A Little Bit About Suffering

I have been praying God’s Psalms 91 protection for a long time, so why was I assaulted and hospitalized? Well, Jesus promised we would have problems during this life.

These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.
John 16:33 NKJV

Jesus learned obedience through the things He suffered.

So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him:

“You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.”

As He also says in another place:

“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek”;

who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear, 8 though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, 10 called by God as High Priest “according to the order of Melchizedek,”
Hebrews 5:5-10 NKJV

Paul had a bunch of problems.

22 Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they the seed of Abraham? So am I. 23 Are they ministers of Christ?—I speak as a fool—I am more: in labors more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequently, in deaths often. 24 From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep; 26 in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; 27 in weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness— 28 besides the other things, what comes upon me daily: my deep concern for all the churches. 29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to stumble, and I do not burn with indignation?
2 Corinthians 11:22-29 NKJV

Difficulties are just part of this life.

Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
But the Lord delivers him out of them all.
Psalm 34:19 NKJV

But in the light of eternity, they aren’t a big deal.

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed— 10 always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. 11 For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus’ sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12 So then death is working in us, but life in you.

13 And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed and therefore I spoke,” we also believe and therefore speak, 14 knowing that He who raised up the Lord Jesus will also raise us up with Jesus, and will present us with you. 15 For all things are for your sakes, that grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God.

16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, 18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
2 Corinthians 4:7-18 NKJV

Don’t forget Jesus’ motivation! The joy of saving us got Him through His trials.

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:1-2 NKJV

There is a coming reaping.

11 This is a faithful saying:

For if we died with Him,
We shall also live with Him.
12 If we endure,
We shall also reign with Him.
If we deny Him,
He also will deny us.
13 If we are faithless,
He remains faithful;
He cannot deny Himself.
2 Timothy 2:11-13 NKJV

Jesus is coming very soon. Be ready!

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.
1 Thessalonians 5:4-6 NKJV

32 “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors! 34 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”
Matthew 24:32-35 NKJV

34 But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. 35 For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.

Affliction Tests Obedience

God allows difficulties, tests, trials, and afflictions to find out if we will obey Him.

Now these are the nations which the Lord left, that He might test Israel by them, that is, all who had not known any of the wars in Canaan (this was only so that the generations of the children of Israel might be taught to know war, at least those who had not formerly known it), namely, five lords of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who dwelt in Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon to the entrance of Hamath. And they were left, that He might test Israel by them, to know whether they would obey the commandments of the Lord, which He had commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
Judges 3:1-4 NKJV

The Psalmist passed his tests.

This is my comfort in my affliction,
For Your word has given me life.
Psalm 119:50 NKJV

Before I was afflicted I went astray,
But now I keep Your word.
Psalms 119:67 NKJV

It is good for me that I have been afflicted,
That I may learn Your statutes.
Psalms 119:71 NKJV

I know, O Lord, that Your judgments are right,
And that in faithfulness You have afflicted me.
Psalms 119:75 NKJV

Unless Your law had been my delight,
I would then have perished in my affliction.
Psalm 119:92 NKJV

I am afflicted very much;
Revive me, O Lord, according to Your word.
Psalm 119:107 NKJV

Consider my affliction and deliver me,
For I do not forget Your law.
Psalm 119:153 NKJV

Israel as a whole failed.

Thus the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons; and they served their gods.

So the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord. They forgot the Lord their God, and served the Baals and Asherahs.
Judges 3:5-7 NKJV

May I follow Jesus’ example, not Israel’s!

who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear, though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.
Hebrews 5:7-8 NKJV

Getting Through Trials

James tells us to consider trials pure joy, because trials have a purpose – our perfection.

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.
James 1:2-4 NKJV

Like refining gold and silver to get rid of the impurities, trials get rid of junk in us.

The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold,
But the Lord tests the hearts.
Proverbs 17:3 NKJV

I agree with the Psalmist. God’s promises get me through my trials, especially the promise of eternal life.

Unless Your law had been my delight,
I would then have perished in my affliction.
Psalm 119:92 NKJV

14 “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
John 3:14-17 NKJV

It takes faith to please God.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
Hebrews 11:6 NKJV

It helps me to know that everything isn’t likely to work out well in this life in this sinful, evil world.

13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14 For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. 15 And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.
Hebrews 11:13-16 NKJV

Therefore I am setting my mind on the things above, on eternal life!

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 NKJV

10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
2 Peter 3:10-13 NKJV

If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.
Colossians 3:1-4 NKJV

Jesus is coming very soon. Be ready!

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

When Does the Christian Life Get Easy?

When does the Christian life get easy? After we graduate into the new heaven and the new earth.

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among the people, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.
Revelation 21:1-4 NASB

Until then we are in a war.

