  • Dead three days, in the grave and hell. For them.
  • He rose from the grave – for them.
  • He ascended into heaven – for them.
  • He offers eternal life, freely – for them.
  • He did everything he could do — for them!

And most just blow him off. They decide they’re ok. They decide they don’t need a savior.

Bible Reading & Bible Study

When I first thought about this post I thought it would be about the superiority of Bible study over mere Bible reading. I’m not so sure anymore. For me, Bible study is Bible reading with a large notebook open, and pen handy to write notes, verses, related verses, categories, items for prayer, and so on. When a thought strikes, I may spend a lot of time searching and studying related passages for additional understanding. It is a very valuable process. I learn a lot. But I don’t necessarily cover very much of the Bible in a given amount of time. I’m starting to think I need to spend more time just reading the Bible, to simply read lots of its words. The only notebook I should allow myself to have open is my pocket notebook, to capture only the most important thoughts.

Which brings me to The One Year Bible. For each of the 365 days of the year, it has slices of the Old Testament, Psalms, Proverbs, and the New Testament. After a year, you will have read the entire Bible. It only needs one bookmark to read the whole Bible in a year. If you miss a day, week, or month (been there) just go to today’s reading. Forgive yourself, forget the past and press on to the future. As someone (*) has said, “If you miss a goal, cut it in half and start over.” If you don’t have a regular Bible reading system, I suggest you get a copy of The One Year Bible (OYB) and use it. I’m on my 3rd copy. (I’m just a satisfied customer. I’m not getting paid to write this.) First I used a King James OYB for over a year. I can see now that it was “training wheels” for regular Bible study. When I was a young Christian I was lazy. It seemed that moving 4 place marks would be too difficult. The OYB worked nicely. Eventually I got tired of not being able to easily find passages I had read recently, and I moved to a “real” Bible. I found that moving 4 place mark ribbons wasn’t that difficult at all. 🙂

Then there was a dark time in my life, and I fell out of daily Bible reading and study. When I knew I needed to get going again, I bought a NIV OYB. I used it to get going again. I recently bought another NIV OYB to get going again, to come out of my recent time in the desert. (My previous NIV OYB was left behind somewhere in my many post-separation address changes.)

Do I need to use the phrase, “get going again,” again? Remember, what is not doing something you know you should do called? That’s right. Sin.

If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.

Make straight paths for your feet,” the Bible says. That is, make it easy for you to do what you need to do. The OYB is an excellent tool for reading the Bible in a year.


I left this post in draft a couple days, to see how I would end it. I am now using the OYB for daily reading, only allowing myself to use my pocket notebook to record the most important of notes and thoughts. I feel I am to continue to use the OYB to just simply read the Bible in a year, and use my “real” Bible and notebook for the in-depth study I so enjoy. Yet another time a post has turned out quite differently from how I imagined it. Writing is a cool way to meditate.

How I Got Saved!

I have written parts of my salvation story in other posts.

This is the rest of the story. I grew up being taken to church. I knew all the right things, but I didn’t let them influence my life much, my first try at college. Think of any typical suboptimal college behavior and yeah, I probably did it. I was becoming increasingly disillusioned with life, the universe, and everything, but didn’t do anything to change it. I do recall one classmate who came up to me and said not much more than he’d become a Christian, he liked it, and he recommended that I give it a go. I thanked him for his input and continued my pagan lifestyle. Eventually the State of South Carolina sent me a letter, wishing me the best of success in my future academic pursuits, provided my plans did not include the higher educational institutions of the State of South Carolina. I had totally blown up a 4-year Navy ROTC scholarship!

I then worked a while for Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota. I am one of the relatively few people who has been below sea level in South Dakota. Lead is about a mile high. I’ve been well more than a mile deep in the mine. (Interesting to work in a place where, if you died on the job, they would have to bring you up to bury you.) My friends of choice had morals like mine — variable according to the situation. I was making good money, but I wasn’t happy.

