Bang! — The Big Bang Theory

I love the dialogue in the early episodes of The Big Bang Theory. A sentence expresses a complete thought. Sometimes the script’s sentences are long and complex, and sometimes they are short and to the point.

Sheldon: Ah, yes, well that may be the proximal cause of our journey, but we both know it only exists in contradistinction to the higher level distal cause.

Leonard: Which is?

Sheldon: You think with your penis.

I was one of the people who “got this” the first time. I then laughed at myself for missing the obvious punchline.

Leonard: What did Penny mean, you’d make a cute couple?

Sheldon: Well I assume she meant that the two of you together would constitute a couple that others might consider cute. An alternate, and somewhat less likely interpretation, is that you could manufacture one. As in, oh look, Leonard and Lesley made Mr and Mrs Goldfarb, aren’t they adorable.

Leonard: If Penny didn’t know that Lesley had already turned me down then that would unambiguously mean that she, Penny, thought that I should her, Lesley, out, indicating that she, Penny, had no interest in me asking her, Penny, out. But because she did know that I had asked Lesley out and that she, Lesley, had turned me down then she, Penny, could be offering consolation. That’s too bad, you would have made a cute couple. But while thinking, good, Leonard remains available.

Sheldon: You’re a lucky man, Leonard.

Leonard: How so?

Sheldon: You’re talking to one of the three men in the Western hemisphere capable of following that train of thought.

Leonard: Well, what do you think.

Sheldon: I said I could follow it, I didn’t say I cared.

The writers put a lot of work into the early episodes. I could believe Sheldon and Leonard had a combined IQ of 360. The style of speech matched some very smart people I have known. Short sentences slapping sentences Dickens would have to read thrice, with humor so dry it’s a fire hazard. Brilliant!

Leonard: Excuse me, if I were to give up at the first little hitch I never would have been able to identify the fingerprints of string theory in the aftermath of the big bang.

Sheldon: My apologies. What’s your plan.

(Leonard starts rattling the doors violently.)

Sheldon: It’s just a privilege to watch your mind at work.

Leonard: Come on, we have a combined IQ of 360, we should be able to figure out how to get into a stupid building.

(Two girl scouts arrive carrying bags of cookies. One runs her hand down the intercom, pushing all the buttons. The door is buzzed open.)

Sheldon: What do you think their combined IQ is?

Leonard: Just grab the door.

In later seasons the writers phoned it in, somewhat. The writing is not as good. But they added a couple smart, pretty girls, who are somewhat ignorant of their areas of incompetence. So the series stayed entertaining for me.

The Big Bang Theory became the DVD version of my Rex Stout Nero Wolfe paperback “sleeping pills.” Sometimes when I lie down for the night the hamsters in my brain are running 100 miles per hour in their wheels-to-nowhere, and I know sleep is at least a couple hours away. But if I give the hamsters something familiar, they get out of the wheels and lie down. I’ve read most of the Nero Wolfe books. I know them very well. But I like the writing, so I don’t mind rereading them. It’s familiar. I can fall asleep quickly while reading them, right in the middle of a paragraph, the hamsters having fallen asleep too.

I prefer to fall asleep in a dark room. But on nights when my brain was going and going, I’d put in a The Big Bang Theory DVD. With the volume very low (I know the dialog) the hamsters and I would usually be sawing logs before the 3rd episode.

But my own writing is convicting me. The setting of TBBT is modern. The characters have no objection to sex outside of marriage. In I Don’t Watch CNN I wrote about the importance of what we see and hear. By watching TBBT I was programming myself to fail via Lemming Theology. Fortunately I woke up in time and repented. I knew better, but did it anyway — like Adam I sinned with my eyes wide open. I ignored Romans 12:2, which is especially easy to understand in the Phillips translation.

Don’t let the world around you squeeze you into its own mould, but let God re-mould your minds from within, so that you may prove in practice that the plan of God for you is good, meets all his demands and moves towards the goal of true maturity.
Romans 12:2 Phillips

When I got saved in 1979 I had a lot of rock albums. I got rid of them. I’m going to do the same with my TBBT DVDs. Like the rock music, I can’t give them away: “Here. Have some mental poison to help you on your journey to eternal damnation.” Just getting rid of bad stuff is Biblical.