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Ephesians 6:10-12 NASB

He trains my hands for battle,
So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
Psalm 18:34 NASB

Blessed be the Lord, my rock,
Who trains my hands for war,
And my fingers for battle;
Psalm 144:1 NASB

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not wage battle according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses.
2 Corinthians 10:3-4 NASB

Suffering was part of the Father’s plan for Jesus.

Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered.
Hebrews 5:8 NASB

Therefore we shouldn’t be surprised when we go through some suffering.

12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though something strange were happening to you; 13 but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that at the revelation of His glory you may also rejoice and be overjoyed.
1 Peter 4:12-13 NASB

10 For You have put us to the test, God;
You have refined us as silver is refined.
11 You brought us into the net;
You laid an oppressive burden upon us.
12 You made men ride over our heads;
We went through fire and through water.
Yet You brought us out into a place of abundance.
Psalm 66:10-12 NASB

James says we should consider trials joy. I don’t think I’m quite there yet. 😉

Consider it all joy, my brothers and sisters, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
James 1:2-4 NASB

During affliction and suffering, we can have sweet fellowship with Jesus.

I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to Him in His death,
Philippians 3:10 BSB

Psalms 119 has a lot to say about affliction.

50 This is my comfort in my misery,
That Your word has revived me.

67 Before I was afflicted I went astray,
But now I keep Your word.

71 It is good for me that I was afflicted,
So that I may learn Your statutes.

75 I know, Lord, that Your judgments are righteous,
And that You have afflicted me in faithfulness.

92 If Your Law had not been my delight,
Then I would have perished in my misery.

107 I am exceedingly afflicted;
Revive me, Lord, according to Your word.

153 Look at my affliction and rescue me,
For I have not forgotten Your Law.
Psalm 119:50, 67, 71, 75, 92, 107, 153 NASB

Many are the afflictions, and many are the deliverances.

The afflictions of the righteous are many,
But the Lord rescues him from them all.
Psalm 34:19 NASB

So let us hang in there. Our sufferings are doing us eternal good.

16 Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer person is decaying, yet our inner person is being renewed day by day. 17 For our momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, 18 while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18 NASB

Jesus is coming very soon. Be ready!

Affliction and Suffering – Expect Heat!

I might wish it wasn’t so, but God uses difficulties to refine us.

The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold,
But the Lord tests the hearts.
Proverbs 17:3 NKJV

21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch, 22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying,We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God.
Acts 14:21-22 NKJV

Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
But the Lord delivers him out of them all.
Psalm 34:19 NKJV

For You, O God, have tested us;
You have refined us as silver is refined.
11 You brought us into the net;
You laid affliction on our backs.
12 You have caused men to ride over our heads;
We went through fire and through water;
But You brought us out to rich fulfillment.
Psalm 66:10-12 NKJV

Jesus said we would have both problems and victory over them.

These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.
John 16:33 NKJV

What is the overcoming? Our faith!

For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
1 John 5:4-5 NKJV

Faith is important because it is how we please God.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
Hebrews 11:6 NKJV

I’m not on James’ level yet, where I count problems “all joy,” but I’m meditating about it.

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.
James 1:2-4 NKJV

Peter wrote that fiery trials aren’t strange, but expected.

12 Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; 13 but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. 14 If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified. 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people’s matters. 16 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter.

17 For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 Now

“If the righteous one is scarcely saved,
Where will the ungodly and the sinner appear?”

19 Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator.
1 Peter 4:12-19 NKJV

God will not let us be tempted beyond what we can stand!

No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
1 Corinthians 10:13 NKJV

Let’s keep our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.

After all, Jesus learned though His suffering.

though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.
Hebrews 5:8 NKJV

I’ll finish with what Psalms 119 has to say about affliction.

50 This is my comfort in my affliction,
For Your word has given me life.

67 Before I was afflicted I went astray,
But now I keep Your word.

71 It is good for me that I have been afflicted,
That I may learn Your statutes.

75 I know, O Lord, that Your judgments are right,
And that in faithfulness You have afflicted me.

92 Unless Your law had been my delight,

107 I am afflicted very much;
Revive me, O Lord, according to Your word.

153 Consider my affliction and deliver me,
For I do not forget Your law.
Psalm 119:50, 67, 71, 75, 92, 107, 153 NKJV

Jesus is coming very soon. Be ready!

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

We Are In A War!

It was God’s plan that Israel have problems to overcome.

Judges 3:1-4 NKJV

Tests and trials are mandatory.

10 For You, O God, have tested us;

11 You brought us into the net;

Psalm 34:19 NKJV

16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.
Romans 8:16-17 NKJV

Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
2 Timothy 3:12 NKJV

21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch, 22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying,We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God.
Acts 14:21-22 NKJV

In fact, trials are good for us.