Then the two events mentioned at the beginning of this post happened. The story of my salvation is not, “I realized I needed a savior so I called on Jesus.” My story is basically, “I chose to believe, and somewhat to my surprise, it has worked exceedingly well!” I knew about Jesus and salvation from my church upbringing. People had come up to me and said that they liked being Christians, that it worked for them. I had witnessed the drowning death of a high school alumnus, and was well aware of life’s fragility. These were all that were running through my mind as I knelt with the pastor after church and prayed the sinner’s prayer. They were enough. When I arose to my feet I knew I had been changed! I knew I was different!

I tell you, I like being a Christian. It works for me! After more than 38 years, I like being a Christian! It works for me!

A few weeks after praying the sinner’s prayer I read this passage for the first time as someone right with God. My salvation story is scripturally valid. Believing that the works are true is one way to come to know God.

“But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.”
John 10:38 NIV

I believed that other people were telling the truth when they said Christianity worked for them. It worked. I got Saved! I like being a Christian! It works for me!

Pray this sinner’s prayer if you’re not right with God. Get your eternity squared away!

“Father, I know that I have broken your laws and my sins have separated me from you. I am truly sorry, and now I want to turn away from my past sinful life toward you. Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again. I believe that your son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Please send your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your will for the rest of my life. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

God’s Refrigerator 

(The story that goes with the picture is worth reading.)

God’s refrigerator has to be huge, to have all our photos and papers on it. On earth, the photos and stick-men artwork displayed on refrigerators and bulletin boards around the house serve two main purposes. For the parents, in quiet, reflective moments, these mementos launch us into thoughts about the very unique person or persons it is our privilege to get to know, somewhat, as they learn and grow. For me, some of the biggest inward smiles came after the storm had calmed of behavior that left no doubt in my mind of why it is said that some species eat their young. My children were determined to be themselves. They are, and that’s the way it should be. The pictures and art around the house helped me treasure and cultivate their uniqueness. I have moved many times in recent years. Boxes, bookcases and furniture seem much heavier than they did a few years ago. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I cannot start fires with my mind, as I know I stared in anger at stacks of crap — that would not load themselves in the U-Haul — hard enough to have vaporized them if I were able. I have gotten rid of a lot of stuff moving. Cornered into, “Simplify, simplify!”, I find less and less essential to a happy life.

Yet there is a box of long-ago “refrigerator art” I have dutifully carried from temporary abode to temporary abode. I have often opened the box, resolved to reduce or eliminate its contents. My children have said they don’t want any of it, and I don’t blame them. Yet each time I’ve opened that box, I just smile and close it again, and move it to the stack of stuff for the U-Haul. Apparently I have pleasure in having reminders of my children chasing butterflies and getting muddy. Perhaps “Why on earth did mom and dad keep this?” isn’t such a mystery after all.

For children, the knowledge that there is a place that their photos and accomplishments are appreciated and treasured gives them a sense of belonging, of being important. They know they are worthy and special. Both they and their works matter to someone. They know they are not some cosmic accident, temporarily adrift in eternity. “Yeah, well my dad …” and “My mom says …” are spoken with real authority on recess playgrounds.

I think “refrigerator art” is one of the gifts that came down from heaven, so it must be up there too.

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

The One Problem In The World

When I came to believe I was accountable to God, on the Sunday after Memorial Day 1979, I changed! Before, I did pretty much whatever I thought I could get away with. After? I started acting like I would have to give an account of my life to God, and I wanted that experience to be as pleasant as possible. If more people believed this, we would all treat each other better.

We will all give an account of our lives to God.

On Trump’s Tweets

In the 1980’s I was an Army Lieutenant stationed at Ft. Bliss, Texas. One night I was lying awake in bed, far after the time I should have fallen asleep. I was fretting about a situation on base I thought the commanding general should handle differently. The Lord had me get up and read my Bible. He spanked me with this passage.

My heart is not proud, LORD,
my eyes are not haughty;
I do not concern myself with great matters
or things too wonderful for me.
But I have calmed and quieted myself,
I am like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child I am content.

I read it, repented, went to bed, and quickly fell asleep.

I have since learned to treasure being disciplined like this from the Word. It means I am a son of God. It means I am indeed one of the sheep of his pasture, able to hear His voice. I am on the narrow path that leads to eternal life!