A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas.
Acts 19:19 NIV

Hebrews 12:14 is an interesting verse. Many translations use the word “holiness,” which connotes to me a state, a condition in which I play perhaps a minor part, if any. There is no one English language. Each of us has our own unique dialect.

Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: Hebrews 12:14 KVJ

To me, sanctification suggests that I have a large role to play in the process the Lord uses to get Him reflected in me, for the benefit of others.

Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord.
Hebrews 12:14 NAS-1977

When I’m digging, I turn to the Amplified Bible.

Continually pursue peace with everyone, and the sanctification without which no one will [ever] see the Lord.
HEBREWS 12:14 Amplified

The Classic version uses consecration, which connotes to me the necessity of actions on my part that border on downright painful! It also has “and holiness,” confirming to me that there is a difference between consecration and holiness. Consecration is more what I do. Holiness is more the result. It’s “tion” v “ness.” Action v State.

Strive to live in peace with everybody and pursue that consecration and holiness without which no one will [ever] see the Lord.
Hebrews 12:14 Amplified, Classic

The greek is interesting. Which leads to hagiasmos, and has this definition.

Definition: the process of making or becoming holy, set apart, sanctification, holiness, consecration.

Ah ha! It is a process! The word holiness connotes a more passive activity to me. Sanctification is a more accurate word in the Mark Jerde Dialect of American English.

In Bible Reading & Bible Study I say that I can spend a lot of time in Bible study, but not cover very much of the Bible. I thought I’d provide a sample. 🙂

Postscript. I took action. It wasn’t trivial.

You Always Have Time For What You Do First

Someday, each of us will run out of time. The Bible has a lot to say about using time wisely.

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
Psalm 90:12 NIV

Seeking the Father’s kingdom and His Righteousness is job one.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Matthew 6:33 NIV

There isn’t time to do everything. Chose the highest priority.

“There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:42 NLT

Successful people in the Bible seemed to have good habits.

Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.
Daniel 6:10 NIV

The psalmist prayed and listened for answers in the morning.

In the morning, LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.
Psalm 5:3 NIV

If we are to pray for our daily bread, it stands to reason the rest of the Lord’s Prayer should be prayed daily too.

One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” He said to them,“When you pray, say:  ‘Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation. ’ ”
Luke 11:1-4 NIV

Seeking God’s wisdom is to be a daily thing, not a once-a-week-on-Sunday thing. Here is a tip for regularly reading the Bible if you’re not doing it.

Blessed are those who listen to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway.
Proverbs 8:34 NIV

Discipleship is a daily decision.

Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”
Luke 9:23 NIV

I need to keep working on doing the most important things. I am noticing that I’m having less time for Sudoku when I start my day with prayer.

There. I wrote this for my benefit instead of continuing to surf the internet. 🙂

Yawn. Boring. Sowing/Reaping. Action/Reaction. Goes-Around/Comes-Around. Karma. Too, Too Predictable!

Why do so many people act surprised by news articles? Are they that ignorant? Do they imagine stuff “just happens”? Is the earth still here? Yes, so this verse is still in effect.

As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.”
Genesis 8:22 NIV

God is not mocked. Reaping always follows sowing.

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.
Galatians 6:7 NIV

God really does want everyone to have a happy, joyful life.

Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD.
Psalm 33:12 NIV

But, for a nation whose “god” is not the Lord Almighty, should it expect to be blessed? No.

Today, right here and now, is America a “Christian nation”? I’m not talking about your grandma’s America, or how we wish America was, or what we think America is if we close our eyes really tight, shove our fingers in our ears, and shout “La! La! La!” till the cows come home. Is America, right now, today, a “Christian nation”? Remember, it only takes one turd in the punchbowl.

