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and make me willing to obey you.