The battle for the city of Jericho. Who did God talk to about how to conquer the city? Was it the foot soldiers or the captains? Was it the priests? Nope. God only gave the plan to the head dude, Joshua.

Now the gates of Jericho were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in. Then the LORD said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. I have to assume God is communicating His plans to the President, and God ain’t gonna tell me squat. It’s simply none of my business. Abortion’s Tough Mental Nut

I have no doubt that human beings who die between conception and birth go straight to heaven. Part of this belief comes from what I’ve heard from the pulpit, and read in books and on web sites. Part of the belief comes from my before-and-after feelings from having been the father of a miscarriage. “How many children do you have?” I say, “Two.” I think, “Three.” Recalling the indiscretions of my immoral BC days, I think, “And who knows how many others?” But the most important reason that I believe aborted babies go straight to heaven is I think the Bible teaches it.

Sin happens when we act on a decision to not obey God. Eve was deceived into sinning; Adam was not. With malice of forethought, Adam chose to sin.

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ” “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

Sin is choosing wrong over right. It is also choosing not to do right.

The Bible says there is a time children are too young to know right from wrong.

So if a human dies before he or she knows right from wrong, he or she cannot have committed any sin. The person enters heaven immediately upon death.

We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.

Abortions populate heaven exclusively. Halted abortions, where the child grows into a adult, will send the majority to hell. That’s the tough nut for me. From one limited perspective, abortion is good.

When I was a young Christian, abortion was not a big deal to me. The dead babies went straight to heaven, right? But I changed as I grew in knowledge and understanding. I am now 100% pro-life!

But the gerbils still run on their wheels in my mind on the larger question of eternal life and eternal death. I do not yet have understanding on why God chose to allow evil, to allow individuals to choose to spend eternity in torment. I am seeking the answer, so I know I will eventually understand. Maybe not in this age, though.

Rebellion, Witchcraft, & Idolatry

What a trifecta! Plus ‘stubbornness = iniquity’!

For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
1 Samuel 15:23 KJV

Rebellion, witchcraft, stubbornness, iniquity, idolatry. Wow!

I know of no other verse in the Bible that states so clearly what what God considers bad leadership. Stubbornly ignoring God’s plans for office is the surest way to turn up the torment eternally. Per the law of sowing and reaping, the seed of unnecessary suffering caused people under a bad leader is later reaped by the bad leader, should he of she choose not to repent. The reaping might be 30, 60 or 100 fold the bad seed sown!

God wants all bad leaders to repent while they’re still breathing.

“Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign LORD. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?”
Ezekiel 18:23 NIV

If they choose eternal destruction, I think it might be funny.

On ‘Snowflakes’

We older Americans decided we wanted the “Snowflake Generation.”

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Proverbs 22:6 KJV

Either on purpose, or by standing by and doing nothing, we chose to have the reality-impaired “Snowflake Generation.”

Snowflakes’ behavior is largely what they were taught. Shame on us older Americans, who allowed the public education system to rot into teaching lies and fantasy. IMO the only real difference between the “Greatest Generation” that fought WWII and the “Snowflake Generation” that seems bound and determined to destroy the Republic, is what they were taught. Shame on us! God is not mocked. We are reaping exactly what we sowed.

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

What can we do about it now?

If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?

We can repent.

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

When Did Jesus Say To Weep?

These are some of the last words Jesus said before he was crucified.

As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. Jesus turned and said to them,“Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’”

“Don’t cry about me,” Jesus was saying. “Cry because someday mankind will be so clueless about why I created them that they won’t understand children and families!”

This is part of why God created mankind, and it’s found in the first chapter of The Book!

God blessed them (mankind) and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

God considers children to be a blessing from Him.

Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court.
Psalm 127:3-5 NIV

God blessed the midwives who disobeyed the king of Egypt with families of their own.

The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and Puah, “When you are helping the Hebrew women during childbirth on the delivery stool, if you see that the baby is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live.” The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live. Then the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this? The Number of Abortions – Abortion Counters web site posts the horrible numbers. As of this morning there have been 59,582,785 abortions in America since Roe v Wade, and 1,460,159,311 abortions worldwide since 1980. The entire world is proclaiming,