A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.
Galatians 5:9 NIV

Not 1776, not 1850, not 1912, not 1945, but today, is America a “Christian nation”? God hates murder. It’s in His Top-Ten List. Would a “Christian nation” have murdered 59,598,324 of its pre-born since 1973? No.

Not 1776, not 1850, not 1912, not 1945, but today, is America a “Christian nation”? Would a “Christian nation” use tax money to teach there are more genders than the male and female that God created? No.

He created them male and female and blessed them. And he named them “Mankind” when they were created.
Genesis 5:2 NIV

Woe, woe, woe! to those who cause believing children to stumble! Jesus said you’ll wish you had committed suicide.

“But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!”
Matthew 18:6-7 KJV

There are no political solutions to spiritual problems. If we don’t fix this, America is going to puke.

“ ‘Do not give any of your children to be sacrificed to Molek, for you must not profane the name of your God. I am the LORD.
“ ‘Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.
“ ‘Do not have sexual relations with an animal and defile yourself with it. A woman must not present herself to an animal to have sexual relations with it; that is a perversion.
“ ‘Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you became defiled. Even the land was defiled; so I punished it for its sin, and the land vomited out its inhabitants. But you must keep my decrees and my laws. The native-born and the foreigners residing among you must not do any of these detestable things, for all these things were done by the people who lived in the land before you, and the land became defiled. And if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it vomited out the nations that were before you.‘”
Leviticus 18:21-28 NIV

God loves you, and doesn’t want you to reap the fruit of the sin you have sown.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:23 NIV

Soon it will be too late. Seek God now!

The Friendship Pyramid

Perhaps my high school was unique, but we had various cliques. There were the cowboys and the jocks. I was a nerd, one of those who took more math and science than was absolutely required for graduation. The groups were generally friendly; this was the 1970’s after all. Most boys always had a pocket knife (I did), and there were rifles and shotguns in the gun racks of the pickup trucks in the parking lots. But somehow we managed not to stab and shoot each other. Not even in the occasional but regular testosterone-fueled fights that broke out around the school grounds.

By and large, friendship were only with members of the same groups. There were exceptions — one of my good friends was a cowboy. Between groups, relationships varied from friendly to acquaintanceship, the exception being the very small group of druggies. With that group relationships varied from unfriendly to downright hostile, at least from my vantage point. But they didn’t matter much. They skipped school a lot, and were not in the elective math and science classes.

During the summer between my junior and senior year of high school I went on a week-long hiking and camping trip in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The hikers came from a wide area, but there was one guy from my school. He was not a nerd. So I was a little surprised we became very good friends on that trip. We talked a lot and had a good time together. Back in school in the fall, I guess we both thought the friendship would continue. But our first conversation was the last. “Hi!” “Hello!” “Done any camping lately?” “No, you?” “No.” (Uncomfortable silence.) “Well, bye.” “See you.” From then on we just nodded at each other in the hallways.

In the Army I developed a lot of very close, intensely-intimate friendships with other soldiers, out playing “Army” in the woods for a week. There is something about helping others get though a swamp at night, carrying M16 rifles and M60 machine guns, trying to stay dry above the armpits in 35-degree temperatures, that really demolishes the barriers of getting to know someone. Add to that shared misery, not showering for a week and victory in war games, and you have a whole group of happy, stinky people passing around pocket notebooks in which to write their permanent addresses.

Everyone, everyone, everyone always promises to write. No one ever does.

In my recent “time in the desert” I thought on these things, as well as my failed marriage. I have distilled the essence into the pictured friendship pyramid. I’m not sure the pyramid is fully correct or complete, but it’s what I have for now. From the top:

  1. True Intimacy. I want to have at least one friend who knows me intimately, who knows me as well as I know myself — maybe better. If I’m screwing up big time, like stealing or watching porn, this person could sit down and talk to me, and I’d listen. We would be that close.
  2. Genuine Friendship. These are people with whom I could talk about anything. Or not talk at all. Silences with these people are not strained.
  3. Comfortable Familiarity. Conversations with people at this level of friendship are pleasant, but are limited to topics relatively unimportant. Silences may start comfortable, but become uncomfortable.
  4. Shared Experience. I think you have to do things together in order to have a friendship. I also think it needs to continue. Two people sitting in a room, each surfing the web and checking Facebook, may be spending time together, but IMO this does not count as a shared experience.
  5. TIME Together. If I don’t spend sufficient time with someone, the higher levels of the pyramid are impossible to get to with that person. If someone is already at a higher level in the pyramid and we do not spend sufficient time together, the relationship will fail. I think this concept is 100% B.S. —>> “We only have 15 minutes together, so let’s make them quality minutes.”

