I know it is important to forgive other people. Jesus Himself taught that I must forgive others to have God forgive me.
14 “If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. 15 But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

Despite knowing how important it is to forgive others, sometimes I have to really work at it — my sinful flesh loves to hold a grudge. There are two main Scriptures I use to “jumpstart” forgiving someone else when forgiving them is hard. First, I acknowledge my weakness and ask God’s strength in order to forgive them from my heart.
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
2 Corinthians 12:9 ESV
Second, this wonderful verse from Proverbs helps me put things into perspective. No person can sin against me as much as I sinned against God. All sins of others against me are trivial compared to my sin against God, and He says it is my glory to overlook them.
Good sense makes one slow to anger,
and it is his glory to overlook an offense.

Good sense and discretion make a man slow to anger,
And it is his honor and glory to overlook a transgression or an offense [without seeking revenge and harboring resentment].

These two Scriptures help me forgive someone from my heart if I’m having trouble forgiving them. If you ever have a resentment against someone, I suggest you try them. 😊
