Your Word is a Lamp and a Light

God’s Word provides both step-by-step and overall direction.

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Psalm 119:105 ESV

I have had a picture of this verse in my mind for years. Overall the picture is very dark, but if you look closely you can make out the details. There is a broad road that ends at a cliff, with a dull red glow visible. A person is walking on a narrow path that ascends straight to the bright light of heaven at the end. The light from heaven lights the path, making its direction clear. The person is carrying a lantern that casts its bright light on the path, allowing the person to see bear traps, snares and loose stones that could cause loss of footing if stepped on.

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Psalm 119:105 ESV

I love this verse. 🙂

How to Pray While Driving, Walking, Etc.

I lived in the Washington DC area for a number of years and wanted to make good use of my automobile commute time. It was normally about 45 minutes each way, but traffic and accidents on the DC beltway could make the time much longer. In particular, I had read The Tongue – A Creative Force by Charles Capps, and wanted to pray the confessions he put together. I had tried writing prayers on note cards. This proved ineffective in heavy traffic, as I did not want to take my eyes off the road. I also knew I couldn’t just record a cassette tape of the confessions. I had a prayer tape from a pastor, but it was difficult to memorize the whole tape. The pastor would often be halfway through a verse before I would remember it. It was not an effective way to pray.

Then I had an idea. I could make a tape with a brief introduction of each confession, to jog my memory to be able pray along with the verse. I had typed the confessions in plural form so I could pray for me and my house per Joshua 24:15. (Images below.) I wanted to say each confession twice, so these are the first three confessions as I recorded them.

We are the body. We are the body of Christ and Satan has no power over me and my house. For we overcome evil with good. We are the body of Christ and Satan has no power over me and my house. For we overcome evil with good.

We are of God. We are of God and have overcome him (Satan). For greater is He that is in me and my house, than he that is in the world. We are of God and have overcome him (Satan). For greater is He that is in me and my house, than he that is in the world.

We will fear no evil. We will fear no evil for thou art with me and my house, Lord, Your Word and Your Spirit they comfort me and my house. We will fear no evil for thou art with me and my house, Lord, Your Word and Your Spirit they comfort me and my house.

This worked wonderfully well! After just a few times the slight memory jog for each confession was enough I could pray right along with myself on the tape. A few months later I recorded the “Material Needs” and “Wisdom and Guidance” on the back of the tape as an alternative to rewinding. Around 2005 I converted them to MP3s. I still use them. I will often walk around the house praying along with the iPhone in my shirt pocket. I made a few mistakes and there is tape hiss, but I don’t notice the hiss when I’m praying along with it. Feel free to download and use these. And of course, feel free to use this technique to record your own prayers.

All I have is printouts of my script. It was probably an AmiPro document that was lost on a hard disk crash on a PC that was too old to be networked, and whose floppy drive had failed. No, USB memory sticks were not an option in the 1990’s.  🙂  Images

Christian Streakers

In the 1970’s there was a craze of people taking off their clothes and running through public places. It was called streaking. Even the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson was streaked.

Don’t be a Christian Streaker. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Put on the whole armor of God!

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,

Suffering is Mandatory

This verse spoke to me recently.

Now if we are children, then we are heirs–heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
Romans 8:17 NIV

This passage is similar.

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.
1 Peter 4:12-13 ESV

I am interested in sharing in Jesus’ glory, so I better make sure I am sharing in his sufferings. How can I do this? I don’t think reaping the results of my bad decisions counts.

Suffering by Persecution

Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,
2 Timothy 3:12 ESV

Many people have died for their faith in Jesus Christ. The persecution I have suffered is trivial by comparison. Nevertheless I have politically incorrect beliefs and have had some minor sufferings because of them. I believe humans come in two genders, male and female, marriage is between a man and a woman, and convenience abortions are murder. I’m more concerned about offending God than offending men.

“Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.”
Matthew 10:32 NIV

In fact, I start to get concerned if too many people like me. I discuss this in The Privilege of Persecution.

Suffering Because of Godly Living

First Peter has a lot to say about suffering because of living right. Here are a few verses.

But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.”
1 Peter 3:14 NIV

For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.
1 Peter 3:17 NIV

Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God. For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you; but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
1 Peter 4:1-5 ESV

Suffering Because of Wickedness

Sometimes when I see or hear something I feel very sad for the people involved. Their behavior is making it harder for them to perceive the truth, repent, and become citizens of heaven. I feel sad for them, and I feel sad for me. Unless God intervenes, judgment of America is inevitable. I love the freedoms America used to have. I don’t want to live under a worse form of government, with fewer freedoms. It just makes me sad.

And the LORD said to him, “Pass through the city, through Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations that are committed in it.”
Ezekiel 9:4 ESV

Yes, Lot was a righteous man who was tormented in his soul by the wickedness he saw and heard day after day.
2 Peter 2:8 NLT

For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
Romans 8:22-23 ESV

I expect to understand this topic better as I continue to read and study the Bible. I don’t think I have a very good handle on sharing in Christ’s sufferings. I was aware of Christians suffering, but though I had read Romans 8:17 many times, the direct link between suffering and sharing glory had never “come alive” to me before. I will keep my mind and heart open to more understanding.