This is how I came to realize how the close friendships I had with my high school pal, my Army buddies, and even my wife, came to ruin. Without TIME Together, there can be no Shared Experience. Without Shared Experience, there can be no Comfortable Familiarity. Without Comfortable Familiarity there can be no Genuine Friendship. And without Genuine Friendship, there can be no True Intimacy, the true, satisfying goal at the very top of the pyramid. All friendship is therefore based on spending time together doing things!

Given the nature of this blog, I need to relate the pyramid to a relationship with God. But I’m not quite ready yet. I’m getting closer. A few months ago, like Puzzle in The Last Battle, I was sorta hoping to just sneak into heaven and hope the Lord didn’t see me. Now I’m feeling much more confident to meet the Lord face-to-face, but I’m still a bit apprehensive. Some would say that’s a good thing.  🙂

I haven’t reached this level yet.

Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request.
1 Chronicles 4:10 NIV

I’m certainly not at this level!

The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the LORD. Then Abraham approached him and said: “Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked? What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it? Far be it from you to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?” The LORD said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”

The Big Five-Oh!

This is my 50th blog post, and I’d like to reflect a bit. I am aware that, by attempting to teach, I’m setting myself up for greater judgment. I wrote a whole post about the danger.

Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.
James 3:1 NIV

I am aware of the need to not think I know it all, but to be teachable.

Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid.
Proverbs 12:1 NIV

I have received the first potentially-negative comments on a post. I haven’t decided if they’re valid correction or persecution. The poster may be right, or it could be like Satan quoting scripture to Jesus. I haven’t decided.

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

Jesus answered,“It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:

“ ‘He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus answered him,“It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”

Jesus said to him,“Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”

Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
Matthew 4:1-11 NIV

Satan knows the Word, but he doesn’t understand it.

None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
1 Corinthians 2:8 NIV

It takes the Holy Spirit to understand scripture.

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
John 16:13 NIV

I’m going to keep plugging away, believing my work is not in vain!

Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Christians! Start Your Blogs!

A funny thing happened while I was writing a blog post draft. The post draws mostly on my farm/ranch experience growing up. I expected very little “new” information to be in the post. Yet as I was sitting behind the keyboard, trying to assemble the right words in the right order, I noticed some new threads of thought forming in my mind. One rapidly thickened into a rather large rope. I now have better understanding God and His desired relationship with mankind. I also have a little more to ponder when I consider one of my “great” unanswered questions, why God allows evil.

The simple act of trying to write readably brought new understanding, new revelation.

I have changed my mind. Writing for other’s benefit is not just a good way of meditating on the Word of God. It is the best way I have found for meditating on the Word of God. I urge all Christians to blog. I’m sure you’ll find out, as I have, that it is the best way to find out what you know. And to realize new things you didn’t know!

I have been blogging sporadically since 2004. So when I started this blog I thought I knew what I was doing. I took time to set up categories for my expected posts. Turns out I was wrong. I didn’t need all those categories. The blog has gone a different direction from what I thought it would. I expect to be writing on the other topics during the millennial kingdom. The posts for now, are for now.

My advice is you start a blog, and just write posts. Choose topics of interest to you. At the beginning, don’t worry about categories, tags, themes, menus or images. Just write and post. You can add all the other stuff later, as you gain experience. I didn’t add tags until I had 28 posts up, and needed to find faster ways to find what I had written. I didn’t add the site header images until a couple days ago. You don’t need perfection to begin.