And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
Romans 5:3-5 NKJV

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.
James 1:2-4 NKJV

It is good for me that I have been afflicted,
That I may learn Your statutes.
Psalm 119:71 NKJV

Make sure you are able to stand. I put on the whole armor of God at least twice a day.

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Ephesians 6:13 NKJV

Fight the good fight.

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds,
2 Corinthians 10:3-4 NKJV

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Ephesians 6:10-13 NKJV

He teaches my hands to make war,
So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
Psalm 18:34 NKJV

Blessed be the LORD my Rock,
Who trains my hands for war,
And my fingers for battle—
Psalm 144:1 NKJV

It’s called a good fight because we win!

These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.
John 16:33 NKJV

You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
1 John 4:4 NKJV

Jesus is coming soon.

Luke 21:34-36 NKJV

Looking To Jesus, The Author And Finisher Of Our Faith

I have often heard this Scripture fragment used like we can relax and just let Jesus handle stuff. I have used it that way myself I’m sure.

looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith,
Hebrews 12:2 NKJV

But a few days ago it struck me the whole context is about persevering when things are rough!

It’s like this passage from James.

Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.
James 1:12 BSB

There is much in Hebrews 12 about persevering. You may want to spend some time in that chapter if you haven’t recently.

Jesus is coming soon.

Life Is Not Always Easy

Some days it’s good to remind myself this life isn’t promised to be easy.

These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33 NKJV

13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.”
Matthew 7:13-14 NKJV

It is also good for me to remember Jesus’ example.

Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered.
Hebrews 5:8 NASB

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:2 BSB

Speaking of joy, James said to have joy in trials, as they have a beneficial result.

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.
James 1:2-4 NKJV

Psalms 119 also speaks of the benefit of difficulties.

49 Remember the word to Your servant,
Upon which You have caused me to hope.
50 This is my comfort in my affliction,
For Your word has given me life.

67 Before I was afflicted I went astray,
But now I keep Your word.

75 I know, O Lord, that Your judgments are right,
And that in faithfulness You have afflicted me.

92 Unless Your law had been my delight,
I would then have perished in my affliction.
Psalm 119:49-50, 67, 75, 92 NKJV

Troubles shouldn’t surprise us.

12 Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; 13 but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.
1 Peter 4:12-13 NKJV

It’s more than a cliche. Someday it will indeed have been worth it!

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 NKJV

In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.

13 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
1 Peter 1:6-9, 13 NKJV

You will show me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Psalm 16:11 NKJV

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
Forever.
Psalm 23:6 NKJV

Jesus is coming soon.

The Way Is Not Easy

Jesus said to strive to enter His kingdom.

23 Then one said to Him, “Lord, are there few who are saved?”
And He said to them, 24 Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able.”
Luke 13:23-24 NKJV

The way isn’t easy.

13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.
Matthew 7:13-14 NKJV

21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch, 22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying,We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God.
Acts 14:21-22 NKJV

Paul suffered a great deal.

2 Corinthians 11:24-28 NKJV

But we can overcome!

Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
1 John 5:1-5 NKJV

These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.
John 16:33 NKJV

Let us keep our eyes on Jesus!

For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.
Hebrews 12:1-3 NKJV

Jesus is coming soon. Be ready!

The Affliction of Work

No, I don’t mean the feelings of a lazy person who wishes he had been born rich and didn’t have to work. I’m talking about the affliction of trading the only truly non-replaceable part of your life – your time – for activities you would not do unless you were paid. I’m talking about the affliction of when these promises of God aren’t true.

and also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor—it is the gift of God.
Ecclesiastes 3:13 NKJV

As for every man to whom God has given riches and wealth, and given him power to eat of it, to receive his heritage and rejoice in his labor—this is the gift of God.
Ecclesiastes 5:19 NKJV

See, work was part of God’s original plan. Before Adam and Eve sinned they had stuff to do.

Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.
Genesis 2:15 NKJV

Work is a part of the new heavens and the new earth too.

And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him.
Revelation 22:3 NKJV

While we are on this earth, God’s gift is that our work is meaningful and enjoyable.

As for every man to whom God has given riches and wealth, and given him power to eat of it, to receive his heritage and rejoice in his labor—this is the gift of God.
Ecclesiastes 5:19 NKJV

I have had jobs where my feelings were, “Thank God it’s Monday!” The work was meaningful, and I felt like I was really giving my all. It was a joy to go to work.

23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.
Colossians 3:23-24 NKJV

I have also had jobs where I felt the the policies and procedures prevented me from giving my all and doing my best. I admit I probably still have some growing to do to fully act as Jesus would have me do in these sort of jobs. I easily get discouraged and become a clock-watcher.

Jesus is coming soon. Be ready to meet Him!