For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?
1 Peter 4:17 ESV

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Watch!

The Bible tells us to keep watching!

“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.”
Matthew 24:42 NIV

Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”
Matthew 25:13 ESV

“Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning—”
Mark 13:35 ESV

Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”
Luke 21:36 NIV

So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober.
1 Thessalonians 5:6 ESV

Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you.
Revelation 3:3 ESV

The above are from Alan Horvath’s excellent YouTube video, The Most Comprehensive Rapture Update! The link is cued to when he discusses them. Here are more.

Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning, and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants! But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into. You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
Luke 12:35-40 ESV

Don’t let life distract you.

But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”
Luke 21:34-36 ESV

I believe we are the fig tree generation. Jesus is coming back!

And he told them a parable:”Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. As soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

Righteous Lot

I’m glad Lot is in the Bible. He is listed as righteous, though obviously not perfect.

For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; and if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard); then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment, and especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority.
2 Peter 2:4-10 ESV

In Genesis 13 Abram and his nephew Lot go their separate ways. They were too rich to live together. The land could not support both of them dwelling together. Lot decides to move to Sodom. This proves to be a very bad decision. I can relate. I have made bad decisions too. Later, Abram rescues his Lot.

So the enemy took all the possessions of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, and went their way. They also took Lot, the son of Abram’s brother, who was dwelling in Sodom, and his possessions, and went their way. Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, who was living by the oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and of Aner. These were allies of Abram. When Abram heard that his kinsman had been taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, 318 of them, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. And he divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and defeated them and pursued them to Hobah, north of Damascus. Then he brought back all the possessions, and also brought back his kinsman Lot with his possessions, and the women and the people.
Genesis 14:11-16 ESV

Lot continued to live in Sodom, though it bothered him greatly, 2 Peter makes clear.

Yes, Lot was a righteous man who was tormented in his soul by the wickedness he saw and heard day after day.
2 Peter 2:8 NLT

I think Lot probably had a bad marriage. In this post I talk about how I left three careers mostly for conscience. Internal turmoil can make people make major life changes. Lot was tormented by the evil, and he had been captured and taken prisoner. Why did he stay in Sodom? The reason that makes the most sense to me is his wife wanted to stay. The fact she looked back as Sodom was being destroyed and was turned into a pillar of salt is evidence of this to me.

Righteous Lot offers his virgin daughters to a homosexual mob. I don’t follow his thought process at all.

“Behold, I have two daughters who have not known any man. Let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please. Only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof.”
Genesis 19:8 ESV

Lot didn’t have much credibility with his future sons-in-law. I can relate to people not taking me seriously.

So Lot went out and said to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, “Up! Get out of this place, for the LORD is about to destroy the city.” But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be jesting.
Genesis 19:14 ESV

After the destruction of Sodom & Gomorrah Lot is afraid to live in Zoar though he has very recent, dramatic proof God will protect him. Then he chooses to get drunk and unknowingly gets his older daughter pregnant. The next night he gets drunk again and gets his younger daughter pregnant, unknowingly. I have had a little practice tipping bottles. I’m quite sure those weren’t the first two times he got drunk. Newbies tend to throw up before they get drunk enough to pass out. It takes practice to train/damage the body enough to get passed-out drunk. Righteous Lot may have had a drinking problem.

Righteous Lot. Not perfect Lot, but righteous in God’s eyes. I think about him quite a bit. I came to believe these are the end-times because of widespread wickedness, and the sorry state of planet earth’s ecology. It is nice to know I’m not the only one sick and tired — tormented — by evil.

Yes, Lot was a righteous man who was tormented in his soul by the wickedness he saw and heard day after day.
2 Peter 2:8 NLT

Righteous Lot. I’m not a Biblical genealogy expert, but it appears Lot is in Jesus’ bloodline. Lot is the father of the Moabites.

The firstborn bore a son and called his name Moab. He is the father of the Moabites to this day.
Genesis 19:37 ESV

Ruth was a Moabite.

These took Moabite wives; the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth.
Ruth 1:4 ESV

David is her great-grandson.

And the women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi.” They named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.
Ruth 4:17 ESV

David is an ancestor of Jesus.

Jesse was the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon (whose mother was Bathsheba, the widow of Uriah).
Matthew 1:6 NLT

Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Mary gave birth to Jesus, who is called the Messiah.
Matthew 1:16 NLT

Righteous Lot. Not perfect, but in the genealogy of Jesus Christ. I’m glad he’s in the Bible.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Even the Disciples Had Doubts

When I was a baby Christian I had huge doubts one night. I prayed, though I felt I might already be lost. While praying, this scripture popped into my mind and “came alive.” Every one of the disciples had doubts. Comforted, I fell asleep quickly. I remember it vividly 37+ years later. It’s my “go to” passage when I start to doubt.

Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve. And as they did eat, he said,Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?
Matthew 26:20-22 KJV

The HalleluYah Scriptures

I heard about the HalleluYah Scriptures from Scottie Clarke. I have seen him use it in his videos. I ordered a copy today. I was aware that 2 Thessalonians 2:3 is often mistranslated in 1611-and-after English versions, but I had no idea how few seem to get it right. Hopefully the HalleluYah Scriptures are more accurate. From their description they have put a lot of thought into the translation:

Due to the fact that the term “spirit” in English carries so many confusing possibilities from ghosts to alcohol, HalleluYah Scriptures renders the Spirit of Yah in it’s Hebrew form Ruaḥ or Ruaḥ ha’Qodesh.

spirits

HalleluYah Scriptures Uses The Words On The Left

Ruaḥ ha’Qodesh vs Set-apart Spirit*

Ruaḥ vs Spirit

Ruaḥoth vs Spirits

The passage that made me want to get another Bible translation deals with the end-times.

Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
2 Thessalonians 2:1-4 KJV

The verse that is the subject of the rest of this post.

Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
2 Thessalonians 2:3 KJV

The passage is important because it is talking about things that indicate “the day of Christ.” Prior to the KJV, the English translations used words that meant the rapture of the church. With the KJV and most translations after, the text talks about the falling away of the church. That is a big, big difference. My conclusion is rapture is much more likely to be the correct interpretation.

I read the Red Moon Rapture blog. This quote comes from the post That Day Will Not Come Until… I suggest you read the whole post.

The Greek noun apostasia is only used twice in the New Testament. In addition to 2 Thessalonians 2:3, it occurs in Acts 21:21 where, speaking of Paul, it is said, “that you are teaching all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake (apostasia)Moses.” The word is a Greek compound of apo ” from” and istemi “stand.” Thus, it has the core meaning of “away from” or “departure.” The Liddell and Scott Greek Lexicon defines apostasia first as “defection, revolt;” then secondly as “departure, disappearance.”[1]

What precisely does Paul mean when he says that “the falling away” (2:3) must come before the tribulation? The definite article “the” denotes that this will be a definite event, an event distinct from the appearance of the Man of Sin. The Greek word for “falling away”, taken by itself, does not mean religious apostasy or defection. Neither does the word mean “to fall,” as the Greeks have another word for that. [pipto, I fall; TDI] The best translation of the word is “to depart.” The apostle Paul refers here to a definite event which he calls “the departure,” and which will occur just before the start of the tribulation. This is the rapture of the church.[4]

So the word has the core meaning of departure and it depends upon the context to determine whether it is used to mean physical departure or an abstract departure such as departure from the faith.

This is a screen capture of BibleHub. Most translations use words similar to rebellion, apostasy and falling away. Only two use the departureImage

2 Thess 2_3 Beza Latin

IMO 2 Thessalonians 2:3 is talking about the departure of the church, the rapture. It is true that there appears to be a great falling away from faith. But when I think on this meaning nothing much happens on my inside. When I think about the departure of the church, however, I get excited and happy on the inside. I think the Spirit Himself is bearing witness with my spirit. 🙂

Leaping Like Calves From the Stall

I suppose most Christians have heard or read the verse about how we will go out leaping like calves released from an enclosure.

But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall.
Malachi 4:2 ESV

But if you haven’t spent time around cattle, you probably have no idea of the complete exuberance this verse implies. I will attempt to describe it. Once upon a time my children were young, and for years I helped in preschool Sunday School classes. Broadly speaking, two and three year old human children have four states.

  • Sleeping. Don’t they look darling? 🙂
  • Crisis. They fell down or pinched their fingers or something. For them in this state, there is no problem in the universe more important than what has just happened. Mom, dad, or whoever needs to interrupt what they’re doing and provide comfort.
  • Concentration. I have tried to avoid letting my brain harden as so many adults have. As a lesson in how to think I have often watched youngsters discovering their world.
  • Overwhelming zest for life. At times, they are just bursting with happiness at being alive. They may run here and there, arms waving, and laughing. They may slip their feet into an adult’s shoes and run around quacking or meowing. In a classroom, whole groups may suddenly get happy all at the same time and run around in clusters. They are glad to be alive and are determined to show it by moving around and laughing.

Now imagine this same exhilaration, this same high-spirited behavior, in an animal weighing perhaps 40 to 100 pounds, and capable of running perhaps 30 mph.

You can be trying to drive a herd of cows and calves, and all of a sudden, one of the calves will just start running. Others may join in and they go tearing off in the distance, running and jumping. I have seen a group running flat out straight away from me suddenly decide to change and the group, one by one, peel off at 90 degrees, then 90 degrees again, come running straight back in my direction. Their movements make no sense. They’re not supposed to. They’re just having fun.

It can be a lot of fun to watch. Unless you’re trying to get the herd to a specific place by a specific time. Then their exuberant hijinks can be quite frustrating, as illustrated in the photo above. This calf was nearly in the corral when he decided, “Nope! I have some important running around to do!” And off he went.

But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall.
Malachi 4:2 ESV

Take the happiest, bounciest, bubbliest three year-old you have ever seen. Add the strength, grace and agility of Olympic-class high-hurdlers. Then add the complete abandon of someone who has never even had the thought of caring what others are thinking while he or she is dancing. This is the beginning of the excitement of calves released from a stall. God wants us to be happy, and enjoy being happy!