This is a procedure I use to discover some topics for my blog posts. I look through Facebook posts, looking for posts on which I want to comment. When I click Reply I pause. If I want to write more than two sentences, I consider the possibility of the reply being a blog post topic. One of my goals is to write relevant posts, and this is one way I do it.

Start blogging! And post links to your posts! I look forward to reading what you have written. 🙂

The Chronicles of Narnia

I am honestly jealous of you if you haven’t read The Chronicles of Narnia by Clive Staples Lewis. You have the joy of reading them for the first time in front of you. I don’t. Somewhat unwillingly, on the advice of a college friend, I read the first of these so-called “Children’s books,” The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. 48 hours later I had wolfishly consumed all seven, electing to stay up all night to finish the last four! They are delightful, and have meaning for adults as well as children. Good old C.S. managed to cram a lot of solid theology into a delicious, easy-to-digest banquet.

Put them on your bucket list if you haven’t read them, and check it off before you kick the bucket.

I took my volume of all seven stories off the shelf to reread The Last Battle recently, after Facebook did to me what it sometimes does. In that Facebook session I encountered article after article after article of people, seemingly willfully, doing everything they could to tick God off and hasten their own destruction. I was somewhat bummed out. The Last Battle is C.S.’s allegory of evil, deception, and the end of the age. In the book evil thinks it is winning, but in the end it is sadly mistaken. I reread the book to clean the end-time prophetic glasses I choose to wear to view the world and its events.

Put reading The Chronicles of Narnia on your bucket list if you haven’t read them.

Which story is my favorite? Tough call. The one I’ve probably read the most times is The Horse and His Boy, but The Silver Chair and The Last Battle aren’t far behind. I recommend all seven very highly!

The Shepherd of the Hills

My 150 shelf-feet of books have shrunk drastically in recent years, as a result of my rather nomadic life. But I still tote around two books by one of my favorite authors, Harold Bell Wright. From the wikipedia page.

Harold Bell Wright (May 4, 1872 – May 24, 1944) was a best-selling American writer of fiction, essays, and nonfiction.[1] Although mostly forgotten or ignored after the middle of the 20th century, he is said to have been the first American writer to sell a million copies of a novel and the first to make $1 million from writing fiction.[citation needed] Between 1902 and 1942 Wright wrote 19 books,[2] several stage plays, and many magazine articles. More than 15 movies were made or claimed to be made from Wright’s stories, including Gary Cooper‘s first major movie, The Winning of Barbara Worth (1926)[2] and the John Wayne film The Shepherd of the Hills (1941).

There are several things I like about his books. They tend to be rather romantic, with happy endings. I don’t mind that. The Bible itself ends well for the saved. But it is not a standard formula in his books. The hero doesn’t always get the girl. In one of his books one of the good guys chooses to risk his life to help one of the bad guys, and dies as a result. I think he wrote with an internal eternal perspective, and is now a citizen of heaven.

I think what I liked the most about his writing was I learned people haven’t really changed, just our technology has. I somehow had the impression as a youngster that people were different before TVs, radios and refrigerators. HBW taught me they were not. Some of his observations of people have stayed sharp in my mind for 40 years, like this gem:

For the legal aspect of the case, James Rutlidge had all the indifference of his kind, who imbibe contempt for law with their mother’s milk.

That could be said of some people in Facebook posts today, eh? You didn’t need a cell phone to be a dirtbag.

His most well-known book is The Shepherd of the Hills. I have seen modern reprints of this book for sale in Christian bookstores. To my complete surprise, I find I prefer reading electronic books on my iPad instead of the paperback versions. The iPad is a little heavier, but my thumbs don’t get sore from holding the book open. Plus, my eyes became operational when Ike was president, and need brighter light for reading now than in times past. The iPad supplies its own light. 🙂 The Shepherd of the Hills is available as a free download at Gutenberg. I suggest you read it if you haven’t.

Dear Internet Pastor / Teacher

Dear Sir(s) and/or Ma’am(s),

I very much like your ministry. I get a lot out of your YouTube channel and/or podcasts and/or website and/or eNewsletter and/or (whatever). However, I am having difficulty communicating with you. I am creating this blog post as a place to start with all current comm difficulties, as well as those that may occur in the future.

I want to emphasize that I am not offended by the communication problems. I have been a Christian long enough this verse is true of me. … Well, mostly true. I suspect if you really tried, you could find some way to make me feel later that I have a need to repent.  😉

Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.
Psalm 119:165 KJV

I was an officer in the US Army. Later I was a Chief Technical Officer (CTO) for over 10 years. Please consider this some free management consulting. This is the problem, as briefly yet accurately as I can write it.

I followed your protocols for contacting you. I have not heard back from you. I am not harmed by the communication failure. I am concerned that pre-Christians and young Christians could be at risk from similar failures. I recommend you fix these problems. I am happy to help in any way I can.

Here are some additional facts.

  • With around 30 years of computer experience, I am well aware of the need of accurate email addresses. In all cases I am very sure my email address was entered correctly. In cases where the failed communication was part of a transaction (donation or purchase), I always received the expected emailed receipt. This confirmed my address was entered correctly in these instances.
  • Some of the failed communications have been part of a donation or purchase. In the comments block of the donation I entered text requesting some form of response. It has been at least a week since my request. I have received no response at all. No, your response is not in my spam folder.
  • Some of the failed communications have been contact forms I filled out and submitted on your web site. It has been at least a week and I have received no response. Yes, I am sure my email address was entered correctly. If your contact form had a “Send me a copy of the submission” checkbox, I checked the checkbox, and received an emailed copy of what I submitted. No, your response is not in my spam folder.
  • Some of the failed communication has been through Twitter. In your materials, be they YouTube, web site, or whatever, you stated you were available for communication by Twitter. In all cases, I first searched for you on Twitter. I found you. I then used Twitter’s automatic means of specifying the @whatever. I did not copy/paste or type. Twitter entered your @whatever into the draft Tweet. In all cases I sent you a Tweet. I confirmed the Tweet was in my list of Tweets. I waited at least a day, but received no response. I could see you were Tweeting. In all cases I sent a second tweet, using the automatic means of entering @whatever, I verified the Tweet had been sent, I verified you were Tweeting, and I received no response. It has been at least a day, and you have Tweeted since I Tweeted you. Your statement, in voice and/or text, that you are available for contact via Twitter, is false in my case.

With all my years of experience, I know problems happen. I am glad to help solve them any way I can. For your convenience, this is a link to my Contact page. Yes, I have tested my contact page. It works.  😉

Sincerely,

Mark Jerde

Disputes Over Nothing

The Bible teaches that sometimes it is ok to agree to disagree. Both sides are right.

One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind. Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord. Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God; and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. For none of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us dies for ourselves alone. If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.
Romans 14:5-8 NIV

I hate disputes over nothing of value.

Keep reminding God’s people of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen.
2 Timothy 2:14 NIV

Despite my best efforts, I do sometimes get sucked into an internet comment thread where it seems to me one of the other parties is not reading what I’m writing — with the intent to understand what I’ve written. Yes, I know that is only my viewpoint.

Fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight in airing their own opinions.
Proverbs 18:2 NIV

From my point of view, these people are not doing Habit 5 from Stephen R. Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

HABIT 5: SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD

I do try to recall the Golden Rule.

“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”
Matthew‬ ‭7:12‬ ‭NIV

I try to completely ignore the trivial, and forgive and forget the more important.

A person’s wisdom yields patience; it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense.
Proverbs 19:11 NIV

I try to do my part to live in peace.

If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
Romans 12:18 NIV

But there are some people from whom I just have to walk away.

Stay away from a fool, for you will not find knowledge on their lips.
Proverbs 14:7 NIV

Are you following God's plan for your life?
   You should.
      Your plan sucks.
      It really, really sucks.
      Suckage Maximus.

Most people are WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!

Jesus is coming.
Are you ready to meet Him?
Give your life to Jesus Christ.
   Time is running out.
